This Week's Episode: Gene and special guest cohost Tim Swartz welcome a return visit from UFO/Fortean investigator Stan Gordon. During this segment, Stan will bring us up to date on the huge number of paranormal encounters he's investigated in Pennsylvania through the years, including some amazing reports that he received just days before this interview. He'll include details indicating possible government interest in a Bigfoot case, or was it a visit from the MIB? Stan has been researching UFO sightings, Bigfoot encounters, and other mysterious events since 1959. For many years, he led teams of scientists, engineers, and research specialists to investigate mysterious occurrences. He is the primary investigator of the 1965 UFO crash incident that occurred near Kecksburg, PA that he maintains is still unexplained despite efforts to dismiss it as something conventional.

Blast From the Past: The Publicity Flap!
By Gene Steinberg

During a recent appearance on The Paracast, UFO investigator and statistician Cheryl Costa talked about a book she co-authored, “The UFO Sightings Desk Reference: United States of America 2001 – 2020.”

The book contains data and analysis for 167,632 sighting reports of unidentified flying objects reported by individuals during the first 20 years of the 21st century. On the show, she referred to a 6-8 year cycle involving the appearance of UFOs.

But, as I said during the episode, this is certainly not the first time there have been attempts to find cycles in sightings, either involving time or location, or some combination of the two. A big deal is made when so-called sighting surges, or flaps, occur and whether they provide some clues as to what’s going on.

Well, the other day, I was organizing some of my old emails, and came across an issue of this newsletter from April 3, 2010. Unfortunately the text of my commentary is not posted on our forums, and it’s rather difficult to find in our online repository of older issues because of the limits in the way our newsletter management script is designed.

But I thought it would apply perfectly to continued discussion of this matter, so I present an updated version of it here with some changes to flesh it out a bit:

Those of you who have followed UFO lore through the years realize that there have been many sighting waves in various parts of the world through the years. Some of them have become the stuff of legends, such as 1947, in the wake of Kenneth Arnold’s classic sighting of nine disc-shaped objects cruising in formation while flying in his private airplane over Mount Rainier in Washington State.

Yes, there were loads of sightings before June 24th of that year, and many delivered far more compelling evidence, but Arnold’s sighting got the right publicity at the right time. Arnold described their flight pattern in a way that he never really lived down: “They flew erratic, like a saucer if you skip it across the water.”

Well, the press, ever in search of a great story and a memorable hook, came up with the term “flying saucer,” although the objects were not quite saucer-shaped, and Arnold was actually talking of their motion, not their appearance.

What should have been a serious matter became the butt of jokes. The late Captain Edward J. Ruppelt, while head of the Air Force’s saucer investigative body, Project Bluebook, came up with the term “unidentified flying object” or UFO in order to provide a more scientific environment for the study.

So if it’s a flying saucer, it’s not serious. If it’s a UFO, it is. Or at least you recognize the phenomenon as something you cannot explain. These days, some refer to them as UAPs, particularly the U.S. government, because the UFO label has acquired its own veneer of toxicity.

Now in 1952, UFOs were observed around the world, and when they flew above Washington, D.C. in July of that year, it was just one of many cases that filled the newspapers and broadcasts of the day.

Through the years, you can find other flaps, usually triggered by a single, well-publicized event. At the time, some researchers called them “publicity flaps,” because they didn’t represent an actual major UFO wave so much as a sighting that captured the public’s imagination. Once the dam broke, loads of other people felt comfortable about reporting their own sightings.

Now it’s quite possible that some of those witnesses never saw anything at all, or at least nothing strange, but felt comfortable being a part of the crowd and decided to make up their own sightings. However, additional sightings may also have occurred simply because more people looked to the skies and saw what may have been happening there all along.

Over the years, UFO investigative groups have continued to report the apparent ebb and flow of sightings. Wherever you live, there is probably a wave of sightings in your city or at least somewhere nearby.

The question, of course, is whether the forces behind those UFOs are really increasing surveillance of our world from time to time for reasons only known to themselves, or whether they are always there, but a random sighting all of a sudden makes their presence more evident.

On the other hand, there is also the possibility that these UFO flaps are really just the result of someone or something putting on a show strictly for our benefit. They appear somewhere knowing that the local populace is likely to see them. Or is it all just a staged event meant as a diversion to draw our attention away from the real phenomenon, whatever that might be?

Regardless of the reasoning behind these alleged cycles, it may well be that we are just trying too hard to seek patterns where none exist. And even if UFOs arrive in sequences or at locations due to some sort of fixed pattern, that doesn’t define the cause, beyond possible intelligent control.

It takes us no closer to a solution to the phenomenon, because it doesn’t define the meaning behind what is being measured.

In the early days of the modern UFO era, some felt that our visitors came here from a nearby planet, perhaps Mars. This was long before our own space probes revealed a desolate waste that may, long long ago, have been hospitable to some form of life, but not now.

But even if extraterrestrials have a presence on Mars, and perhaps the Moon, where would a seven-year or six-year or eight-year cycle fit in? That wouldn’t define the travel times between here and there or back again. Or at least the time our proposed trips to Mars would take. So what’s the point?

Again, maybe the phenomenon gets a “kick” out of having us chase circles to find meaningless cycles that, themselves, wouldn’t define intent or any process that would provide any meaningful answers to what’s really going on.

But one thing I do recall from the early days of UFO research. As soon as we tried to hone in on some pattern, it changed. Now that itself might indicate intent, but not the sort of intent we expected.
