Are we really free?

Then again, perhaps the founding fathers figured it would come to this. The pursuit of happiness isn't a Happiness. The powers that be today see it more as the Pursuit of the Illusion of Happiness through Consumption.

For that we shall increase your chocolate ration from 5 bars per week to 4 bars per week!

Freedom is slavery!
War is Peace!
Ignorance is Strength!

Sorry, I had an Orwellian flashback.

By any definition the short answer is still NO, we are not free. Not in this country, not in any country. Everything else is semantics.

wow... It's nice to know I'm not the only one who sees things this way.

I work 60 to 80 hours a week... I'd kill for a good paying job that was only 40 hours...

Same here. 50hrs/week minimum + saturdays. And then there's my second job on sundays...

That video touched on a major problem, the dumbing down of America. Here's a recent example; Monday mornings my depot has a meeting and has to watch a video from Corporate. This week before the video we were introduced to Corporates brilliant new plan to milk an extra 15 hours each week out of us in order to increase sales. As we all reeled from this moronic assault on us, we started the video.

"This week I'd like to walk you through the new website for our employee awards program. The first thing you'll notice when you get to the site is that it has a different url than the old site. That url is 'http://www.blah blah blah...."

I shit you not. This bonehead who gets paid a substantial amount more than me to work less than half as many hours actually said that. And yes, he actually spelled out the 'http://www.', suggesting that not only is he so stupid that he doesn't know you can't get to the new site without that url, but apparently he actually types that every time he goes to a site.

It's no wonder the world is falling apart. I live in Missouri, a moronically conservative state. All day long I listen to lower-middle-class people complain about how hard they work just so their tax dollars can be used to support the lazy people on welfare. I bite my tongue, all the while wanting to rail on and on about how I work 80+ hours a week listening to their moronic complaints just so some dumbass with a college degree can pay his wasted college tuition with the money I've earned and will never see.

just my thoughts - yes we are free - we can decide to go along or not - to work or not - to obey or not - but you just have to be willing to pay the consequences - Are some tribes free? - yes, in their way - they eat when they're hungry. sleep when they're tired, etc

Life is pay some now or pay more later. Pay to send a kid to school now, or pay more to keep him in prison later. Pay so a person can go to the doctor now, or pay more when he goes to the ER later. You don't escape paying by not paying now ("lower taxes"). You just pay more later.

We are mostly free in this country in terms of political and civil liberties, compared to say places like China or North Korea. I don't know how to define "freedom." I was looking for people's thoughts on here. Conspiracy believers would not believe we are, right?
