Nick Pope on The Paracast

Although that said, who else would have been allowed an Op Ed piece in the Times? - so he does add an air of legitimacy to this, right? Is that his role?

For my money that's it. Here's a guy who worked for the government filing UFO reports. Not a guy who claims to have maybe seen something once on an army base, not someone who used to work for NASA and might have heard something from a photo analyst, not a person who in his duties as a engineer came across some files that may have represented back-engineered technology, no. This was his JOB. Day in, day out, UFOs for breakfast, lunch and dinner (or if you like, supper).

Now is that exciting? Fuck no! He's a goddamn file clerk for chrissakes! What it is is legitmate, something horrifically lacking in the UFO field. If you're looking for flash, bang, whiz, there's more than enough to go around but don't expect it to make a dent in the reality bubble surrounding most people. Nick is a pin that can poke holes in that bubble. Dull, tiny, legitimate holes.

Well, the man is certainly well-spoken. He spent THREE years in 'UFO tabulating' (not 21 and not 100% full-time.) He went in neutral and came out interested, but he doesn't know much--from his own admission. He's written a couple of books and a couple of fiction books as well, the latter two of which went through a security review and passed. Any time you get to something the least bit interesting he says he can't talk about it (OK: Fair Enough.) So the bottom line is he spoke for two hours about almost nothing. I now see where the 18.5 minutes came from. He's kind of like Seinfeld: It's a show about nothing.

This is the real issue for me. I appreciate Pope's work and Jesse Marcel, Jr.--people like that who have a story, they tell it, they get off the stage. That's honest. However, when they keep going on the stage telling the same story, that's not only boring, it's useless. They should add their testimony and then walk away.

As far as Roswell goes he might be the only thing keeping that story afloat, considering all the nonsense and infighting thats come out of there lately (Day After Roswell / Witness to Roswell).

Any chance of getting him on the show? I know you had him on the show two years ago, but that was before his latest book, The Roswell Legacy, which came out on 2007 and is just about to come out in paperback.

I mean people have been squeezing the life out of that story for years, how many Roswell books are out there?

I get the sense he's forever walking the very thin line between what he can and cannot say, due to his former employment.

Interesting comment. He vaguely implied some of that in the recent interview on Radio Kerrang when host pressed him a little bit. He was on that show after the Edgar Mitchell interview. The host was asking Pope for his views on Mitchell comments and after that the interview transfered to wider subjects.

Gee, thanks! BTW, there are a multitude of different accents in the UK. I'm from Wales, and sound nothing like Nick Pope, who is English. We've also got various Scottish accents, Northern Irish accents, a huge variation between north and south Wales, the accents of cities like Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle, the Cockney accent, Yorkshire, Lancashire and West Country accents, to name but a tiny few. There! Just thought you should know .

The amount of accents in just England alone is crazy. I live in Australia but was born in Ascot and we were in the UK recently for a holiday. Trying to keep track of what accent is which area is impossible!

For whats Its worth I enjoyed this Pod cast. It kept me interested for the whole duration.

I notice that after every pod cast theres always people who make Whinging posts about why they didn't like It.

A few weeks ago they had the Alien Interview guest who was lame boy did people get upset then this week they had Nick Pope who answered his question Intelligently and showed that he knew people in the field and shared his opinions and yet people still whine ...!

Its like Gene and Dave cant do right for doing wrong.

If you listened to the Para cast and two little green men jumped out of your Ipod and started doing a Viennese Waltz on it you would still get people whinging about it.

No one is complaining that Dave and Gene are doing a bad job. Theyre doing a great job and getting super guests like Nick Pope and Bud Hoskins. However if a guest turns out not to meet expectations then whats wrong with talking about that?

I was at a conference on telecommunications in Stockholm, Sweden, recently. We had people from all over the world. The conference was in English. At the main session there were probably a dozen speakers. Obviously, lots of different types of English accents all at once: Egypt, India, France. The only guy I couldn't undeerstand was the one from Scotland!

Here's a little clue. This thread is in a section called "Talk About the Show." That is where we Talk. About. The. Show. When someone says, "What exactly did Nick Pope actually say?" why do you respond that that is whining? Here's a few definitions of whining:

1. To utter a plaintive, high-pitched, protracted sound, as in pain, fear, supplication, or complaint.
2. To complain or protest in a childish fashion.
3. To produce a sustained noise of relatively high pitch: jet engines whining

I assume you are trying to use definition number two. What is childish about asking what Nick Pope said in two hours? I thought the Paracast was known for at least being somewhat skeptical about the claims of the interviewees.

Now, about criticizing our hosts, I don't see ANY post in this thread that critcizes our hosts (not THIS time). Gene and David both tried to tie Pope down a number of times. That Pope evaded their uestions is not the fault of the hosts. When I say, for example, "I know see where the 18.5 minutes comes from," I see that as SUPPORTING our hosts in agreeing that Pope didn't say much.

So, from my point of view, after every show there is always a group of people who come on the threads WHINING that everyone does not bow down in worship to another spell-binding episode of enlightenment. Supplicating lap dogs salivating over the threads is just as disgusting as nonsensical, ill-founded criticism.
