District 9

Free episodes:

Don't know if it will be crap Cotton. Peter Jackson did a pretty stellar job on the Rings Trilogy. Both my wife and I are looking forward to seeing this. Proof will be in the viewing......

When I say crap I am speaking about how it represents validity to the topic that we are all here for in large rather then the quality of the cinema.

Well Cottonzway allow me to impart a bit of wisdom that an actor friend of mine gave me years ago. When it comes to this topic (UFOs) or any other, Hollywood doesn't give a whit about the subject. It is whatever sells in the public marketplace. If suddenly small brown bags filled with dog manure suddenly became the "in thing" to have, Hollywood would be on the frontlines pushing it....... That my friend, is Hollywood. Just take it for what it is ... a new movie about a subject we all find fascinating.

I'd say crap in regards to validity of the topic. Think of it, to be completely accurate as possible to the topic would make for some pretty dull entertainment.

Most reliable sightings do not have that "flash, bang" effect that Hollywood is looking to fill seats with.

In fact some of the best evidence or something that could coined "validity" is quite subtle. Ted Phillips and his trace evidence for example.

Same holds true with the paranormal (ghosts) side of things. Some of the best evidence is quite subtle. And most of todays audience is unable to understand it anyway.

From what little I've seen so far, this reminds me of an Old Fox television movie and TV series, Alien Nation. I hope it's not just a CG tarted up ripoff.

I saw Alien Nation the movie in a run down cinema in a small country town when I was a kid. The movie was so bad. The series didn't do much better.

Does anyone remember V? I loved that show. It got pretty dodgy with the TV series.

I remember V, it started as a miniseries didn't it? I think it came on around my bed time and so I missed it.

I am eagerly awaiting this movie District 9. I know it could really go either way, but the premise is interesting and the fact that Peter Jackson is involved gives me some hope. But having said that, was King Kong any good or did it just look good on screen?

Okay, here is the "blurb" about this new flick.

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them.

Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare -- they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA.

The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe, contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable -- he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

Ridiculous plot. Looks like a heavy handed political statement disguised as a science fiction movie. The most coveted and history changing event in human history and they are relegated to SLUMS.. in South Africa of all places... lol. dumbest thing I've ever heard.

You telling me that the US or Soviet Union or the UN would not have given the aliens safe harbor in a remote area or research center? The Et's "arrived" right during the middle of the cold war.. no way in hell the superpowers would allow aliens and alien technology (with the potential to dominate the world) to just waste away in a slum.. Something like that would be way to much of national security risk to allow the "other side" to get ahold of.

oohhh the evil racist humans and their evil Blackwater companies water boarding the poor Muslims.. err I mean terrorists.. er I mean aliens. See how bad we are - we are all racist against the poor Aliens and want to let them rot.. See how I'm cleverly weaving current political threads into my story? See how I'm making a deep metaphor about human racism by using ALIENS instead of black people.. and get this.. the black people are even racist against the aliens!! Blew your mind didn't I? Woaa...mind fuck... I swear I didn't lift this idea from an early episode of Star Trek the Next Generation.. the one where Wesley Crusher learns a lesson about what it means to be grow up and be enlightened person. Oh wait.. that was every episode he was in.. never mind.

Will not be seeing this.

Okay, and on other films with an "alien" concept ... here is another frightening entry into the "Summer Sweeps."

Aliens In The Attic

Can you feel the tension?

Good Lord. Shoot me now.

On second thought, I might actually go see that if....someone put me in a straight jacket, cut my eyelids off, paralyzed my eyes and neck muscles and pointed my head at the screen.

That's entertainment! "District 9" is based on a short., "Alive in Joburg"., which was a documentary style film dealing with issues of apartheid.
Besides., I don't think it is possible to do a film that encompasses the subject matter., without coming off like an extended episode of "In Search Of". I have been pleasantly surprised a number of times by films that exhibited bits and pieces of a given paradigm. It is speculative fiction AKA science fiction.

Saw it and personally I thought it was really good. There hasn't been much in the Science Fiction scene of late and this definitely was worth watching. It's a great example of film maker's being in control of a project rather than have the distributor or large film company dictating what it screen worthy. The budget, style and FX are also an eye opener. Sinking so much money into Hollywood flopbusters is being put to shame thanks to productions like this.

This is the best "alien" movie ever.

The Alien Factor (1978)

None other has ever captured the "stoopid" quality of this reality with so much crispness.

Drat it! I've been on vacation and didn't have a chance to see the video before it was pulled. I liked the original show and look forward to the new version.
