2009 has been a perfectly awful year for the UFO field. First legendary author John Keel died, followed a few weeks later by historian RIchard Hall. In both cases, however, these deaths involved elderly men who had been quite ill for several years.

In the case of 34-year-old Mac Tonnies, the news was shocking for many reasons. First and foremost, nobody at such a tender age should confront serious illness let alone death. Second, it seemed that his best years were ahead of him, as his reputation for original thinking had only just begun to spread throughout the field.

The sad details are simple. Mac was found dead in his apartment, having apparently succumbed to natural causes. I do not know his health history, nor whether he had confronted a serious illness or other problems. The means of his departure are far less relevant than what he did while he was here.

Mac first came to my attention in 2006, when documentary producer Paul Kimball, one of his close friends, suggested him as a possible guest on The Paracast. At the time, David and I knew Mac only as the author of a well-received book on Martian mysteries and some science fiction.

The young man we came to know in the ensuing years was brilliant, talented, funny and sweet at the same time. This gentle soul somehow managed to expand our thinking in totally original ways during his few appearances on the show. More recently, he had been writing a book about what he referred to as Â?Cryptoterrestrials,Â? a race of beings that may coexist with mankind and is perhaps responsible for the appearance of UFOs.

Now Mac Tonnies, unlike many people who come to explore the paranormal, was never an ideologue. This theory was merely one of many he explored and considered in an effort to find out what was really going on all around us. One thing is certain, and that is we should not accept the prevailing point of view, such as the possible presence of ET, as gospel, without absolute evidence. There is far more data to discover and investigate before anyone can come to a certain solution about what it all means.

As to that book, well I understand it was in its final editing stage upon MacÂ?s passing. I only hope that his dear friends, perhaps Greg Bishop, Paul Kimball and Nick Redfern, make sure his work finally reaches the wide audience it deserves.

Well it is true that Mac Tonnies has competed his all-too-brief existence in our world, as long as we continue to be inspired by our memories of him and his cutting-edge writings, he will never be forgotten.

Meantime we have called upon some of Mac's closest friends for a special episode of The Paracast. We'll let you know soon when it'll be broadcast.

Peace,
Gene Steinberg
