This Week's Episode: Gene and special guest cohost Mark Jackson present long time Fortean researcher Stan Gordon, who returns with more amazing reports detailing sightings of UFOs and strange creatures in and around Pennsylvania. Are such phenomena related in some way? What about reports of sudden appearances and disappearances and does such behavior provide the clue to the solution to these mysteries? Stan has been researching UFO sightings, Bigfoot encounters, and other mysterious events in Pennsylvania since 1959. Since then, he has been involved with the investigation of thousands of unusual incidents. He is the primary investigator of the 1965 UFO crash incident that occurred near Kecksburg, PA.

After The Paracast -- Available exclusively for Paracast+ subscribers on February 17: In which Gene and Randall briefly discuss UFO researchers who essentially repeat the same “script” during radio and TV appearances. The discussion moves to alleged ET technology, as Gene speculates on the possibility of a civilization using spaceships originally built by an extinct race, which they can maintain but not replace. There is also talk about life in space, artificial intelligence and the possible motives of alien visitors. Gene briefly recounts a meeting he arranged nearly 40 years ago between Dr. J. Allen Hynek and best-selling author Charles Berlitz.

Those Inscrutable Aliens
By Gene Steinberg

If UFOs come from outer space, piloted by an intelligent race, it’s fair to speculate about why they’re here. There are certainly lots of theories, but pitting one against another is assuredly not an easy process.

If you believe some of those so-called UFO contactees, our visitors are here to help us rather than to harm us. They have taken a personal interest in the affairs of humans, and only wish us to give up our endless “tribal conflicts,” and follow the path of peace and maybe join the Galactic Brotherhood.

I hesitate to call it a Federation.

While those sentiments appear to come from different entities, originating from different planets, there is little variation in the basic “script.”

It is surely encouraging to think of ET as having our best interests in mind, but it’s not as if they are successful in fulfilling their prime directive or whatever governs their conduct. Most or all of the contactees are relative unknowns, people whose lives were quite ordinary until they happened to meet up with “them.”

Some of these people will go on to write books, magazine articles and even go on lecture tours to evangelize ET’s message. On the surface, such behavior may be akin to a religious revelation, except that the deities with whom they are in contact claim to be physical beings from another planet.

While it’s true that a small number of contactees may achieve their 15 minutes of fame, their influence is limited to, at best, a small number of followers.

Now if ET really wanted to convince Earthlings that they were serious, if they felt they could influence us by dint of their presence, why not contact someone who can make a difference?

So if a high government official, perhaps someone in elective office, came forth with word of such a contact, wouldn’t they have the ability to influence millions of people with a single statement?

Well, perhaps, assuming they could actually prove what happened to them. Just saying so may not have much impact, except, perhaps, to convince most people that these individuals needed to visit a mental health professional to deal with their delusions.

Even if the contactee was the leader of a nation, such as the President of the United States, a large portion of the population still wouldn’t believe them. If ET was standing next to the President during an oval office event, its presence would be dismissed as someone in weird makeup. Indeed, since some Space Brothers appear to be quite human, their presence wouldn’t reveal their non-terrestrial origins.

If ET is serious, why not stage a worldwide demonstration of their existence that nobody can dispute? A mass landing perhaps, or by taking over the Internet and radio and TV broadcasts to make a statement that will be heard by the residents of each country in their native language. It’s not as if the concept is original.

While I understand the need to avoid possible panic, these beings, if they exist, strike me as feckless.

If they wanted to make a difference in eliminating humanity’s warlike tendencies, there is surely a solution between the two extremes of contacting someone nobody knows and contacting a world leader. ET has to be smart enough to deliver its message without causing havoc.

If that was their motive of course.

Again, I’m assuming for the sake of argument that UFOs are of alien origin, flying machines developed by an advanced race from somewhere out there. If they came here to help us, I’m sure they can find an effective method to accomplish their mission.

On the other hand, we may all be victims of a gigantic psychological experiment. In other words, ET is leading us on to see how things turn out, or to have a few guffaws at our expense. But that assumes they have a sense of humor that we can actually understand and perhaps relate to.

You can certainly find lots of answers other than the presence of benevolent beings who only care about our best interests.

Now if ET was evil, and wanted to take us over without actually firing a shot, perhaps the process could be done gradually. Create a band of followers who, over the decades, would spread their faux peaceful message to lull us into a sense of security.

While people are regarding contactees as simple eccentrics, perhaps they are drawing attention away from the real threat. So ET places their own people, a hybrid race, or groups of followers, in positions of influence.

Since this is a long-range plan, the takeover process will be gradual. One day we will awaken to find ourselves under their domination. We might not even notice it at first. We will slowly become accustomed to a new way of life.

Or maybe not.

You see, we view possible alien motivations based on our own experiences, expectations and no doubt what we’ve watched in sci-fi movies and TV.

So in the 1996 popcorn thriller, “Independence Day,” the insectoid alien invaders were looking to exterminate humans, and ravage Earth’s natural resources before moving on.

Well, at least they had a reason. In films based on H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds,” we never do learn why the aliens are here, other than to destroy us. But they aren’t very smart despite their advanced technology, because they fail to take precautions against Earth viruses, and thus they soon catch a cold, more or less, and die.

As I said, dumb!

At least the original novel was more specific about why the aliens want to conquer us, as Wells writes that they “regarded this earth with envious eyes.” Maybe because they destroyed the environment of their home planet? That may indeed frame the reasons why the aliens in “Independence Day” came here. To be sure, that movie borrows from “War of the Worlds” in yet another way. ET is finally defeated by giving them a cold, only in this case it’s a computer virus.

I never did understand, though, how Jeff Goldblum’s character figured out how to penetrate an alien operating system and take it over with malware. This film was produced before our own wireless technologies, particularly Wi-Fi, became ubiquitous.

In our real world, however, alien beings may have alien motivations for being here, if they are here. In other words, we may never know why they came until they get around to telling us. And, no, not by landing in the California desert or channeling peaceful nothings to some unsuspecting mediums.
