The gist of it is that researchers in Japan have theorised that they think they can bend light in such a way as to create an illusion of something in place of an object.
This may shed some light on some experiences people have. David, you mentioned that with your cigar sighting that when it disappeared, you thought it was still there.
Jeff Ritzmann mentioned a sighting someone conveyed of a flying semi-trailer and a starship enterprise.
