What Do You Mean They Don’t Know?

By Gene Steinberg

With all the chatter over the years about government secrecy over the reality of UFOs, you might just wonder just what is it that they really know? If you include the Foo Fighters and Ghost Rockets in and around World War II, there ought to be millions upon millions of documents stored somewhere about the phenomenon.

Add to that the possibility — unproved despite the claims and evidence — that one or more crashed spaceships are being held somewhere, then you would feel safe in assuming that the U.S. government knows an awful lot. The same can be said for foreign governments.

How, after all these years, could they not possess a significant trove of data that would confirm UFO reality? If they are spaceships, as most people who believe in the phenomenon hope and expect, that should be a given. Even if it can’t be proven, there ought to be enough evidence in the way of sightings, including eyewitness testimony, pictures, radar records, and possible trace evidence, to paint a compelling picture of where the answers might lie.

Now some might suggest that extraterrestrials have already communicated with one or more Earth governments. Perhaps they have made a deal to conceal the truth until they regard the populace as ready to deal with it. In the meantime, the authorities debunk and deflect the truth. A little misinformation action may also be appropriate to maintain the secret.

That more or less describes how governments have generally reacted to sightings. Even when they agree to investigate, as the U.S. Air Force did with Project Blue Book, it’s all a PR pose. They know what’s really going on.

Now perhaps the truth is out there, but buried at levels way above Top Secret, meaning that only a small number of individuals have the need to know. The rest are kept ignorant, and that might include the temporary leadership class, such as those who got their positions by way of election or appointment.

In other words, the President of the United States is not among those who are told the secret.

But that would not seem to make a whole lot of sense. Couldn’t any President just demand that his military leaders reveal the truth and be entitled to receive the relevant documents, regardless of classification, without undue delay?

Consider, though, Presidents who made promises of one sort or another to get to the bottom of the mystery. After Carter, Clinton and other Presidents were sworn in, however, it seemed as if such promises were forgotten.

But change is here. That New York Times story in 2017, revealing the existence of a Pentagon UAP investigation project, may have been the result of investigative reporting, all right. It may also have been the result of a targeted leak to begin to prepare the public for some level of disclosure. But I am not suggesting that the authors of the Times story were aware of such a thing.

Since it happened, most of the reports published in the so-called mainstream media have been pretty straightforward. We learn of Naval sightings and videos, plus eyewitness testimony that has been presented on 60 Minutes and a host of cable TV interview segments. Whether conservative, liberal, or presumably fair and balanced, you rarely hear the sarcasm and skepticism that dominated previous coverage.

In June, the Pentagon UAP Task Force, according to the appropriations bill signed into law in December, 2020, is supposed to present a report to Congress. That’s the law, though you wonder what sort of remedies Congress would seek if folks in charge asked for a little more time. Or delivered an incomplete report, asserting the matter was still under investigation, and that more funds should be appropriated to continue the work.

There has certainly been a huge build up, and hardly a day passes where I don’t find a new UFO/UAP story posted on Apple News or Google News, or any of the other news outlets that I check regularly.

Again, I have to wonder what they really know.

Consider the CIA. One would think that any significant evidence of UFO reality would be in their possession, right? But at least three CIA directors have said the matter needs to be investigated, presumably unaware of any such thing. That takes us back to the very first leader, Rear Admiral Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter, who took on the position after being named by President Truman in 1947.

After retirement, Hillenkoetter went on to join his former Annapolis classmate, Major Donald E. Keyhoe, on the Board of Governors of a UFO club, NICAP. This came at a time when Keyhoe was busy lobbying Congress to hold hearings and get to the bottom of the flying saucer conspiracy.

In those days, NICAP was often attacked by skeptical UFO researchers for the presence of too many ex-military personnel on its Board.

Two of Hillenkoetter’s successors have, in recent years, also said UFOs represent a serious matter that needs to be investigated. They include R. James Woolsey, who headed the CIA during the Clinton administration from 1993 until 1995, and John O. Brennan, who held the position from 2013 to 2017 after being appointed to that post by President Obama.

There are other government officials saying positive things about getting to the bottom of the UFO mystery. That’s promising, and these are the sort of people that you’d expect to be extremely cautious about the things they say, especially in such a politically polarized environment.

Indeed, such positive UFO comments have come from Democrats and Republicans alike. It’s almost as if the statements were choreographed to reflect a positive attitude, but still meant to stop short of suggesting that UFOs come from somewhere beyond Earth. It’s a red line they won’t cross.

But I wonder. You’d think some of those people would have the authority to know what was truly going on. Yet their comments reflect the attitude of outsiders who are curious about UFOs, but have no answers.

How can that be?

Or, as some suggest, perhaps the secret exists at levels beyond their presumed need to know. Or maybe, just maybe, it is quite true that the matter has been swept under the rug and has remained there, year in and year out and regardless of the number of military sightings that have occurred.

Out of sight, out of mind makes sense too. It doesn’t require a conspiratorial mind to suggest that they just didn’t want to deal with it, until they had to.
