So Who Were Those People?

Long, long ago I met up with a truly eccentric character who came up with some opinion pieces that helped presage a wider discussion of ancient mysteries.
But when you watch a TV show called “Ancient Aliens,” or a similar reality show suggesting that extraterrestrials visited us in Biblical times, you may not consider some of those who originated the idea. Except for a few people, their work is mostly forgotten.
So beginning in the late 1950s, in Jim Moseley’s Saucer News, there appeared a curious series of somewhat dense articles entitled “Extraterrestrialism as an Historical Doctrine.” The author was identified as “Y.N. ibn Aharon.” He asserted the name was based on his dad’s, but we all knew him as Yonah Fortner.
Yonah’s main claim was that the deity depicted as Jehovah in the Bible was, in fact, a visitor from another planet.
While Yonah’s writings didn’t catch on much, and didn’t deliver many comments when they were published, others were seizing on the possibilities of ET’s presence more than two thousand years ago.
So there was “The Sky People: Ancient Aliens and the Supernatural” from Brinsley Le Poer Trench from 1960. Trench was soon revealed to be a British noble of sorts, William Francis Brinsley Le Poer Trench, 8th Earl of Clancarty.
The book’s promotion summarized the contents, saying it would reveal that:
• Apollo and other Greek goods were actually visitors from outer space
• The Garden of Eden may have been on another planet
• Virgin births can be attributed to extraterrestrial beings
• Visitors from other galaxies and dimensions are working together to save Earth
The last item more or less repeats the constant contactee claim over the decades that ET is here to help us rather than to harm us.
Now before I go on, I’ll just repeat what I’ve said before: If ET, as such experiencers claim, is really here to help the people of Earth, it is sure doing a poor job of it. Our planet is a mess for many reasons, and not just the politics. Regardless of what you believe to be the cause, we have extreme weather that’s wreaking havoc in many locales. War is a constant, suffering is a constant.
If ET really and truly cares, just what are they doing to minimize or eliminate our suffering? Are we forced to endure endless pain in the expectation — so far unrealized — that advanced beings will eventually decide it’s the right time to set things right?
Regardless, the possibility of visitations from advanced beings long ago has a romantic feel to it. While Yonah Fortner and Brinsley Le Poer Trench are barely remembered, certainly the former, a hotel worker from Switzerland, Erich von Däniken, managed to catch a wave with his best selling book from 1968 on the topic, “Chariots of the Gods.”
He since wrote several sequels with more ancient astronaut lore.
We featured him on the February 4, 2018 episode of The Paracast, and we brought on my old friend, David Halperin, a retired religious scholar with a long-time interest in UFOs, to explore the theory.
Over the course of the first half of the show on which he appeared, von Däniken didn’t fare so well discussing his Biblical interpretations, which David was quick to dissect in his calm, gentle, persuasive manner.
Regardless, the theory of ancient astronauts will outlive us all. After all, it’s not as if we can truly know what occurred in those early days and what we regard as primitive civilizations truly experienced. It is not difficult to interpret the Bible and other texts of its time in modern terms to suggest the presence of flying saucers in the descriptions of such flying craft as fiery chariots or vimanas. To the people of that age, they may indeed have been interpreted as contraptions of the Gods or visitors from the heavens.
It doesn’t mean that’s the case, but lacking a time machine or some other way to venture into the past, we may never know for sure.
Regardless, I enjoy how such concepts have been depicted over the years in fiction.
One of the most popular sci-fi TV shows — based on a 1994 movie from Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin (who also produced “Independence Day”) — is “Stargate.” The film depicts the discovery by archaeologists of a giant circular device known by the title of the movie. When activated, it can be used to open a wormhole to a planet orbiting a distant star system, to which you can travel in just seconds.
Indeed, when you consider the shortcomings of our primitive rocket ships, the idea of near-instantaneous scheme to travel across space is truly fascinating. But the stargate is a transceiver, meaning you have to have one at both locations for the system to work.
The movie’s success spawned a series of sci-fi TV shows from different producers — don’t get me started on the vagaries of Hollywood, movie studios and production companies — beginning with “Stargate SG-1,” which debuted in 1997. With a different cast, the show lasted 10 years, a long time in TV land, and spawned two spin-offs, “Stargate Atlantis” and “Stargate Universe.”
Since the studio responsible, MGM, was bought by Amazon, there are reports that a new Stargate show is, in some form, in the works, perhaps with some of its original stars.
Now to be blunt, I thought the show to be both entertaining and a little schlocky. But I’ve also seen each episode at least twice.
In any case, it’s a sure thing that ancient astronauts are destined to remain embedded in our pop culture. The concept is also destined to remain elusive, because, as I wrote earlier, it’s not as if you can prove the presence of extraterrestrials on Earth more than two thousand years ago.
Well, unless ET lands and chooses to clue is on on what they were doing here so long ago, whether they chose to hang around and watch over us, or just returned to check our progress. Or maybe a different race of beings is among us now.
Then again, the time machine concept is not unknown in the UFO field. One theory has it that humans from our own future have perfected the means of traveling back in time. So it’s quite possible that some of those humans were, themselves, mistaken for Gods in those ancient times.
Of course, none of this meant to dispute the belief in a supreme being that created the universe and remains a presence in the lives of many of us. You could thus regard ET as creations of God as well.
