Why It's Important for You to Donate to The Paracast: Although ads help cover a small part of our expenses, the income they produce is never enough to pay your humble hosts decent wages. Also, we do not receive any revenue from the ads placed on the show by our network or local stations. So we hope you're able to help fill the gap, if you can, to help us cover increasing server costs and other expenses -- or perhaps provide a little extra cash for lunch and utility bills. No contribution is too small (or too large :). It’s easy to send a donation. We have a Donate link on our home page, below the logo and audio player. Or use the Donate link on our forums, at the bottom of the sidebar on the right. You can also send your PayPal donation direct to sales (at) theparacast (dot) com.

Attention U.S. Listeners: Help Us Bring The Paracast to Your City! In the summer of 2010, The Paracast joined the GCN radio network. Please ask one of your local talk stations if they are interested in carrying The Paracast. Feel free to contact us directly with the names of programming people we might be able to contact on your behalf. We can't do this alone, and if you succeed in convincing your local station to carry the show, we'll reward you with one of our special T-shirts, and other goodies. With your help, The Paracast can grow into one of the most popular paranormal shows on the planet!

The Paracast seeks to shed light on the mysteries and complexities of our Universe and the secrets that surround us in our everyday lives.

Join long-time paranormal researcher Gene Steinberg, co-host and acclaimed field investigator Christopher O'Brien, and a panel of special guest experts and experiencers, as they explore the realms of the known and unknown. Listen each week to the great stories of the history of the paranormal field in the 20th and 21st centuries.

This Week's Episode: Getting the goods on the cattle mutilation phenomenon, as Chris presents his long-time mentor/researcher/friend David Perkins. Perkins, who does not normally do any radio shows, was one of the first mutilation researchers back in the mid-1970s. He was Linda Howe's cameraperson for the filming of A Strange Harvest in 1979 and wrote the foreword to several books from Chris. Are cattle mutilations caused by cultists, individual pranksters, or some alien entity? We'll be focusing on Chris O'Brien's book, "Stalking the Herd," and you'll hear about some of the classic cases, and the classic theories.

Staying One Step Ahead
By Gene Steinberg

One of the key reasons for believing that UFOs are spaceships is the fact that they appear to display technology far in advance of ours. In addition to flying at speeds that exceed that of our own aircraft, they seem capable of making instant pinpoint maneuvers that would tear apart our most advanced aircraft.

Since we can’t do any of those things, what else could UFOs be?

But just how far in advance are they really? Are we even seeing the actual phenomenon, or is at all something intended to divert attention from the real event? What, pray tell, is the real event anyway?

So in the late 1890s, when a strange aircraft appeared, it seemed something closer to a dirigible. In some cases, the pilots actually communicated with witnesses saying, in perfectly normal English, that they were merely testing a flying machine technology that would eventually be revealed to the world when the time was right. Or something like that.

Of course that never quite happened, although our own ability to build heavier-than-air machines advanced to a point that we apparently matched or exceeded the capabilities demonstrated in those early sightings.

Some dispute the authenticity of those cases, and it’s true that the alleged inventions never seemed to actually be revealed to the world. You almost wonder whether the information conveyed to the witnesses was merely designed for their benefit, to meet with the expectations of humans in the late 19th century.

Yet this is essentially what UFO beings have done in alleged contacts in more recent years. The witness sees what appears to be an alien craft of some sort, and when they are afforded the opportunity to communicate with a member of the crew, their belief is merely confirmed. But the technology doesn’t seem to be that much more advanced than human achievements of the time.

So the crew of the supposed spaceship in which Barney and Betty Hill found themselves displayed that infamous “star map,” which evidently depicted their point of origin. But anyone who has used the navigation system on a smartphone or tablet, such as an iPhone or iPad, knows full well that physical maps are so 20th century. Whether Apple’s Maps, or Google’s Maps, it’s all digitally displayed on an LCD screen. The directions that guide you from one location to another, say to the nearest Indian restaurant, are read aloud to you by a computerized voice, such as Siri.

If we don’t need a physical map anymore, why would the beings who confronted the Hills? Aren’t they capable of bridging the vast gulf of space between their world and ours? The answer is, of course, that they wouldn’t. Any episode of “Star Trek,” even the original series in the 1960s, would have clearly demonstrated a far more advanced depiction of how one plotted a voyage from one star system to another.

So did those alleged ETs merely present the map for the benefit of some naive human witnesses? What other reason would they have in producing evidence of a technology that seemed but a step ahead of ours?

Over the years, some UFO researchers with a more freeform point of view have suggested that the occupants of those alleged spaceships are merely play-acting for our benefit. Or we are somehow altering the experience subconsciously to conform to our culture.

So as humans moved into space, it was only natural that beings from other planets would be coming here to explore our planet.

But can we believe what they tell us? Or is that little more than some sort of sophisticated spin control designed to amuse or misdirect the locals, but hide the true origin and purpose of the visitation?

If an allegedly advanced being tells you something, why believe them? Because they can build aircraft that appears to be more advanced than ours? How does that convey the veneer of truth anyway? It may also be possible, to echo the “Star Trek” meme, that alien visitors would have their own prime directive about how to interact with the locals, particularly primitive locals. Perhaps part of that edict involves the extent or accuracy of the information they present.

If you take the concept presented so graphically in the sci-fi movie “Contact” as an example, perhaps the aliens some of you have seen aren’t the actual entities at all. Perhaps their true form is so bizarre, it would frighten us out of our wits. Or perhaps we alter what see to fit our own cultural expectations since the reality is beyond our comprehension.

So what we think we see has nothing whatever to do with the real event. We live in a society where the concept of alien life and spaceships seems almost real, considering our humble efforts at space exploration. Scientists have also reported the discovery of more and more worlds that may indeed be suitable for sustaining life as we know it.

Some even believe that the revelations of those “M-type” or “Goldilocks” planets is all about the process of gradually disclosing that ET is actually here, and is visiting us now. Maybe your best friend is an alien, in the same vein as some of those TV sitcoms. How would you know anyway? Would you watch them closely and see if they accidentally uttered “Nanu Nanu” or revealed some secret power that proved, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that they weren’t human?

Or maybe see if they sometimes duck behind a fence and morph into a frightening alien creature.

You see, we surely know that there are strange events of all kinds that are witnessed by perfectly ordinary people doing perfectly ordinary things. Such people want to trust their senses, that what they see is the actual event. But is this so? And if we lived in a society that wasn’t so bound in sci-fi conventions, would the strange things we see resemble what we see now?

So 100 years from now would the UFOs we see in any way resemble the UFOs we see now? Or would the phenomenon take on an altogether different aspect? Just saying.

After listening to this episode I'm still confused. Who is killing these cows? Is it a combination of ET, the Government, Big Beef, and local predators?? Seems to me they can all be contributing to the activity.
