The Paracast -- Stage Two

When The Paracast debuted in February, 2006, I can honestly tell you that nobody had a clue about its potential. It was just an experiment, but that’s also true of my technology show, The Tech Night Owl LIVE, which arrived in the fall of 2003, before there was actually such a thing as a podcast.

The fact that The Paracast was embraced worldwide so quickly amazed us, but it also presented a huge challenge to present cutting-edge discussions, designed to actually separate fact from fiction.

You see, most shows covering the paranormal are in it to deliver amazing stories without critical comment. So the few programs who care about factual content are left to struggle in a huge mud pile to get an audience’s attention.

Certainly The Paracast has become extremely organic, surviving the departure of one of the original co-hosts and moving to a revolving co-host setup. I have been extremely pleased at the amazing response from listeners like you, which is particularly heartwarming in light of the severe rough spots in my own personal journey that I hope will soon be resolved.

Now some of you have asked why I got involved in this crazy venture in the first place. Well that takes me back to my childhood, when I often ignored the wishes of my parents to get to sleep and, instead, listened to the all night chatter on the Long John Nebel radio show.

Long John, who died in 1978, had a fascinating personal life story, but, ever the carnival barker, you had to wonder how much of it was truly real. In any case, you can make what you will of his biography on Wikipedia, available at: Wikimedia Error.

The show aired weeknights from midnight until 5:00 AM, originally on New York’s powerhouse radio station, WOR. Because of the way AM radio works, and as the result of its 50,000 watt non-directional broadcast signal, you could hear WOR in dozens of states, although the signal quality varied from near-perfection to a barely audible signal drowned in a sea of background noise. But it also gave Long John a potential nightly audience in the millions, consisting of both night owls and people who had to work in the wee hours.

I was most intrigued by his ongoing discussions of UFOs and, of course, conspiracy theories. Long John’s format included a panel of regulars who, depending on his mood or strategy (take your choice) would simply question a guest or pounce on that person mercilessly. So you’d hear from such figures in the UFO field as Major Donald E. Keyhoe, George Adamski, and even my old friend Jim Moseley, who also became a panelist on the show.

I never made the guest roster, although my late brother, Wallace Herbert Steinberg, joined the panel for a single night. He never went back, and I never knew for sure whether that was his decision or Long John’s.

When you hear about people like Art Bell or his successors on the Coast To Coast AM radio show, just remember that Long John, for better or worse, came to the table first, and all of us who labor in this business owe him a huge debt of gratitude.

In saying that, I’ve one more announcement to make: In the next few weeks, The Paracast will move into syndication to local radio stations in the U.S. Although we’ll be on a network, you’ll still be able to hear “live” and “on-demand” radio streams online, and each episode will be available, as before, via iTunes or one of the other podcast aggregators.

As The Paracast begins to reach a wider audience, I assure you we won’t lose sight of our purpose, and that is to provide informed conversation on the paranormal. We will never be afraid to expose the charlatans and the deluded, to, once again, separate the signal from the noise.

Peace,
Gene Steinberg
