Can You Believe History?
By Gene Steinberg

I normally don’t pay a whole lot of attention to public relations announcements. They are intended mainly to advance an idea, or promote a product or service. Thus, they will inevitably contain claims that are exaggerated or downright false.

But when something is published in a book about history, you want to believe that it represents the truth, particularly if that book is being given – or sold – to students and used as the basis for a school’s curriculum. Of course, the reality is that such textbooks are often distilled from a wide variety of sources, and the contents are approved by editors and publishers based in the requirements set by school boards and other arbiters of the information that’s being presented.

But how much of that information is accurate? How much of it represents someone’s agenda?

As you might realize if you spend any time at all watching cable news, particularly here in the U.S., what passes for news is very often little more than someone’s opinion or a spin on a particular report. So the people who watch these shows may come away with very different impressions of current events.

Some may believe, and this may seem outrageous to most of you, that President Barack Obama is an evil foreign intruder from Kenya, someone not really qualified for the office he holds, who is, variously, a fascist, a communist, or a criminal who holds the U.S. Constitution in contempt. Others believe he is, as his birth certificate indicates, a man born in 1961 in Hawaii, who is a decent enough President, but maybe too forgiving of extremists on the opposite side of the political spectrum.

Obviously both versions – and the many shades between those extremes – cannot possibly be true, but that’s how polarized our society is these days. And, yes, I realize I am comparing a set of generally accepted facts with what appears to be an absurd flight of fancy, but these are strange days indeed.

The real question is whether we can believe even our recent history, particularly if it involves events that occurred before we were born. That takes us to a promotional sheet about author Nick Redfern’s latest book, “Secret History: Conspiracies from Ancient Aliens to the New World Order.” The first two sentences say it all: “History is written by the winners – and the powerful – but how much of it is fiction? And who is really in control today?”

The book presents intriguing evidence that a number of significant events throughout history may not have occurred quite the way we have been taught. Consider the Watergate scandal that brought down a sitting U.S. President. What started out as what was referred to as a “third-rate burglary,” became a major event, in part, because of the groundbreaking investigative reporting from Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, who recounted much of their work in a best-selling book, “All the President’s Men.”

The two authors claimed to have received key leads in unraveling the Watergate conspiracy from a secret source that they referred to as “Deep Throat.” In the movie version, Deep Throat was portrayed by character actor Hal Holbrook, and his real identity was later revealed to be Mark Felt, a former Associate Director of the FBI. His name was disclosed shortly before his death in 2008. But when those reports finally surfaced, it was not as if Felt could be interviewed to deliver first-hand memories of his reasons to spill the beans about government treachery to the press. He was already suffering from the effects of dementia and was unable to offer any further insights.

But Redfern suggests another possibility, that the name Deep Throat may have actually represented several sources of Watergate secrets, but it was all pinned on Felt to honor him for his help, and to close off any speculation about any other informants.

And so it goes.

Through over 400 pages, Redfern carefully crafts compelling pictures that many historical events may not have played out quite as we believe. Whether it’s our interactions with god-like beings in ancient times, to possible UFO crashes, assassinations of political leaders and famous figures from the world of entertainment, the truth may have been hidden, or distorted, by the powers that be.

Sometimes critical facts may be altered, or concealed, for expediency by politicians to protect the public and possibly prevent panic. So if a lone crazed gunman killed President Kennedy, as claimed, the story must end there, because there’s nothing else to investigate, and you can chalk it up to an unfortunate tragedy. Take the experience as a warning that the Secret Service must become more vigilant in protecting those in their charge.

But from almost the very first day, independent investigators unearthed contradictions, evidence that indicated that perhaps things were not as they appeared to be. The people blamed by conspiracy theorists for the Kennedy assassination cover a wide range, including organized crime, the CIA and perhaps his successor, President Lyndon Johnson. Even if Lee Harvey Oswald was guilty, perhaps he had help, or maybe he was set up as a patsy to conceal the presence of several snipers who actually did the deed.

Roswell, NM? Was it just a balloon, as the Air Force maintains, or some sort of secret experiment that went awry? Is it possible the U.S. government was actually testing aircraft acquired from the remnants of Nazi science when one of those airplanes crashed? Wouldn’t they want to hide the truth from the Russians in the early days of the Cold War? But what if the claim that a flying saucer crashed was, itself, a cover story to spook Russian spies who might have been seeking the secrets of American post-war technology?

Or was Roswell, as many in the UFO field believe, indeed the crash of a spaceship from parts unknown?

As you see, there is often no single interpretation for key events in our past, and even agreeing on what happened yesterday somewhere on the planet may be extremely difficult, if not impossible.

How can you believe anything at all if seemingly rational people cannot come together on a basic set of facts? Yes, perhaps we simply do our best given the limits of human perception, but quite often there is little agreement whatever, so we are left with widely divergent versions.

Is there no one reality, or are there many realities, each diverging from the other to a lesser or greater degree? Can we depend on anything as true, or is everything we perceive a self-generated or externally-generated illusion?
