Listen each week to the great stories of the history of the paranormal field in the 20th and 21st centuries.

This Week's Episode: Gene and Chris present Margie Kay, Assistant State Director for Missouri MUFON for a very nuts and bolts UFO session. The main focus will be what Margie regards as "an extraordinary number of sightings in Kansas City during two UFO flaps in 2011 and 2012 with some amazing close encounters, missing time, and possible abductions. I even had my own sightings along with other witnesses." She'll also be discussing various paranormal events, such as weird sounds reported by some people in her area.

All Right, So UFOs Are Still Here
By Gene Steinberg

From time to time, I’ve read stories that the original UFOs that started the modern UFO era beginning in 1947 are no longer here. We don’t have those incredible simultaneous radar/visual reports that caught the public’s imagination in the 1950s. They don’t switch direction on a dime, or cause electrical systems to fail. And certainly we don’t have blond-haired human-like aliens delivering messages of peace and love, and why we really need to join the galactic brotherhood.

What about crashes in the desert? Well, maybe the UFOs are built better these days, so they can manage to stay aloft when tracked by our radar?

I suppose if you read one of those nuts and bolts UFO books from the 1950s and 1960s, from such authors as Major Donald Keyhoe and Edward Ruppelt, you might quickly conclude that such craft just weren’t being seen near as often -- or at all. So you might as well get on with your life, figuring how to cope in a world where it seems the problems just continue to get worse, and maybe forget about UFOs for good.

But wouldn’t it be nice if ET came here to get us out of this mess?

Consider, also, the change in public perceptions about UFOs. Over the years, polls have shown that roughly half the people in the U.S. believe that UFOs are real, most likely visitors from another planet, likely orbiting another star system. Well, at least that’s what the surveys indicated through the 1990s.

A more recent survey taken in connection with the launch of the National Geographic cable TV reality show, “Chasing UFOs,” indicated that the number of believers was roughly a third. You wonder how and why things changed so significantly. Is it possible the population of the U.S. is less inclined to regard UFOs as a matter of any significance, let alone real?

I’m not about to evaluate someone’s belief system, because beliefs may often be divorced from reality. Indeed, a recent poll indicated that some 17% of the people in the U.S. (and I suspect most of these are Republicans) believe that President Obama is a Muslim. Another 49% correctly identified Obama as a Christian, while the rest said they just didn’t know. Yet another survey indicated that a quarter of the American people don’t even believe Obama was born in the U.S., even though the law specifies that only a “natural born” citizen is allowed to run for President.

Now I’m not about to get into the whys and wherefores of a particular set of beliefs, or how they impact the polarized political climate. Depending on your point of view, you may regard any of those survey results as wacky, while the other figures may make perfect sense.

Obviously, when it comes to someone’s professed religion or citizenship, there can be only one truth for either, while the other opinions must be wrong. Well, I suppose someone could attend houses of worship from different religions without being aligned with any of them.

With UFOs, we are dealing with a phenomenon where there may be many truths. You can believe what you want, but that doesn’t mean your theory is necessarily the correct one. Indeed, the real cause of the UFO mystery may be something we do not yet understand. There may not be one absolute truth, but many answers depending on your beliefs, expectations, and, perhaps, the choices made by the force or forces behind the phenomenon.

However, one thing is certain: While the ways in which UFOs manifest themselves may or may not have changed over the years, the mystery still exists. It is as tantalizing and as puzzling as ever. It has nothing whatever to do with whether you or I believe in them. At the same time, it’s always possible the phenomenon is reflected in what we expect of it.

Now on The Paracast this weekend, we’ll be featuring Margie Kay, the Assistant State Director for Missouri MUFON, and a long-time UFO and paranormal investigator, who found herself in the thick of it when a wave of sightings occurred in and around Kansas City beginning 2011 and continuing up until just a few weeks ago. As you’ll learn from her clear, detailed and compelling descriptions, the sightings ran the gamut, and even included reports of a mile-wide disk-shaped aircraft seen at very close range.

When I heard that description, I thought of the popcorn sci-fi movie from the 1990s, “Independence Day,” where immense spaceships hovered over major cities around the planet. Of course, that movie was simply the latest incarnation in the disaster film genre; E.T. was here to destroy us. The craft seen in the Kansas City area didn’t demonstrate any hostile motives.

But one thing is sure: Almost every sort of classic UFO sighting you’ve read about was replicated in that UFO flap. Large craft? Check. Close encounters? Check. Amazing maneuvers? Check. Electromagnetic effects? Check. Possible abductions? Check. Missing time? Check. The possible presence of government agents? Check. Cattle mutilations? Check.

Indeed, Ms. Kay is busy writing a book about the flap and, as you’ll learn from this weekend’s episode, she has a wealth of compelling material to present. But she’s not alone. If you read MUFON’s monthly magazine over the past year or so, you’ll find an amazing number of new UFO cases, and not just in Missouri.

Over the years, in fact, whenever it seemed as if UFOs weren’t being seen very often, things suddenly changed. So maybe the UFOs never left us. Maybe we just weren’t paying attention to what was still going on around us.

Regarding the wide range of UFOs reported in the Kansas City region, also add to the list, "most probably misidentified as Arcturus" ( UFO Mystery Continues over Missouri | Page 2 | The Paracast Community Forums ). This I'm sure qualifies as one of the "many truths" out there that explain what the objects in at least some UFO reports are. As for the ones that remain unexplained, our advancement toward the truth is best facilitated by the use of critical thinking. While I agree that everyone has a right to their opinion, not every theory is as good as the next, therefore it is up to those who believe that one hypothesis is better than another to provide reasons based on that process. Only by evaluating the evidence in this way will we make meaningful progress.
