UFOs and Endless Possibilities Explored on The Paracast

Special Announcement: The Paracast is heard Sundays from 2:00 AM until 5:00 AM Central Time on the GCN Radio Network and affiliates around the USA, and online across the globe via download and on-demand streaming.

Why It's Important for You to Donate to The Paracast: Although ads help cover a small part of our expenses, the income they produce is never enough to pay your humble hosts decent wages. Also, we do not receive any revenue from the ads placed on the show by our network or local stations. So we hope you're able to help fill the gap, if you can, to help us cover increasing server costs and other expenses -- or perhaps provide a little extra cash for lunch and utility bills. No contribution is too small (or too large :). It’s easy to send a donation. We have a Donate link on our home page, below the logo and audio player. There's also a Donate link on our forums, at the bottom of the sidebar on the right. Or just send your PayPal donation direct to sales (at) theparacast (dot) com. And if you’ve had a problem getting to our Donate screen, please try again. We just fixed a serious PayPal access problem, and it should work properly now.

Attention U.S. Listeners: Help Us Bring The Paracast to Your City! In the summer of 2010, The Paracast joined the GCN radio network. This represented a huge step in bringing our show to a larger, mainstream audience. But we need your help to add additional affiliates to our growing network. Please ask one of your local talk stations if they are interested in carrying The Paracast. Feel free to contact us directly with the names of programming people we might be able to contact on your behalf. We can't do this alone, and if you succeed in convincing your local station to carry the show, we'll reward you with one of our special T-shirts, and other goodies. With your help, The Paracast can grow into one of the most popular paranormal shows on the planet!

It’s Too Early to Identify UFOs Are Extraterrestrial
By Gene Steinberg

Back in the 1950s, those who became interested in flying saucers usually came to one conclusion about what it was all about. But, as most of you know, I later came to a conclusion of my own, that other possibilities ought to be given far more serious consideration.

First and foremost, it was and is, to this day, the prevailing opinion that UFOs are extraterrestrial. The theory is based on the fact that no Earthly power can possibly possess aircraft that can do the amazing things UFOs can do. Since they aren’t ours, they must belong to some advanced race, and therefore must come from outer space. That’s the beginning and end of it, except for some who believe they have been contacted by ET, and can tell you all the nasty details, and, with abductions, the details can get real nasty.

By assuming an ET origin as fact, UFO investigators go off into speculation about why they are here, and whether they are friendly or evil. Certainly there are enough science fiction films and novels around to cover all the bases. But since ET has yet to show overt examples of hostility, we just assume they just don’t care or have some sort of friendly motivation. Or maybe they have demonstrated evil intent.

After all, how do we explain abductions, assuming abductions even have anything to do with the UFO mystery? On the surface, it appears they do, but some suggest there is a far more intricate process underway, that much of what is experienced is happening in the experiencer’s mind, even if it’s still due to some external force.

But what if UFO abductions were actually what they seem to be, an effort by extraterrestrial intelligences to kidnap portions of our population to perform sometimes painful medical tests, or perhaps create a hybrid race? How would that demonstrate anything but hostility? In our society, kidnapping is a serious crime. Such constraints may not apply in an alien society, but interference of this sort, even for possibly benevolent reasons, can be nothing if not hostile.

There are also some reports, years ago, of fighter planes firing on UFOs, and a few reports of the UFOs possibly firing back. But that would surely be an act self-defense on the part of our visitors, not an indication of outright hostility.

Besides, if ET had hostile intent, why not just land and take us over? It’s not as if we have a proper defense against a race of highly advanced beings. Indeed, they might have weapons of mass destruction that would render our nuclear warheads inoperative with little effort. We might as well fight back with pitchforks and bows and arrows.

So maybe our visitors don’t wish us ill. Perhaps the abduction scenario is a totally separate phenomenon that we do not understand. Or perhaps ET’s ethics are totally alien to us, alien logic as it were, and thus they may believe they are actually helping us by subjecting us to painful experiments with primitive instruments.

