This Week's Episode: Veteran UFO researcher/author Kevin D. Randle returns to talk with Gene and cohost Tim Swartz about his latest book, "Understanding Roswell," and whether there's anything more to learn about that 1947 incident, the status of the evidence that's come forth through the years, and whether there's anything left to discover. He'll also bring us up to date and the current status of the UFO field. Within the UFO community, Randle is often regarded as one of the preeminent experts on the reported crash of a UFO near Roswell, New Mexico in July 1947. He is a professional best-selling author with over 100 books to his name. He has a Ph.D. in psychology and was in the United States Air Force and the National Guard, where he held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 2009.

After The Paracast — Available exclusively for Paracast+ subscribers on October 23: Kevin D. Randle, the veteran Roswell researcher, returns to talk Gene and cohost Tim Swartz about the new edition of his 1998 book, "Project Moon Dust: Beyond Roswell." Did the Air Force continue a covert investigation of UFOs after shuttering Project Blue Book in 1969? Randle also explains why he does not expect the current Pentagon UAP project to help solve the mystery. There's also an extensive discussion about the problems getting UAP information from the government via Freedom of Information Act requests. Randle is an American military veteran, UFO expert and author. He is widely respected within the UFO community, particularly for his work on events at Roswell in 1947, and has written many books, both fiction and non-fiction, primarily on UFO, science fiction and military themes.

Keepers of Secrets?
By Gene Steinberg

It’s an easy assumption for believers in UFO reality to make. Governments won’t come out and admit we are being visited by extraterrestrials for reasons known to themselves. After all, they must be extraterrestrial. Therefore there is a big-time cover-up of the truth.

Before I get into some of the possibilities, there’s one more thing to consider: It may well be that the governments of Earth have no idea what UFOs are, even if they prefer to call them UAPs. There might be some who believe they are spaceships, but it’s not as if there’s actual physical evidence.

Unless, of course, the 1947 Roswell crash did involve a vehicle with an offworld origin. Unfortunately, much of the evidence dates back to the original recovery of whatever it was that was recovered.

Indeed, discussing possible government secrecy still includes Roswell. If it were a spaceship as many suggest, where is it now? Was it secreted away in an obscure warehouse after scientists failed to figure out anything about its engineering and capabilities?

That brings to mind the memorable scene at the end of the 1981 fantasy adventure film, “Raiders of the Lost Arc,” in which the recovered Arc of the Covenant is packed away in a crowded, dusty warehouse never to be seen again.

That scene clearly influenced a sci-fi TV show broadcast from 2009-2014, “Warehouse 13.” The series focused on a network of secret warehouses around the world that contained obscure and sometimes magical artifacts.

I enjoyed the series, for the most part, until it “jumped the shark” in its last years when the creators evidently ran out of story ideas. But I had to wonder if an “out of sight, out of mind” approach might apply to something like the Roswell craft, if it was a craft.

You would think that there would be concerted, ongoing efforts to reverse engineer its technology. But that process may require bureaucrats monitoring the situation over the years and perhaps applying black budget funding to continue the research. Perhaps, after a decade or two, without any concrete results, and with negative responses from supervisors for the ongoing inaction, they might just gave up.

Now that might seem difficult to believe. After all, the recovery of a real spaceship, a craft that was built on another planet, would be a story of the ages! All of our dreams about an inhabited universe would be answered, at least if we can figure out what it was about.

It reminds me to some extent of the initial Area 51 scenes in the 1996 popcorn flick, “Independence Day.” A mad or eccentric scientist, played by Brent Spiner (best known as Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation) admits that he and his colleagues can’t get past the advanced technology of a recovered spaceship.

But what about other possible recovered spaceships?

Well, that remains a matter of debate among UFO researchers. A number of cases have been considered, but the Roswell episode has stood the test of time. At least, people still write about it, and the city of some 47,000 people has continued to benefit from tourism.

But as I said, the only evidence by and large consists of memories of what happened when the object crashed. There have been questionable claims, such as the ones in the book, “The Day After Roswell,” from Philip Corso and William Birnes, about placing reverse engineered technology in a file cabinet, and quietly distributing it to private industry.

But those claims are easy to dispute, just by looking at the history of those technologies, which can be easily traced back to the work of engineers and scientists even before the Roswell incident.

I hesitate to take seriously the Roswell claims from former Air Force intelligence operative Bill Doty, voiced on The Paracast and elsewhere.

So if the government still has the wreckage on hand, where is it? What are they doing with it? Would it have been handed out to private industry, the better to give the government plausible deniability in the event the President or Congress demanded the truth?

Regardless of where it might be, if it exists of course, if there’s an ongoing effort to figure out the technology, surely someone, somewhere, would spill the details despite the possible consequences for violating the nation’s security laws. While it’s fair to say that the vast majority of people in the know would keep the secret, surely someone, somewhere, would feel the need to accept the consequences, at least if some evidence could be put forward to confirm such claims.

Indeed, just how can physical proof that we are being visited by extraterrestrials be kept secret for over 75 years? Does it pass through the generations from one bureaucrat to another, never to be revealed to any temporary occupant of a government office unless there’s a need to know?

That might explain why no U.S. President has ever revealed any knowledge about UFOs. Some claim that Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon actually saw alien bodies, but they’re just claims. There’s no evidence to support them.

I suppose Eisenhower, a decorated military leader, might have known something that he took to his grave. He was the sort of person, a devoted patriot, who’d honor his commitments. Nixon? Well we all know his sordid history, which is why he might never have been told.

You’d think someone high in the intelligence, say a CIA director, would know something. But based on the UFO-related statements of two former occupants of that office, Robert James Woolsey Jr. and John Owen Brennan, they have also been kept in the dark.

There has been optimism in light of the ongoing UAP projects that have come into play since the first The New York Times story appeared in 2017, but it doesn’t seem as if they are getting much done. There are just promises, with no indication they intend to, or care about, sightings that do not involve the military and/or occurred before 2004.

The long and short is that I am skeptical that governments know the truth about what UFOs are. Where secrecy comes into play, it’s about hiding information about new weaponry or aircraft, or other facts that might impact national security.

But not that ET is here.

Sure, maybe UFOs are from other planets, but I wouldn’t depend on any Earth government to know the truth, or if they do, ever revealing it.

Sure, ET could answer all of our questions by landing in a public place and introducing themselves. But does anyone out there seriously expect that to happen in the foreseeable future?
