The history of hoopsnakes is longstanding in American folklore. I've been trying to get my imagination to come up with some kind of strange rationale for how this could have come about. Why would anyone imagine they were being chased by such an anomaly. Maybe it was code for "I got drunk out at Frank's still up in the mountains" and the reason why I'm late getting home is because a hoop snake chased me all over the place.
