After The Paracast — Available exclusively for Paracast+ subscribers on October 8: UFOs, pop culture, sci-fi and more are discussed by Chris O'Brien and Greg Bishop. The duo talk with Gene and cohost Tim Swartz about the possible influences for UFO beings and other paranormal memes. In talking about a possible "co-creation" cause for such phenomena, possible "placeholder memories" are on the agenda. UFO Sources and Methods
By Gene Steinberg

They are everywhere. If you can believe some of those numbers, people around the world are regularly experiencing UFO abductions. Our alleged visitors are out and about all over the place and few notice.

And if you can believe that 1991 survey from Roper of 5,947 adults, one-in-50 people have been abducted. The survey, by the way, was reportedly funded by Robert Bigelow. Yes, THAT Robert Bigelow!

To be sure, the number is absurd. It would add up to 33 million in the U.S. alone, and abductions occur all over the world. So can you even begin to imagine the outrageous result? Every single day, thousands of spaceships are flying across the planet mostly undetected, and they are busy kidnapping humans.

Now I’d find the survey more believable if it was restricted to people who had UFO encounters. Even then, one-in-50 would seem excessive, but at least it would be more believable, but that’s not saying a lot.

Whatever the number, it’s a sure thing that most experiencers don’t tell anyone what happened. Not family, not friends, nobody.

Even regular — so to speak — UFO sightings aren’t often reported. I recall how the late UFO lecturer, Stanton Friedman, would ask the members of his audiences to raise their hands if they had such an encounter. A small number would respond with a “yay,” but when he asked how many of those people reported them, most of the hands went down.

And that’s just about seeing something strange flying around. If the experience included someone or something taking them aboard an alien craft, it makes perfect sense that it is not happening terribly often.

But some researchers don’t subscribe to my cautions. So Dr. David Jacobs, a long-time and controversial abduction researcher, has estimated abductions in the millions. He claims that ET is here to create a hybrid alien/human race to quietly infiltrate the seats of power and take over.

If that’s true, and I find the idea outlandish, I do wish they’d hurry. Planet Earth is a mess with wars and extreme weather events. If the space people really cared about us, why aren’t they doing something?

No, I don’t subscribe to the concept of a possible prime directive about not interfering with the locals. Simply allowing people to see UFOs in flight is interference of the first order. Even a single sighting, without any contact, may change the life of the witness. It’s hard to imagine a more blatant effort to interfere.

My feeling is that, whatever is responsible for UFO encounters probably doesn’t care one way or the other.

That idea doesn’t account for abductions, however. If ET wants genetic samples, all they need is a few from each race and sex, with perhaps extra samples to account for different heights, hair colors, and so on and so forth.

Millions doesn’t make a lick of sense.

So what is happening to these people? Are they making it all up, going crazy, suffering from sleep paralysis — what? Does it make any sense at all to believe that millions of abductions have occurred?

But there are other possibilities.

One is what author/researcher/podcaster Greg Bishop calls “co-creation,” meaning that we all are somehow responsible for producing paranormal episodes.

What they see is thus very dependent on social and cultural conditioning. So in the middle ages, elves, fairies, leprechauns and other creatures of legend were encountered. Did these beings magically metamorphose or shapeshift into grays, so-called Nordics, reptilians, insectoids and other forms that imply visitors from space?

Or is it possible that the form of the encounter doesn’t represent what’s really happening?

So why would they assume such forms?

In his appearance on this weekend’s episode of our premium bonus podcast, After The Paracast, Bishop talks of “placeholder memories.” That means, when you see something that is beyond your ability to interpret, the mind alters the form into something that is more acceptable or familiar.

That would explain adopting sci-fi images in the 20th and 21st century cultures.

But what about talking or exchanging thoughts with these entities? What about the messages they sometimes convey that humans are too warlike and our destroying the environment? Experiencers are exhorted to spread the word from our Space Brothers about peace and love.

Yet another theory is that these curious and sometimes frightening experiences are actually messages from Mother Earth itself. As we continue to despoil our planet, it is responding in the only way it can. Well, except for extreme weather of course, and maybe that’s a factor.

Of if you consider a co-creation process, maybe mankind is actually generating its own encounters to try to persuade more of us to get our acts together. This, of course, doesn’t preclude the possibility that we are interacting with an unknown external force that makes its presence known through cultural archetypes.

But unless those in power receive these messages and act positively on them, nothing is going to change. Not now, not ever.

Yet another possibility forms the core of the theories about interactions with the multiverse. So our visitors aren’t really from another planet or another place in this dimension; they come from a parallel world. They arrive by slipping in and out of portals that are located in so-called window areas around the world.

So they may not even have to use advanced technology to make the jump. Planetary conditions here and there may interact somehow to create these effects. We just have to locate them, enter them, and accept the consequences.

This doesn’t mean that some UFOs are also visitors from other planets. More and more planets that may have favorable surface conditions are being discovered revolving around nearby star systems. Perhaps some have spawned civilizations that have mastered interstellar travel. Or maybe they have tamed dimensional portals or wormholes to act as sources for quick transfers from one place to another.

Actually, I’d prefer a stargate myself, if it manifests itself similarly to the “Stargate” movie and TV programs. You enter this blue watery mist, and, seconds later, you arrive safely across the galaxy.

That’s the ticket. Except, of course, if there’s a breakdown in the transport system and you’re stuck between these two locations with no way to exit.

In the meantime, after following all of the back and forth through the decades about UFOs, it’s clear to me that we haven’t begun to understand that’s really going on. Maybe we’re not meant to know, that we must continue to explore, but that means that we’ll never have a solution to the UFO mystery.
