Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull- Spoiler Alert

Paranormal Novice
First let me say...save your money for video because this film was crap. That being said, Spielberg went into the paranormal big time. However the crystal skulls were not formed like real skulls, they were elongated large skulls. He did reference that there were 13 crystal skulls and of all things mentioned that the aliens in the film(sorry spoiler alert) were inter-dimensional and not extraterrestrial...I think he has been listening to the Paracast.

Anyone else see this crap fest of a movie and what did you think?

I never regarded Indiana Jones movies as more than popcorn thrillers. If you suspend your disbelief and sit back and enjoy, it will probably be lots of fun. In fact, the wife and I are watching a DVD of the previous entrant in the series this afternoon, made 19 years ago, and it's still fun.

So we do look forward to seeing the new one.

But you can't take this stuff seriously. This isn't Oscar-caliber moviemaking. It's a glorified B-movie.

Exactly. Often there is a letdown when you see a film like this as an adult but it has always been my impression that a movie like this is really designed primarily to excite and fire the imagination of 9-11 year old kids. The problem is often with the expectations more than the film itself. As an adult I can find myself wishing to be excited by a film in the same way I was by say, Star Wars when I was young but it just isn't going to happen.

While I can appreciate Spielberg's craftsmanship and that he is making a film he would want to see if he was 9 years old I do sometimes wish they could resist the temptation to milk a franchise and work more on creating completely new adventures.

One thing I'm sort of curious about is what seems to be an aesthetic choice where everybody in the film is kind of sparkling clean. For the most part everybody has very clean, pressed clothes and shiny faces as compared to something like Saving Private Ryan where he spent some effort making people look appropriately dirty. Even Jones's look is a very clean and controlled kind of fake gritty. There is probably an industry term for this kind of look. I don't know if it is some kind of homage to old serial westerns where the cowboys rode around w/ pressed white sequined shirts or what but I find it distracting. I would think you could make a better picture, even if your market was young kids, by making those kind of environmental details closer to reality. Then again, I'm not Spielberg.

I have not seen the movie but this DVD set looks like it might be better. Has anyone seen this series? I found out about this DVD series on the John E Mack Institute site.

Gene,

Do not get me wrong, I am a fan of popcorn movies and love lots of action(John Woo films for example) plus I really love the Jones series, even the show. I am also a film student and have a variety of taste in movies. But this was bad even for popcorn film! Out of the four films this was by far the worst, I am just trying to save some people the time and let them know to wait for the DVD.

When you do see it I would love to hear what you think.

BTW big fan of the show and you guys help me get through my day listening to your older shows!

I don't know if we'll go or wait for the DVD, but I'll definitely see it.

Bingo. I remember reading a review of The Fifth Element where the reviewer complained about parts of it not being believable and thinking, it's a flippin' sci-fi fantasy...is that really a problem? Just get some yummy snacks, allow yourself to relax and enjoy the movie.

Ditto.

My sister told me I'd enjoy it because it was more fantasy like that the other Jones movies.

Huh? Did she take the others seriously? Still scratching my head over that one.

I'm going to see it for the sheer fun which is all was intended in the first place.

Hmm, talk about your gradual disclosure!
Has a certain Mr Lucas been tuning in to the Paracast, I wonder?

I saw the movie yesterday and enjoyed it for what it was: a wild and silly romp. (Lead lined fridge get-out-of-jail-card, indeed!)

But then we got to Roswell, interdimensional alien grays, hive minds, a oneness, a giant flippin' saucer ?! Was Vaeni on screenplay?

LOVED it. I thought it was specfriggintacular and WELL worth seeing on the bigscreen... if anyone waits till DVD you'll run a serious risk of wishing you hadn't.

I've noticed that over the last several years it's become rather hip to put down movies in this way, as if it would make one less cool, superior and intelligent to simply love the shit out of a good ol adventure movie or something, but I, my wife, my son and his friend LOVED this movie and I think that anyone who doesn't enjoy it has probably suffered a serious loss of childhood wonder and magic.

Dude it sucked...I loved the series always have-but this sucked. I went with 10 friends and a full theater- all 10 thumbs down and a lot of boos at the end.

Now for Iron Man,it was freaking awesome. Well worth seeing.

And no I have not lost anything but my hair...

Saw a trailer for a new Hulk movie. I was surprised to see Ed Norten starring in it. I didn't care for the other Hulk movie. Nolte was only thing good in it. Jennifer Connelly needed less clothes.

I'll check out Iron Man, and I really want to see Tropic Thunder. Ben Stiller movie with Downey Jr. in it. I believe he is playing Iron Man as well.

I liked this movie. It was exactly what I expected, Indiana Jones but older. I was elated with the Roswell stuff and the interdimensional beings stuff. I'm not at all sure this is part of leading up to disclosure but it would be cool.

1 -- The press start taking sightings like Stephenville more seriously
2 -- Movies and TV start exploring the topic
3 -- Mars lander finds microbes
4 -- Future mission finds artifact on the moon or on Mars
5 -- Disclosure event

At least its fun to think about.

Downey Jr. is in Iron Man, and it's the best superhero movie in years. I'll let it speak for itself.

I've decided to wait for DVD of the new Indiana Jones.

Do not let people calling this movie 'crap' disuade you from seeing it, and seeing it on the big screen. Some people will never be satisfied and will always be critics. Frankly, this gets old. Get over yourself and enjoy it for a change.

Not only was it a good movie, completely in character, it was a good synthesis and re-cap of the previous films. In other words, it made fun of itself. It made fun of Ford's age. It made fun of the previous movies. It made fun of the relationships between characters. It's a whole lot better to see this movie if you are up to speed on the previous ones, otherwise you are going to miss some of the jokes, some of which are half a second long. And Marion Ravenwood is still hot. It was great to have this movie tie the loose ends together. It is well worthwhile and highly recommended. If you don't enjoy this movie, I would submit something's wrong with you. Lighten up! First thing I did when I came home is watch the first movie all over again.

Film students in particular are NEVER to be trusted when it comes to reviews... I am a filmmaker... I had to go through a lot of self therapy to get over my film student phase. Filmmaker and Movie Maker magazines, and keeping up with all the movie world happenings are a sure fire way to ruin your ability to enjoy a good movie. Iron Man is ridiculous, as are almost ALL "indies", especially foreign films. Once one gets into foreign films one can safely say that one has succumbed to "the virus". May The Force be with you in defeating it... you'll need it... your foe is more formidable than the Borg.
