Collecting UFO Sightings Does -- What?
By Gene Steinberg

In last week’s column, I made it quite clear that the UFOs haven’t left us. There are still many thousands of sightings around the world that evidently occur almost every day. Some involve mere blips in the sky, which is essentially what I saw once upon a time. But others are remarkable, frighteningly detailed, indicating the presence of an unknown phenomenon. So it makes perfect sense to collect as many cases as possible, hoping, by sheer numbers, to prove UFOs are real based on the quantity of data.

So over the years various independent researchers and UFO clubs have collected huge numbers of cases, some even involving on-the-scene investigations and interviews of eyewitnesses. In cases where UFOs appeared to have landed, there may even be trace evidence that involves soil samples, not to mention photographs, movies, and what-not.

The amount of data about UFOs around the world cannot be measured, but there are likely millions of documents involved. Some of the reports and evidence date back to the late 1940s and early 50s, and much of it has yet to be digitized, so it remains stored in file cabinets and cartons. Indeed, the vast amount of data assembled over several decades by the long-defunct Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO), one of the most respected UFO research bodies of its time, is still packed away, with little indication that researchers at large will ever get a chance to explore this rich treasure trove of evidence.

But the biggest question of all really has yet to be answered. What do we really know, after all these years, about UFOs?

Well, probably over 90% of reported sightings appear to have conventional causes, such as our own aircraft, sometimes test planes of one sort or another, planets, stars, and all sorts of conventional phenomena. Skeptics will claim that all UFOs could be explained away if we only had enough evidence, but it appears many of the unknown reports are detailed enough to deliver a solution, if a conventional solution exists, and that this outright dismissal is just a flimsy excuse.

When you look at those unknowns, you’ll find reports of craft that appear to be metallic flying objects of many shapes and sizes, performing maneuvers that evince evidence of intelligent control, and capable of being seen on radar and photographed. On some occasions, beings of some sort, often what we call “grays,” are seen in and around those strange airships after a landing. ET sightings may extend to reports of direct physical contact and communication, sometimes with beings that appear totally human, along with possible UFO abductions.

Now when it comes to the contact claims, many of the well-known reports are clearly bogus. Sometimes the alleged witness may be making up a story with the hope of writing a best-seller, or making money from the lecture circuit. But it’s also true that some people have had undeniably weird and sometimes frightening encounters. That takes us back to those UFO abductions.

Although we don’t hear of many abductions these days, it’s hard to deny the experience outright. Yes, there may be conventional explanations, and you can’t dismiss the possibility that there has been some sort of interaction with a strange being of one sort or another. Maybe they are from other planets, maybe they are manifestations of a collective unconscious, maybe they are illusions. It’s really hard to tell.

But one thing is certain, and that is that little of the accumulated evidence has pointed us towards a provable solution to the UFO enigma. There are also complications, such as strange creatures seen in the vicinity of UFO sightings, perhaps Bigfoot. The sudden disappearance of a UFO, or observing such craft enter a vortex, makes you wonder if we may have to expand our concept of reality to truly understand what’s actually going on.

Now I have to tell you, gentle reader, that I could have written these words years ago and, in fact, I have published similar commentaries over the years. You see, there has been precious little progress in trying to understand what’s behind the UFO mystery. You can’t just say it’s ET, and wait -- or hope -- that the government will disclose the secret and get on with your business. That has taken us nowhere.

And don’t assume that there’s any possibility of success if you decide to send a petition for disclosure to the government of any particular country. As we learned when that was done in the U.S. not so long ago, the best you can hope for is a dismissive statement from some low-level government bureaucrat. If there’s a secret, it’s not as if a few thousand people will be able to convince the authorities to reveal it. It would probably take the collective effort of millions of citizens, and even then there would be no guarantee that the effort would be successful. After all, how can we possibly know what the governments of Earth possess in terms of knowledge about UFOs? They may, in the end, be as mystified as we are, so they prefer to keep whatever evidence they possess under wraps for fear of causing widespread panic.

Besides, people don’t believe governments these days, particularly in advanced countries, so why would we take whatever they say seriously? We don’t believe them when they tell us there’s nothing to the UFO mystery, or at least a large number of people don’t. If they changed their tune, would the skeptics simply laugh, or would they decide there’s a truth out there that we don’t fully understand?

This isn’t to say that civilian UFO researchers don’t have the chops to get to the bottom of the mystery. The issue is whether years and years of collecting sighting reports and some related evidence has really taken us anywhere, and the answer is a resounding no. That there has been a lack of progress is loud and clear, particularly when you compare the theories about the origin of UFOs from the 1950s to the very latest pronouncements on the subject. What will it take to move this study to the next level? Readers -- what do you think?

I don't think the "no" answer is quite so resounding as you propose. The efforts of all those investigators who have gone before and all those organizations who have collected and analyzed them is not without value. As mentioned in another thread recently, Carl Sagan pointed out that when it comes to evidence, it's not just the word of one or two witnesses that counts as extraordinary evidence, but I would submit that Sagan's famous quote would have come across as completely hollow had he first introduced the audience to the hundreds of high quality reports from credible people before telling us that they don't count. But getting these reports is like panning for gold. You've got to sift through tons of material to get a small amount of the good stuff, and it's because of the nearly thankless effort of all the past researchers and people who have taken the time to submit their reports that we have that material. Personally I don't like to their efforts trivialized. If anything we need to support the work of organizations like CUFOS who have made it their priority to archive and catalog as much as they can. If I had the time and money I'd be donating to them ( and the Paracast ) and doing a whole lot more of that work myself.

BTW: There's a guest suggestion. Have you tried to get anyone from CUFOS on?

To answer your last question: What will it take to move this study to the next level? My view is that before we need to reset ufology by firmly establishing its foundations, and to do that we need to establish some really clear and objective guidelines regarding what ufology is and what UFOs are. Why do I think this is so important? Because it gives us an objective framework within ufology in which to place and evaluate the evidence ... and this applies to any evidence, including any new and exciting evidence ( like perhaps something from the SLV Project ). Without a solid framework within the field, we're just headed for more problems and run the risk that the evidence ( either historical or new ) will just get tossed into the pile and become another part of ufology's forgotten history. IMO that would be tragic.
