Paracast Server Hit By Brute Force Attack...

Early this morning, our server was hit by a brute force Internet attack from an IP address that we've traced to Beijing, specifically "China Unicom Beijing province network, China Unicom."

So the Chinese not only prevent their citizens from accessing most of our sites, they don't want others to either.

I've alerted the 1and1 Internet folks to see if they can help us continue to block these attacks, but if you see our sites slowing or temporarily offline, be aware that we've been noticed, I suppose.

Fascinating. The Chinese technocrats don't like Fortean subjects and the study thereof?

Pure scientific empiricists? Nah.

Probably more a control issue than anything.

Apparently (according to Tweetdeck) Twitter may have been blocked, but not the API, so at the mo, apps such as TweetDeck are working in China

So people really think the reason for this was the same reason China dont like their citizens viewing stuff like this online? You really think they would try to completely bring the site down?

The IP came from China. It could have been spoofed. It could be the NSA. Who knows? :D

I'm reminded of what Gary McKinnon, the NASA "hacker" had to say about what he saw while sneaking around their network. He claimed to have spotted a few Chinese IP's, which wouldn't be at all surprising if true. I was wondering what happened this morning when the forums ceased functioning. Thanks for letting us know Gene. Looks like we have some fans in China.

I figured that there was some sort of a DoS attack this morning, as I normally log in before work to check the forum. All other sites were up and working.

Nice to see that the Paracast has international fans....

I agree with you Xylo,

It's good to know the show is being picked up over there, but as far as the spineless f...tard's attempts to spoil things for everyone else.
Then may the dung of a thousand pandas forever infect their mouths.

Angry Mark  Grrrr.

Wow, first porn, then economic and political liberty, now the paracast. No wonder the Chinese are so angry.

...meh..... probably just some 14 year old in Iowa with his own bot net, although the Chinese do hack constantly at servers all over the world, and most often it's simply for the thrill of it, the targets are random most of the time, put any server online and watch the logs, you'll see random Chinese IP's hitting it all the time, nothing new really, after all, you have to have something to do while you're sitting there all day farming for WoW gold
