This Week's Episode: Gene and cohost Tim Swartz introduce researcher Robert Bitto of Mexico Unexplained! He explores all sorts of strange occurrences in that country through the ages, ranging from UFOs, including a possible crash in 1949, to monsters and such as cryptids, strange ancient artifacts of unknown origin, and even a possible instance or two of teleportation that involve a mysterious journey from one location in one country, to another and lots of other reports of strange phenomena. His site also includes reports of giants and possible werewolves. Bitto has had over 30 years of experience in Mexico, as a student, as an employee for a large multinational corporation and as an owner of an imports business founded in 1999, Sueños Latin American Imports. He was a professional researcher from 1990 to 1993, and in addition to his MBA and MA, he holds an MBA in Latin American Studies from the University of New Mexico. He's clearly a very smart guy, having also been president of the San Diego chapter of Mensa from 2015-2016.

After The Paracast — Available exclusively for Paracast+ subscribers on May 28: Paranormal researcher Robert Bitto of Mexico Unexplained! continues to explore amazing encounters through the ages in that country. He joins Gene and cohost Tim Swartz to cover such topics as our ongoing fascination with monster tales, the reality behind ancient artifacts, possible dimensional portals or hot spots where frequent paranormal events occur and other mysteries from Mexico. Gene reveals a possible paranormal experience involving a pagan woman, a friend of his, who predicted his further career direction years ago. Stuck in a Rut
By Gene Steinberg

Regular readers to these columns might criticize me for repeating some of the old stories about UFO research, or perhaps my decades-long involvement in the field. Now I’d like to think that I’ve learned a thing or two over the years. Perhaps I have, and I’m sure many of you have also. But things never seem to change all that much.

Sometimes they do, at least a little bit.

So these days, admitting you saw a UFO or talking about the subject doesn’t carry as much of a stigma as it used to. The media is not as apt to label you as just an “ET believer,” a fan of little green men (but seldom women), or something worse. There is a serious (it seems) program by the Pentagon to investigate the UAP mystery. Sure, they keep asserting they have no evidence that we’re being visited by extraterrestrials, but that’s an old story. It’s repeated all the time, but the evidence they will accept isn’t being defined.

I would assume that they can dispute the reality of most anything except an actual public landing. Then the excuses go out the window, unless they want us all to believe it’s about Hollywood-style special effects.

Since sightings have occurred for so long, and that’s just the modern era that began in 1947, I suppose the authorities do not expect that there will be any answers anytime soon. The mystery will persist, and one guess is just about as good as another.

But the lack-of-evidence-excuse has been made since the early days. It never changes, even when there are increased hopes that some real progress will be made this time.

At the very least, the excuses have borne out. Despite all the hopes, and all those incredible accounts about aircraft that can exceed the capabilities of the best of known Earth technology, evidence that would meet the usual scientific requirements doesn’t seem to be at hand.

Sure, we have reports of flying saucer crashes, the most significant of which was probably the incident at Roswell, New Mexico, also in 1947. But final proof of what really occurred is still lacking, or at least not accessible by investigators. So we are left with sometimes contradictory anecdotal testimony.

True, the case does not appear to have been solved. Aside from the usual exaggerations and the false claims of people seeking publicity, something appears to have occurred then and there is no resolution as to what it was or where the wreckage was taken.

The same may be said for the 1996 crash report in Varginha, Brazil, which involved sightings of shiny gray-skinned alien beings. It was reported that the evidence was handed off to U.S. authorities, meaning they have at least two cases to explore.

Claims have been made about the Roswell wreckage, that scientists continue to attempt to reverse engineer alien technology. Some of our inventions, such as fiber optic cables, printed circuit boards and night vision goggles, are said to have been developed with at least a boost from what we learned about the Roswell saucer.

Perhaps, but there is no evidence that this is so. It’s also an attack on the dedicated engineers and scientists who labored for years to deliver the goods.

The same argument may be made about ancient artifacts, such as the pyramids in Egypt. Is it possible that Earth people were given some help by ET? I suppose it’s possible, but that assumes that we weren’t capable of somehow doing it ourselves, and archeologists have suggested how it might have occurred without the need for divine intervention.

If you consider all the sightings before 1947, it’s fair to suggest that the UFO mystery is an age-old phenomenon. There have been sightings through the ages, and some elements of those reports appear to be similar to more recent ones. It doesn’t take a stretch to assume that the causes are the same.

Now this might be a lesson for future space explorers from Earth. We might land on an inhabited planet and, if we take a few precautions, the locals won’t find out what we’re up to, or even if we exist. It wouldn’t even require a non-interference prime directive.

That said, just where do we go from here? Does spending a few million additional dollars for UAP research make a difference? Would that take us closer to a solution, or is it possible those in power already know the answers? Maybe they are communicating with aliens, and have made a pact with them to allow surveillance without interference, or without much interference. But our visitors have to agree not to harm Earthlings.

Of course, people who claim to have been injured while in proximity to a UFO might feel otherwise. Assuming the same cause, one can suggest that accidents do happen even with the best of intentions. Just because our presumed visitors are far more advanced in developing technological toys doesn’t mean they can’t make mistakes.

Or even that their ships can’t crash on occasion.

So is there any hope at all that we will get the final answer in the lifetimes of most listeners to The Paracast?

If I take myself as an example, it’s doubtful. I have already seen a number of close friends in the field pass on to their final rewards. During their lifetimes, we essentially got nowhere.

More and more sightings accumulate, although the easy online access and the availability of fancy video editing tools for little or no money, mean that fakery is not difficult. Some of it looks pretty decent if you don’t look too closely.

Even if you discard the hoaxes, we’re still back essentially to square one. Having more scientists involved, at least publicly, in UFO research, has yet to deliver the goods. We still don’t know what’s out there and whether we can ever solve the mystery.

There are people who claim to know the answers, perhaps that those answers were conveyed to them by higher beings. But they are just claims without real proof.

In other words, we’re still essentially in a rut when it comes to final solutions.
