Considering An Ongoing Conspiracy
By Gene Steinberg

A number of years ago, a friend and I attended a lecture featuring a former member of the New York State Assembly that helped advance one of the most popular conspiracy theories of our time, that President John F. Kennedy was not assassinated, as claimed, by a crazed lone assassin. The lecturer, Mark Lane, made a compelling case that the alleged assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, may have been a patsy or was perhaps otherwise involved in this crime, but could not have been the shooter, or at least not the lone shooter.

Lane’s interest in the case began early on. Just four weeks after the JFK assassination, Lane wrote an article for National Guardian, a progressive publication, expressing his deep concerns over some of the key claims made by officials about the case. I attended several more of Lane’s lectures; once, in fact, accompanied by Jim Moseley, the late court jester of the UFO field.

During those lectures, Lane would spend a lot of time explaining why Oswald’s rifle was just too flawed to have hit the target accurately in just a few seconds. But that was just a small part of the evidence that he assembled and later published in his best selling book, “Rush to Judgement.”

The Warren Commission report said otherwise. It was all about Oswald, a frustrated ex-Marine who actually defected to the Soviet Union for several years. For most people, the report, like the Condon Report about UFOs some years later, essentially put the rest concerns that this history-altering tragedy was anything but the result of the evil acts of a lone gunman.

That did not satisfy the skeptics, however, and they had one notable victory. A Congressional committee, the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on Assassination, was formed in 1976 to probe the deaths of JFK and Martin Luther King, Jr., along with the shooting of Governor George Wallace of Alabama. The committee’s report, issued in 1978, concluded that JFK’s death was the result of a conspiracy, but declined to identify any possible culprits.

That report should have been sufficient to goad the authorities into action, only it never happened. Unlike today’s 24/7 news cycle, the story was mostly buried and largely forgotten, except for people who continue to examine the case, such as our guest on this week’s episode of The Paracast, parapolitics author Kenn Thomas.

But it’s a story that will never die. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination, it’s possible evidence that his been sealed since 1963 might finally come to light. Meantime, there’s a recent published report quoting Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., RFK’s son, as saying that his father never believed the Warren Commission report about a lone perpetrator causing his brother’s death.

I suppose one can wonder about yet another conspiracy theory, that RFK was killed because of the possibility that he was about to blow the whistle on his brother’s murder. The RFK assassination is also a ripe subject for speculation that some sort of conspiracy was involved.

But how are political assassinations possibly related to UFOs and the paranormal? Well, Thomas and others tell the curious tale of one Fred Lee Crisman, a key figure in the controversial Maury Island UFO sighting in 1947. The sighting occurred just three days before Kenneth Arnold’s legendary sighting of nine crescent-shaped objects, on June 24, which fueled modern interest in the mystery.

Indeed, Arnold was dispatched by publisher/editor Ray Palmer to investigate Maury Island. The story filled the first part of a book Arnold wrote with Palmer, “The Coming of the Saucers.”

As to Crisman, he was a co-worker of one of the Maury Island witnesses, Harold A. Dahl, but he was also well known to Palmer, because he was a frequent letter writer to “Amazing Stories” magazine, which Palmer edited, in which he wrote about encounters with those subterranean creatures known as deros and teros. In other words, Crisman was connected to the Shaver Mystery.

But it gets more convoluted than that. Crisman was also said to be identified as one of the three hobos seen on the grassy knoll on the day of the Kennedy assassination. Supposedly Oliver Stone investigated Crisman’s involvement in the case when he did the research for his movie, “JFK,” which focused on the probe into the case by New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison.

In the end, Crisman was not officially identified as a person of interest. Garrison charged businessman Clay Shaw for his alleged involvement in the case, but he was acquitted. The story sort of ends there, except, of course, for the ongoing interest by untold numbers of curious people, such as your humble author.

Certainly, the revelation about Robert F. Kennedy’s skepticism of the Warren Commission report is yet another factor that is bound to raise curiosity as we approach the case’s 50th anniversary. But that doesn’t mean there will ever be a solution.

Even if some of the possible perpetrators are still alive, they’d be quite old. The evidence trail, except for the sealed records, is extremely cold, and memories of the tragedy would be rapidly fading. Imagine, for example, trying to unearth possible eyewitness testimony about the Roswell crash after all these years.

At least with the JFK affair, there is some slight hope that the truth is out there, and that, given access to all the evidence, forensic experts will be able to get a clear picture of what really happened, using today’s technology. And don’t forget that DNA evidence didn’t exist in the 1960s.

Would any of that make a difference, or are there agencies out there that would prefer that the JFK assassination remain a mystery without a final resolution?ome to grips with what’s really going on. future.

Nice post Gene, I'd like to mention that another one of the "hobos" was Charles Voyde Harrelson, the son of actor Woody Harrelson who would later die in prison serving a double life sentence for the assassination of a federal judge although I've never heard it being connected up jfk

... But how are political assassinations possibly related to UFOs and the paranormal? ...

Back when I first started looking at the JFK assassination I was connecting the dots ... JFK starts the space race ... his own top scientists say there is no way it can be done ... but engineers allege that blueprints suddenly appear on their desks from ARPA ( DARPA ) a defense research agency allegedly connected to research on crashed UFOs ... JFK's deep involvement with the space program leads him to discover the UFO connection and what's really going on ... but he holds that card close to his chest as insurance ... and wants to get the Russians involved .... but then the connections to the secret start to get picked off ... Journalist Dorothy Kilgallen says she has top insider evidence on UFOs but dies a very mysterious death before she can publish ... her coincidentally ( or otherwise ) her friend Marilyn Monroe, who has intimate ties with JFK also dies a quasi-mysterious death ... JFK dies next ... Oswald claims to be a patsy ... then he's also killed ... slide in the strange death James Forrestal and the recently discovered memo that JFK had asked NASA to look into the UFO issue and it's hard not to imagine some really great ... what shall we call it ... docufiction ... ?
