The Pentagon UFO Task Force Report: Condon 1.5?

As most of you have heard, The New York Times published a story on June 3rd that appeared to blow the lid off the expected report about a Pentagon UFO study. Indeed, I first saw a notification about ut while taping a session of The Paracast featuring a quite appropriate guest, Gary Voorhis Jr.
As regular listeners know, Gary was a firsthand witness to part of the U.S.S. Nimitz "tic-tac" UFO events during the week of the 14th of November 2004. That’s one of the sightings that triggered the current serious approach to investigating the phenomenon.
The Pentagon UAP Task Force report was due by June 25th, but the usual unnamed sources leaked its basics to The New York Times, CNN and other news outlets. Indeed, as I wrote this, MSNBC was delivering news about the report that concluded that, while the Pentagon would not confirm that we were being visited by ET, they wouldn’t rule it out either.
The report also evidently suggests that at least some of the sightings might be caused by foreign hypersonic aircraft, perhaps from China or Russia, but mostly concedes that we don’t have the technology that can match what these objects can achieve.
More to the point, this story was strictly focused on military sightings over the past two decades, and not on the wider range of reports about strange flying things seen around the world since 1947 and earlier. It seems, in fact, that the report pretends the long history of the UFO phenomenon didn’t exist.
In short, it’s a cop out that will please almost nobody. Those who believe that UFOs are caused by extraterrestrial visitors — about a third of the U.S. population based on recent polling — will not see their views vindicated. Those who claim that UFOs can be easily explained by conventional objects or phenomena will also not find their points of view confirmed.
Talk about displeasing both sides.
But by leaving open the possibility of an offworld origin, it only demonstrates the need for more research and a wider collection of sighting reports.
Now we are still dealing with a report that has not officially been released. The published reports are based on what appears to be carefully calculated briefings to the mainstream media. But they also lack the fine details about the conclusions — or lack of conclusions — the report reaches.
By displeasing both sides, and mostly waffling in dealing with the possible causes of those military UFO sightings, maybe it’s hoped that the reports will be dull enough not to dominate the news cycle. After a few days, the coverage will diminish and will mostly revert to occasional features, and the usual polarized speculation in the UFO field.
At least, it’s a hell of a sight better than what veteran UFO investigator, Kevin D. Randle, expected. He talked of “Condon 2.0” in his recent appearance on The Paracast; in other words a total whitewash in the tradition of the original, which gave the Air Force the excuse to shutter Project Blue Book back in 1969.
So Kevin wrote, in a post on his “A Different Perspective” blog, “This sort of dancing around the point is, of course, exactly what I thought would happen because we have seen this all before. In 1969, the Condon Committee, the study commissioned by the USAF at the University of Colorado, didn’t find any evidence of alien visitation either. The conclusions at the end of that ‘scientific’ study was that the Air Force had done a good job of investigation, nothing could be learned by further investigation, and there were no national security aspects to the UFO/UAP sightings.”
Not quite, Kevin. It’s clear the report doesn’t dispute the possibility of an extraterrestrial origin, only that the theory hasn’t been proven. It concedes that the most significant sightings simply cannot be explained by known objects or phenomena. That means there’s still a mystery to be explored, and evidence to be gathered. That is a distinct difference, and it gives fuel to demands that scientists make a more concerted effort to figure out what’s going on.
In other words, consider that report a beginning and not an end.
So an AP story on the upcoming report includes this telltale sentence: “The expected public release of an unclassified version of the report this month will amount to a status report, not the final word, according to one official.”
And that’s more or less what I expected, which is why I call this commentary, “Condon 1.5.” It doesn’t disclose that UFOs are real and extraterrestrial and fulfill the hopes and dreams of disclosure advocates, but, assuming the news reports are all or mostly accurate, it concedes the first part. UFOs are real. UFOs remain unexplained.
In short, perhaps the work has only just begun, that the authorities are still looking into the situation and will release an updated report at some future time. Once the actual unclassified portion is made public, no doubt members of Congress, scientists and, of course, Ufologists, will have something more to say about where we go from here.
It will also be interesting to see whether officials from other countries will have anything to say on the subject. So far, recent comments have largely been confirmed to present and former U.S. officials. Whether Democrat or Republican, their conclusions have been remarkably similar, that the UFO phenomenon needs to be taken seriously and investigated.
In most cases, the comments stop short of the ET threshold. The Pentagon report reportedly claims there’s no evidence to prove an offworld origin, but it would be curious to see what sort of proof is required. It would not be the extraordinary performance of those UAPs, since that would be circumstantial, and that is clearly not sufficient.
But what constitutes proof? What would the Pentagon UAP Task Force require? A physical sample of an interstellar spaceship, a captured alien? Does the alleged wreckage from Roswell qualify, if it exists? The report, as I said, doesn’t appear to recognize UFO cases beyond the limited boundaries of those military sightings.
In short, this story is still being written, and if it doesn’t mostly vanish in the morass of confused and contradictory stories that qualify as news these days, there may be a future update. Maybe. Condon 2.0? No, Kevin Randle, not quite.
