This Week's Episode: UFO researcher and religious scholar David Halperin returns to talk about his recent columns about UFOs and the Bible, including the theories that ancient man was visited by beings from outer space. He continues to focus on his theory that UFOs are a myth, manifestations of a collective unconscious, and not physical spaceships from other planets. Back in the 1960s, David was a teenage UFO investigator. Later he became a professor of religious studies — his specialty, religious traditions of heavenly ascent. From 1976 through 2000, David taught Jewish history in the Religious Studies Department at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He’s the author of five non-fiction books on Jewish mysticism and messianism, the coming-of-age novel Journal of a UFO Investigator, and Intimate Alien: The Hidden Story of the UFO.

Now About UFO Technology

By Gene Steinberg

For decades, people following UFO lore have been debating their reality. Are they spaceships, misidentified conventional objects, test aircraft, natural phenomena, or perhaps manifestations of our collective unconscious? Add to that theories of a multiverse, time travelers from the future and other concepts sci-fi writers have added to our culture.

Maybe our “visitors” are pure energy beings, capable of creating any reality they wish at the flick of a finger — or whatever they possess that passes for a finger. As depicted in some sci-fi shows — and Stargate SG-1 is an example — humans may evolve to the point where they can “ascend” to a higher level. And let’s not forget the reality-bending abilities of the “Q Continuum” from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

But it’s not just sci-fi. People who claim to have been in touch with extraterrestrials or some sort of “higher” intelligence assert that those beings have attained a higher level of evolution. Perhaps we are one day destined to get there too, should the human race survive long enough.

The problem with all this is that it doesn’t reach beyond the realm of speculation. It’s not that you can actually prove higher beings are here and are what they claim to be. Assuming the experiencer is accurately reporting what is happening to them — and let’s do that for the sake of argument — it doesn’t mean they aren’t being deceived. Maybe they are interacting with some sort of mysterious force, but that doesn’t mean what it tells them should be believed.

Even if there’s truth to it, the information might just be tailored to make it more acceptable. Maybe we aren’t capable of understanding our visitors in their true form, or even why they are here. How can we possibly understand the motivations of advanced alien beings. It would be little different than explaining our motives to the family cat.

Now maybe I am applying too much credit to whatever is causing the presence of UFOs and other phenomena. Maybe, aside from their technology, they aren’t so different after all. Aside from a more sophisticated bag of tricks, they might be confronting similar problems in managing their civilization. There might still be political disputes, wars; you get the picture.

It may even be possible that the flying machines that can travel through space, across the stars, represent their sole advanced invention. They are otherwise not that far ahead of us. Indeed, with recent developments in developing warp drive, it may be that humans will be capable of interstellar travel not too many decades hence. But it won’t suddenly diminish our other problems, except, perhaps, to the changeover from fossil fuels to some sort of renewable energy system.

Remember that in Star Trek lore, warp drive will be invented in 2063, meaning we have just 42 years left to meet that goal. Maybe it’s not so far fetched after all.

Yet another possibility, not far divorced from sci-fi, is that ET has discovered technology originally developed by a long-dead civilization. It doesn’t matter how or why that civilization expired. But they left some of their aircraft and perhaps the blueprints behind, and thus, tens of thousands of years later, others came to discover that technology buried, perhaps, in a network of caves. They were able to power up the craft, maybe build new models.

Or perhaps the original civilization “ascended” and no longer needed physical conveyances to take them to other planets. The idea is surely intriguing.

Regardless, other than the having a few working spaceships around, they are otherwise not so far advanced. So when they visit Earth and perhaps kidnap some of the primitive locales for physical testing, their repertoire of medical gear is surprisingly primitive.

Through all this, though, we are assuming that the experiences people report with UFOs are physical and, further, that what they claim to see is what is actually there.

That’s certainly the simpler conclusion. After all, UFOs have been seen visually and simultaneously on radar. When they are seen to land, they may leave trace evidence, such as depressions for landing gear. That indicates physicality.

Sometimes they are photographed, although there are precious few photos that can’t be explained away as fake or too indistinct to determine what was actually recorded by the camera.

What that means, however, is that those who believe that UFOs are manifestations of our collective unconscious — or some other non-physical solution — are left in a quandary. If it’s all in our heads, individually or via a mass hallucination of some sort, how does that explain the physical aspects? Radar devices do not track our unconscious.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that what we see and what instruments may record is exactly what’s there. If we are dealing with an advanced civilization from elsewhere, they are no doubt perfectly capable of manipulating our senses and the electronic sensors. This is one of those things that we cannot prove at this stage in our development.

Consider Star Trek’s “Holodeck,” where reality is simulated within a large chamber in a way that is, for all intents and purposes, real in every sense that we can determine physicality. You can talk to people, touch them, and if they shoot you with a phaser, well you may be injured and even die from your injuries. For the Holographic Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager, it — or he — evolved into a sentient being during the course of the show.

Maybe we’ll get there some day. We can already use CGI and clever manipulation of digital recordings to provide realistic performances from actors who are no longer alive, such as Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher in the recent Star Wars films.

Maybe some day we will no longer need live performers. Or even live people for that matter. But will the AI-based humans that we produce some day become living beings too? Maybe we are there already, living, as I’ve suggested before, in a simulated reality. When you consider such possibilities, just what is reality anyway if you can create it at will with the right digital contraptions?