Certainly, believing UFOs to be extraterrestrial would seem to be just logical. After all, we are discovering more and more evidence of possibly Earth-type -- class M, goldilocks or whatever -- planets orbiting nearby star systems. That being the case, it’s very possible life as well know it, or intelligent life at any rate, spawned on some of those planets. Assuming some of those races are more advanced than we are, it makes perfect sense to suggest that they discovered an efficient propulsion system to explore the galaxy. After all, they do on “Star Trek,” right? Indeed, there is even talk that we might be working on our own potential solution to warp drive.

At the same time, we don’t necessarily see alien craft orbiting around our planet, or even the Moon or Mars for that matter, even though we’ve extensively surveyed those worlds with space probes and don’t forget the Apollo astronauts and their limited lunar visits.

Don’t forget that UFOs are always seen on Earth, except for a few possibly controversial astronaut sightings of strange objects. Everything seems to indicate that we’re dealing with a terrestrial phenomenon, although that doesn’t mean it’s not about solid craft that can engage in incredible pinpoint maneuvers seemingly in violation of the constraints of gravity.

But the argument about the origin of UFOs often amounts to saying “what else can they be but extraterrestrial?” That argument doesn’t wash. You don’t assume a theory only because you haven’t yet been able to find an provable alternative. It’s not as if the ET theory can be proven either. It’s all just a theory, and should be given its due, but the process of elimination hasn’t left it as the only answer. There may, indeed, be multiple solutions to the enigma. It’s not as if all UFOs look and behave in the same ways.

Some suggest UFOs are, in fact, time travelers from our own future. Maybe they are here to change conditions that negatively impacted the Earth of, say, the 25th century. Or perhaps they are just hanging out, enjoying a joke at our expense, though you wonder how even the most subtle act might change someone’s life, and have an unknown impact on our future existence. Or maybe it is all part of destiny, our future lives move along with a preordained outcome.

Others talk of UFOs from parallel worlds, arriving here by entering wormholes or portals that allow them to easily transport themselves from one existence or reality to another. In the UFO research community, it’s all about so-called window areas, places that seem to attract a high level of strange events. Are these the wormholes that we can, under certain circumstances, accidentally enter, never to return?

Or maybe UFOs are all about our collective unconscious, events generated on a subconscious level that may have an external reality -- such as leaving trace evidence or being photographed -- but are not real in the sense that we understand real.

Rather than rate the possibilities, and I’ve just covered the surface here, it’s clear to me that the UFO mystery is a long way from being explained, let alone understood. Further, the explanation may not necessarily be as basic as evidence of the presence of explorers from other words.

Anyone who actually bothers to make a genuine and constructive effort deserves at least a like ( or two ). But let me state ( or restate ) that while I agree that claims about the the ultimate spacetime coordinates for the origin of UFOs cannot be verified by anyone we know, doesn't mean the ETH isn't the most reasonable probability. This conclusion is based on the premise that ufology is primarily concerned with objects resembling craft that cannot be explained as either natural or manmade. Like Stanton Friedman says, he doesn't care about the rest. Other more ethereal phenomena ( e.g. UAPs ) are another matter altogether. Translucent flitting rods, vague lights in the distance, angelic or demonic apparitions, St. Elmo's Fire, etc. are only of peripheral relevance. Perhaps those may have more terrestrial origins, but they aren't UFOs so they don't apply to any Earth based hypothesis for UFOs either. We should also be reminded that according to more than one author, UFOs have been tracked in space by Space Command. Most people see them near the Earth because this is the only place most people can see them.

Space-based UFOs remain controversial and disputed. And remember UFO means unidentified. It doesn't describe what they are. We just assume it's ET, and I don't dismiss the possibility. But…

I suppose the whole field could be described as controversial, so that doesn't really say anything, and in the context of the word UFO, the word "unidentified" means much more than a simplistic dictionary definition. Of course you already know all this ... Nevertheless, I would agree that it is not fair minded to close the door on other possibilities without sufficient evidence to do so. Other possibilities deserve to be considered to the extent that we can demonstrate and/or extrapolate a reasonable case for them.
