This Week's Episode: Here is the new proof of a possible nuclear catastrophe on Mars! In an epic story of discovery, strong evidence is presented in John Brandenburg's latest book, "Death on Mars: The Discovery of a Planetary Nuclear Massacre," for a dead Martian civilization and the shocking reason for its demise: an ancient planetary-scale nuclear massacre leaving isotopic traces of vast explosions that endure to our present age. According to Dr. Brandenburg, we must immediately send astronauts to Mars to maximize our knowledge of what happened there, and learn how to avoid Mars’ fate. Dr. Brandenburg is a veteran plasma physicist and the Senior Propulsion Scientist at Orbital Technologies Corporation in Madison, Wisconsin..

The Media and the Message
By Gene Steinberg

It has long been known that the mainstream press is really not interested in treating the subject of UFOs seriously. When there is coverage of a sighting, it may be treated as a cute or curious human interest story, and the most sensational aspects of the event will be treated with derision.

When it comes to a public event meant to present information on the subject, the least credible among the speakers and the exhibitors will get the most attention. The rest might as well not even exist to the press. Well, not all the press. There are some reporters who take the subject seriously and will give it its due.

Still, I wasn’t surprised at the national coverage I’ve read about the 2015 International UFO Congress. It’s true that such events are not meant as scientific sessions or press conferences. They are designed to present a cross-section of information about unusual events to the general public. The sponsors need to fill seats, so the speaker roster can be a mixed bag of serious, scientific individuals and those who are all or mostly entertainment, presenting wild theories with scant evidence to support them.

To its credit, the folks at Open Minds who produce these conferences have made a better effort to separate the wheat from the chaff this year. It’s by no means perfect, but there are more compelling speakers on hand that include Zuni tribal elder Clifford Mahooty, our own Christopher O’Brien, investigative journalist George Knapp, UFO researchers Richard Dolan and Stanton Friedman, along with others you’ve heard on The Paracast over the years.

The list of speakers even included the one and only Bob Lazar, who made a series of controversial claims about UFOs at the Area 51 test facility in Nevada.

So the event was covered by some media outlets, including the Arizona Republic, a Gannett newspaper for which my son and I used to write some years back. The report was reprinted in the country’s second largest daily newspaper, USA Today, also published by Gannett, meaning it reached an estimated audience of several million readers.

That’s a good thing. Not so good was the lede that gave you a pretty good indication of the somewhat sarcastic flavor of the story:

“The government's massive coverup of the existence of extraterrestrial life can be vexing to believers, but once a year dozens have the opportunity to gather near a Phoenix-area resort where they can discuss the ‘cosmic Watergate’ in peace.

“That time arrived with little fanfare Wednesday morning with the opening of the International UFO Congress and, as always, an opportunity for believers to meet with a hypnotherapist to recount their experiences of alien abduction and rehabilitation.”

To the reporter who wrote those words, it wasn’t about presenting compelling evidence of unusual sightings of seemingly solid aircraft making incredible maneuvers that have been reported for ages by credible observers. It was mostly about UFO abductees coming together to confront their experiences and receive therapy.

I hope you see the disconnect.

True, UFO abductions are vexing and often frightening events. Investigators and therapists need to get to the bottom of this mystery and see what’s really going on. But it’s fair to say that abductions form only a small portion of the overall mystery. To the media, however, untutored on what’s really going on in the field, only the most sensational aspects of the subject are worthy of coverage.

Sure the story did include a couple of graphs about Stanton Friedman, but it wasn’t made clear that his evidence covered a whole lot more than UFO abductions. The reporter also mistakenly assumed that those infamous Project Blue Book documents were only recently declassified, even though they’ve been online for years. For that, I have to blame John Greenewald of The Black Vault for making a mess of the situation even if his intentions were honorable.

This sort of coverage is a key reason why The Paracast has been at loggerheads with Stephen Bassett’s approach to presenting special events about UFOs and disclosure. He has made it quite clear that he doesn’t care about vetting the speakers, and so there’s always a mixture of the serious and the outrageous.

The long and short of it is that nothing has changed. The media will continue to regard people interested in UFOs as mostly eccentrics, and that even applies to John Podesta, the political operative who recently left a post with the Obama administration and is expected to take on key campaign chores for Hilary Clinton’s campaign for President. He may regret that he wasn’t able to unearth any secret information about UFOs during his most recent government stint, but few care outside of the field. His long-time interest in the subject isn’t being taken seriously, and it’s highly unlikely Podesta will show up at a UFO convention to present his viewpoints. He knows that would create a circus atmosphere and not much else even before you consider the potential damage to Clinton’s campaign.

When UFOs aren’t receiving slanted coverage by the media, there are always those UFO-oriented reality TV shows, and that includes those that focus on ancient astronauts. The key problem is that the cable TV networks and entertainment companies that produce such fare regard them as filler between the ads. But that’s true for pretty much all TV programming except for shows presented on the ad-free premium cable networks.

It also means that events may be exaggerated, and visuals faked in order to keep you entertained for those 43 minutes or so, all along hoping you won’t fast forward through the ads. The people who produce and host such shows may assure you of their good intentions, but good intentions do not necessarily make a product that the network regards as commercially viable.

So, yes, there appears to be plenty of interest in UFOs and other offbeat subjects, which is why some of these shows remain on the air. You will also see some really compelling evidence from time to time, with guests who know their stuff and have a lot of solid information to offer. But they are not an educational shows by any means. That unfortunate situation is not expected to change.
