Getting a Handle on Government Secrecy
By Gene Steinberg

If you take what’s happening these days at face value, it does appear that top secret information from the U.S. government is leaking like a sieve. Such whistleblowers -- some call them criminals -- as Edward Snowdon, and sites such as WikiLeaks, pride themselves at revealing the secret information that’s being kept from us for reasons that are legitimate or otherwise.

In light of Snowdon’s recent revelations, we know for certain that the metadata of one’s phone calls in the U.S., which include the numbers called, the time of the call, and sometimes the locations, are being stored in that great NSA datacenter somewhere or other.

Even email and the logs of your online visits are being captured, though it supposedly cannot happen without a secret court proceeding. The same is true if the authorities want to actually wiretap a phone call. But if you believe that, I have a certain bridge in Brooklyn, NY for sale at a really good price.

The point is that “they” are very likely watching you. But it doesn’t mean that you have no recourse. Email can be encrypted via a scheme known as PGP (for Pretty Good Privacy). Such search engines as DuckDuckGo.com will allow you to look for information online anonymously, though I presume they would have to respond to a court summons.

You might even consider something old fashioned, such as regular physical mail via the postal service. Sure, they can open up your letters at the processing center, your local post office, or even direct from your mailbox. But it requires far more manual labor than just grabbing data consisting of ones and zeros from a network backbone. So unless you are specifically targeted, you might actually be able to escape surveillance.

But nothing I’m saying here should come as a surprise. It’s all out there, and you can take steps that will keep you reasonably safe from prying eyes, except for the surveillance cameras at the local convenience store and other retailers, of course. By the same token, the things governments do are usually being exposed by people who don’t approve of the methods.

So the real question is: Can governments in the 21st century keep secrets from their citizens? I suppose they can in third world countries, or anywhere when a monolithic government authority exerts control. But even there, the populace somehow manage to get online, and harness the amazing power of social networks such as Twitter and Facebook to express their disapproval. Once the genie is out of the bottle, it’s impossible to shut things down.

So it seems that even secrets that impact a nation’s security will somehow be disclosed by someone, somewhere, who opposes the secrecy. It is certainly easier in a so-called democracy such as the U.S. and the U.K, but it’s not impossible elsewhere.

Just imagine, therefore, that, in the late 1940s, evidence of something that could seriously change our history is discovered, and I’m referring to possible visitations of Earth by beings from another planet. Take it a step further: A possible alien spaceship has crashed, and the wreckage, perhaps the bodies of the crew, has been recovered and transported to one or more secret government installations for examination. Perhaps similar incidents have occurred around the world.

Consider that this evidence has been in the possession of one or more Earth governments for over six decades. Over the years, tens of thousands of individuals, from the government, military, and even private industry, have been privy to at least a portion of the evidence. They’d no doubt operate under deep cover, with carefully crafted “need to know” directives designed to prevent unauthorized disclosure.

All sorts of schemes may have been devised to keep such secrets, such as funneling money from so-called “Black Projects” for this ongoing research to private industry. It doesn’t have to involve any single transaction. Money can be diverted from perfectly ordinary projects. Perhaps there’s a cost overrun, or the need to hire some additional employees to manage things. If organized crime can launder money usually without getting caught, you can well believe that governments, flush with trillions of dollars of cash, can figure out ways to allocate a few billion here and there to manage the operations of the various agencies and private corporations charged with maintaining the secret.

It all makes perfect sense.

But it also makes sense that someone, somewhere, will object to the edict to keep the secret of the UFOs, and arrange to reveal that secret somehow. Maybe they won’t put up a blog post on that discovery. Perhaps a friend, family member, or some third party will be granted access to the information, so as not to point to the actual whistleblower. The truth is out there.

Sure, I suppose that those in the know are under constant surveillance, but what about those who provide that surveillance? Even if there are dire consequences for blowing the whistle, such as being tortured or terminated with extreme prejudice, some people who want to stand up to “the man” or “the woman” and reveal the truth. Somehow, somewhere, the facts would emerge, and the secret will no longer be a secret.

I realize there may be a thousand and one reasons why such disclosures haven’t occurred. Yes, we’ve had a few possible bread crumbs, but it’s not as if the sources of that information have been shown to be credible. Or maybe, whenever something too close to this truth is revealed, that truth is overwhelmed by so much false information, or disinformation, that the core evidence is buried.

For 66 years?

The ability to keep such a secret, however, implies a level of competence that is, itself, simply not credible. Somewhere, somehow, the facts will emerge, or our governments are far more competent than we have any reason to believe.

Consider the U.S. government, for example. Look at the recent problems with the IRS or the Benghazi affair. With the latter, even those who don’t believe in coverups do accept the fact that there were systemic failures, examples of outright incompetence, that allowed four people to die. What about the warning signs ahead of 9/11? Whether the government failed to connect the dots due to incompetence, or, as some conspiracy theories believe, allowed it to happen, there’s plenty of evidence of frighteningly incompetent behavior.

Except for those who possess the UFO secret. Does that make sense to you? If nothing else, it is a head scratcher.
