Assuming Facts Without Proof
By Gene Steinberg

When people mention UFOs, they usually mean spaceships. People who believe UFOs to be something other than conventional objects or phenomena generally attribute the phenomenon to visits by beings from other worlds. This so-called ETH, short for extraterrestrial hypothesis, dates back decades. But the fundamentals have barely changed.

In the early days, such UFO investigators as the late Major Donald E. Keyhoe, suggested that the UFOs came from nearby planets, perhaps even Mars. But as we discovered that Mars and other planets in our solar system had surface conditions that were, at the very least, unsuitable for life as we know it, or any advanced lifeforms, we began to look outward, far outward, to other star systems.

So maybe the specifics about the source had changed, but it was still just more ETH. Once that theory became accepted by more and more people in the UFO field, expectations were less about getting answers to persuading others to tell us what they knew. If we have been visited by spaceships for decades, or even hundreds or thousands of years, wouldn’t those in charge know about it?

Certainly the expectation that someone has the answers takes the pressure off. You don’t have to investigate anything. You just demand action from those who are keeping the secret. Once they reveal that secret, everything will be right in the world, or at least we will know the truth about what we are confronting.

But that assumes somebody knows the truth, and that may not be true. That also assumes that UFOs are actually spaceships, and that could be true. But we don’t have any final evidence that this is so. Yes, people see UFOs. Yes, some of those UFOs are photographed and filmed, and at least some of those pictures do not appear to be faked. Yes, UFOs are sometimes seen visually and on radar at the same time. Yes, UFOs sometimes leave trace evidence. Yes, mysterious entities, clearly alien, are sometimes seen in connection with UFO sightings.

You can go through all the mundane explanations. Some UFOs are airplanes or planets or stars seen under unusual conditions. Test aircraft might explain some sightings, and other UFOs may be some sort of natural phenomenon. Indeed, over 90% of the sightings appear to have conventional explanations, so they are really IFOs or Identified Flying Objects.

The entire mystery is all about the residue, the sightings that cannot be explained, and that’s where assumptions are being made.

When you ask for evidence of the ETH, the response often involves a process of elimination. The objects appear to be physical, intelligently controlled, and we do not have any terrestrial aircraft that can match them in perceived maneuverability. So if we aren’t responsible for UFOs, it must be ET. What other explanation can there be?

Now debating other possible origins is not necessarily a major distinction. So you can talk about possible time travelers, dimensional portals, and maybe even a hidden race that occupies caverns, mountain tops, or perhaps exists in cities beneath the oceans. It’s still all about physical aircraft and where the pilots come from.

But it may be more complicated than that. In his appearances on The Paracast and elsewhere, long-time UFO historian Jerome Clark has talked of two different mysteries. One is the event phenomenon, consisting of the UFO cases that convey the impression of being physical aircraft possibly from other worlds. There is also the experiential phenomenon, involving people who have strange and often frightening experiences, including possible UFO abductions. The experiences, by and large, are not accompanied by any physical evidence, but are usually limited to eyewitness testimony.

All right, with UFO abductions, some people have reportedly received alleged alien implants, perhaps some sort of futuristic RFD chip that may be used to keep tabs on them. It’s hard to know because, while some implants have been recovered, there doesn’t seem to be any clear evidence of what they really are. But if the experiences exist solely in one’s mind, how could there possibly be physical evidence of any kind?

The ongoing problem with UFO evidence is that we get close but no closer. There are tantalizing hints at a larger reality that may embrace visitors from other worlds or at least from somewhere else. Perhaps with enough mainstream scientists tackling the problem, maybe we would be closer to an answer. So far, however, the phenomenon appears to stay one or more steps ahead of us, ever elusive, with no solutions in sight.

Some suggest the inability to find the end of the rainbow is deliberate, and we have little or no control over the outcome. You chase the phenomenon in one direction, and it moves in another. When some suggest we may never learn the answers in our lifetimes, that does appear to be a reasonable conclusion. It’s not as if we have come any closer after all these years of chasing UFOs.

But the larger question is where to go next. It may be convenient and comforting to expect the governments of the world to reveal the truth, if only you apply the right amount of pressure. But that doesn’t appear to be the case. There is no smoking gun yet to indicate that any authority has guilty knowledge of what’s really going on. Sure, maybe they do, and maybe they believe they are protecting the populace from mass panic by not letting us in on the secret.

In the meantime, however, all those UFO clubs around the world haven’t done much more than collect sightings and sometimes publish the reports. How much actual effort is being expended to sift through all that data and see where it leads? Oh, that’s right! UFOs are spaceships, so we already know the answers, and we are just collecting evidence to help validate those answers.

But since no theory has been proven, is it even possible to set limits on the scope of the evidence? What about sightings of strange creatures and other events that seem to occur in the vicinity of the appearance of UFOs? Is it just an arbitrary decision to declare them separate mysteries? Does the widespread belief in the ETH constrain investigators from finding out what is really going on?

... But the larger question is where to go next ...

The above question is the most important question of the entire newsletter. I keep coming back to the idea that whether or not the aliens are from another planet, or another universe, or a secret society on Earth, it's all beside the point, because they're all still freakin' alien regardless of where they come from! That alone should be good enough to make people sit up and take a second look, but it's like everyone is walking around like the people in the movie They Live. The idea behind that title was that they ( the aliens ) live while we sleep ( are oblivious to their presence ). Anyone who goes on any kind of rant about aliens are crazy like some sort of religious fanatic. Here's a clip for those who don't know what we're talking about.

The bottom line may not be as dramatic as our cult classic above, but we still don't really need the government to tell us that alien visitation is real. We already know. And by we, I mean those of us who actually do know regardless of whatever the skeptics or the authorities have to say. So it's up to us to preserve the historical records, spread information, and investigate to the extent our resources allow. There's nothing else we can do except network. To do that a whole community like Ufoland is way to cult oriented. Yet somehow they've done it ( whacky as they are ). So why can't we? I think it's because our lives are integrated into society in such a way that we need to go on living like the so-called normal people in order to survive and make our way in the world. Yet all the while we know that the so-called normal people have a completely out of touch worldview when it comes to the reality of alien visitation. Worse yet they think we're the ones who are out of touch, or in league with the Devil, or psychologically challenged, or whatever. It's just bizarre.

I'm not sure where to put this ... YOU all brought up Roswell. Why would the Army-Airforce feel compelled to make any statement at all? That is, so a rancher saw whatever he saw. Ask him to be quiet, pick up debris and expect the story to disappear. BUT they felt compelled to make a 'statement.' AND why cover-up a Mogul balloon wreck (ha!) with a story about a disk, i.e., the UFO would be expected to be far more explosive than a public revelation of any Mogul Balloon operations. AND why didn't they make such a hub-bub about AL:L the other Mogul Balloons that went down?

A statement had to be made b/c of a previous statement confirming UFO wreckage. So either it was totally misidentified, and perhaps was an experimental craft disaster not to be talked about, something that went so wrong that it still has to be lied about to this day...or ET crashed in the desert.

You can flip coins on those possibilities all day long and absolutely nothing will come of it, ever. Unless someone reveals real proof there is no where to go.

As for where to go next, in terms of gaining more traction on the subject, either we learn to interact with the phenomenon or interupt it somehow, or we get lots of $$$ together to study it more thoroughly with the best tools and brainpower we can muster. This type of scientific investigation needs to be carried out in an open forum that builds upon previous knowledge and discovery. To do this we need a more regulated, consistent approach that defines and reevaluates strategies constantly to determine true best practices when it comes to measuring events, understanding experiences and comparing these to comparable events and experiences.
