Talking to Whom?

One subject we haven’t covered so much on The Paracast is Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP). All right, EVP is also the acronym for Employee Value Proposition, but I don’t need to define that.
In any case, we featured the subject of these possibly disembodied voices on three previous episodes. Two, on October 27, 2010 and November 5, 2016, featured Michael Esposito of the Phantom Airwaves Institution, someone who had explored the the matter for a number of years.
The third, released on December 15, 2013, featured long-time paranormal researcher David M. Rountree, who reportedly used his work in EVP and similar phenomena to “develop a wormhole hypothesis associated with a paranormal event horizon.”
Whatever that is.

Thanks to our cohost, Tim Swartz, we returned to the subject for our September 11, 2022 episode that featured researcher Ron Yakovetti, whose work also includes a related phenomenon in afterlife research known as Instrumental Trans-Communication or ITC.
In his work, Ron has used such devices as the Ovilus, Spirit Box or Ghost Boxes. Such gadgets are designed to electronically retrieve possible evidence of ghost phenomena, supposed attempts by people who have passed on to talk to us.
Now I have to admit that, while I am troubled by such possibilities, especially the logic behind such alleged communications, these researchers aren’t making up stuff. Voices are being received in a variety of situations, and not all have anything to do with a possible haunted house. In some cases, there are back and forth communications with a supposed entity who may or not be someone the percipient knows who is no longer alive.
We’v presented a few of these recordings on The Paracast over the years, and they appear to be a mixed bag. Some include voices that are perfectly clear, while others are surrounded by an audible haze that requires you to listen in to the sound to detect anything that you can understand. In the end, I felt that I might be imagining the presence of voices because that’s what I was looking for.
It sort of reminds me of the alleged Face on Mars, where a giant rock formation appears to be engraved in some fashion with what may be a face. It may also be a case of pareidolia, which involves our ability to try to see shapes from random images. Consider the Rorschach inkblot test as a practical example of how this situation may play out.
In other words, some of you might feel there is a face on the Red Planet, despite the logical questions of why such an apparent highly irregular shape would have been left there by ancient Martians or more recent space visitors.
Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s not genuine. Tens of thousands of years of erosion may have altered a perfectly clear face into something barely recognizable. But that inserts a factor that is not proven, which is that any intelligent beings were ever present there and, if they were, that they were at all interested in constructing such an immense monument.
When it comes to the possible presence of voices from beyond, that theory presupposes that there is an afterlife, and that, if there is, someone who has died has the ability to communicate with living people.
Or why they would choose to do so, particularly with conversations where the speaker is not identified and doesn’t appear to be taking to anyone in particular.
When it comes to a message meant for someone, the possibilities are not limited to a dead relative or friend trying to check in. If genuine, it could represent some outside force deciding to pick on or contact some individual. Maybe it’s a representation of that person’s own consciousness interacting with an outside force.
Maybe this is all just absurd, but possibly no more logical than a message from the afterlife.
It’s not that I disbelieve in the afterlife, and having reached the ripe old age of 77, I suppose I’ll find out for sure soon enough. But that is an Earthly invention of what happens after you die. There is really no way to confirm such a theory, unless we use the scheme described in a scene in the 1986 film, “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.”
Recently resurrected, Mr. Spock is asked by Dr. McCoy to speak about his experiences when he died, as depicted in that scene from “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn.”
Spock responds by saying, to summarize, they lacked a common frame of reference. Dr. McCoy basically asks if that means he’d have to be dead to understand, and Spock says yes.
Sure there are a number of so-called “near death experiences,” where people who were briefly “clinically dead” before being brought back to life, reported unusual events, such as floating above their bodies, or seeing the light to where dead people are destined to go.
But it’s not at all certain anything genuine is happening. It may well be a hallucination generated by the brief period of lifelessness. Of course, there are also the purported resemblances between such phenomena and UFO abductions. But both could be events that are not rooted in our physical reality.
In any case, while I’m interested in possible evidence of voice phenomena, the evidence of recordings doesn’t demonstrate their source. We are immersed in electronic radiation, and perhaps radio waves might be generating such sounds, with something in a locality serving as a radio. Even the devices used to detect such signals may, themselves, be receiving a regular broadcasts from somewhere.
Consider that, shortwave radio, although not in use as much as it was years ago, receives signals from around the world.
Now this doesn’t mean EVP and related research shouldn’t continue. While it’s clearly possible to receive such voices, finding their source may be an exercise in futility. The presence of recordings doesn’t tell us how they were generated. It’s highly doubtful mainstream science would be interested in tracking this down in any meaningful way.
It does indicate, though, that there are loads of strange things happening in our existence that may well be destined to remain strange, and thus unexplained.
