Listen each week to the great stories of the history of the paranormal field in the 20th and 21st centuries.

This Week's Episode: Gene and Chris present UFO investigator and optical scientist Dr. Bruce Maccabee to talk about his newest book entitled, "The FBI-CIA-UFO Connection." This is a provocative look at what these agencies know about the UFO phenomenon, and what the author claims are their efforts to conceal the truth from the public. What the government may or may not know about UFOs has long been a subject of speculation. Getting a handle on what evidence they might have has been a goal of researchers for decades, and we are all curious to see just what evidence Dr. Maccabee has delivered.

It’s Not About You, It’s Not About Me
By Gene Steinberg

In almost every field of endeavor, some rise to the top of the heap. They are regarded as leaders, or perhaps celebrities. People look up to them, even regard them as gurus, or perhaps important sources of entertainment. They become highly respected and sometimes even become more important than what they do.

Over the years, some people who chose to get involved in the UFO mess have also became famous, or close to famous. You bought their books, attended their lectures, and paused your daily routine to watch them on TV, or catch them on a radio show. You assumed they know something you don’t, that they have the expertise to sort things out, or perhaps have had an otherworldly experience that will shed light about what’s really happening.

There’s nothing wrong with any of this. Confronted by a mystery that, so far at least, doesn’t have a final solution, it’s nice to know or at least believe that there are people out there who may be in on the secret. But how do we know they possess the truth? Well, in many cases, it’s because they tell us so.

How do we learn that secret? Well, perhaps buy their books, attend the lectures, or take a private tour in order to unearth the information that only they can convey to you. You become a member of an exclusive club that possesses a truth that others cannot know; well, at least not until the world is ready to accept that truth.

Quite often the people who claim to possess a special knowledge assert they are preparing to reveal everything. That revelation will come during the next year or the year after that, so just stick with them and you will share in those revelations.

Unfortunately, it seems that the revelations never come. There may be reasons for the delay, excuses perhaps, that seem perfectly reasonable, and you understand that fate might intervene and change situations unexpectedly. So you continue to believe, and wait patiently for further developments.

As you know, the modern UFO era began in earnest in 1947 with Kenneth Arnold’s classic UFO sighting. Over the years there have been countless promises that we were on the verge of a breakthrough. In the early days, it was the promise of hearings in the halls of Congress that would force the military to come clean on what UFOs were all about, with the assumption they were real, physical aircraft from other planets.

The closest we came were the hearings that brought about the Condon Committee in 1966. The results, in 1968, gave the Air Force cover to shutter Project Blue Book, which was mostly a PR gimmick anyway. It’s not at all certain how much intensive investigation really went on beyond the level of cursory examinations except for a small number of sightings. The rest were essentially dismissed out of hand as conventional objects or phenomena, or perhaps hoaxes.

The Committee’s work was tainted early on with the release of a memo from one of its members, Robert J. Low, indicating they didn’t expect the study to provide evidence of UFO reality. While the report contained a number of compelling cases, the official conclusion, that there was nothing significant about UFOs, merely echoed Low’s memo.

It seemed as if the UFO field was stung big time by this revelation and the end of Project Blue Book, but many gamely continued to do their thing, and the sightings never stopped. Every few years, waves of UFO reports brought the subject to the public’s attention anew, almost as if the Condon Committee never existed. That was yesterday’s news. The UFOs presented a clear and present phenomenon that cried out to be solved.

Naturally the UFO hucksters continued to find ways to exploit research, to twist the facts to make it seem as if they had access to secret information that would blow the lid off the secrecy. Year after year, you heard the promise of “disclosure,” the admission that the government knew the truth, and perhaps had interacted with aliens for reasons best known to themselves.

There were also theories suggesting that the U.S. government, in particular, made a deal with ET to allow them to abduct private citizens and subject them to sometimes painful and strangely primitive physical experiments. Now it may well be that abductions present evidence of alien visitations, although there are other theories. But that is not proof of government collusion by any means.

But to people who claim to be in the know, it’s just another arrow in their arsenal to present the impression that they actually possess significant knowledge, and can guide you to the way and the truth about UFOs.

Yes, there are many well meaning people, without questionable agendas, who do believe that disclosure is the only valid way to bring the UFO mystery to its natural conclusion.

Moreover, I have no problem with someone earning an honest living. Some say that UFO researchers who earn money from books, public events and other pursuits should be suspect because they must be in it for the almighty dollar, or whatever currency they trade in.

That’s a very shortsighted approach, though. Do you also question the honesty of mainstream scientists and engineers because they are paid for their work? What about doctors? Do you assume a doctor asks you to come back for a follow-up visit merely to earn another fee?

Well, let me stop there. I do know of one such doctor, a now-retired dermatologist, who kept asking patients to return monthly even if they had strictly minor conditions. Since he retired several years ago, there is no reason to mention his name.

The long and short of it, however, is that the field of UFO research is not about the notables who attract audiences to lectures and TV shows, and write books for loyal readers. It’s all about the phenomenon and what level of reality you can apply to an assortment of strange events.

Is it all about visits from ET? Do people in our own government, private industry, or a combination of the two, know the facts and only need to be persuaded that we can handle the truth? When or if that truth is known, will it have anything at all to do with those who have become famous in this field?

I doubt it. It’s not about the people but the mystery.
