Hiding in Plain Sight
By Gene Steinberg

Several years ago, I asked one of our Paracast guests about possible government disinformation in the UFO field. He used the phrase “hiding in plain sight” to explain where they might be located.

Of course, it’s easy to speak in clever sound bites, but those four words have loads of meaning that may, in the end, be perfectly accurate. If you go through the modern UFO era, starting in 1947, you’ll find clearcut evidence of government involvement.

Starting with Kenneth Arnold’s 1947 UFO encounter, on June 24th, the world was never the same when it came to the belief that we might have actually been visited by ET. It was a wish that would not die, even though the evidence for such visits remains, to a large extent, compelling but still debatable.

Arnold found himself embroiled in the mystery more closely than he might have wanted when he was asked by Ray Palmer, the legendary UFO figure who co-founded Fate magazine, to investigate a reported crash incident at Maury Island, near Tacoma, Washington. Although he probably kicked himself later, Arnold said yes.

This is a case that has been discussed, dissected, and reassembled over and over again through the years. While most serious UFO researchers regard the Maury Island affair as a hoax, or at the very least a conventional event, Arnold’s efforts to investigate the case had curious overtones that smacked of a pulpy spy novel.

When Arnold first arrived in Tacoma, he attempted to get a hotel room, only to find that none were available; that is, except for one hotel, where they actually had a reservation in his name. In other words, someone knew he was coming, and if the culprit wasn’t Palmer, notorious for peddling questionable theories from time to time, who might it have been? Could the government, in the aftermath of the worldwide publicity over Arnold’s sighting, been watching over him to see what he was up to?

Then there’s the legendary Roswell UFO case that same year. There was an initail flurry of interest when the press reported the crash to involve a genuine flying saucer, before the government reversed itself and said it was just a balloon. The case essentially remained dormant until years later, when Charles Berlitz (a grandson of the original founder of Berlitz Language Schools), Stanton T. Friedman, and Bill Moore wrote “The Roswell Incident.” In retrospect, only Berlitz and Moore got the major credits on the book, although Friedman reportedly did a lot of the leg work.

All of a sudden a new myth arose, that a space ship landed near Roswell, New Mexico, and the wreckage – and alien bodies -- were recovered by the authorities and carted off to some unknown location. Yes, it’s true some of the eyewitness reports dredged up by Berlitz, Friedman, and Moore, seemed compelling. Years later, we featured Dr. Jesse Marcel, Jr., son of a key Roswell witness, who told of handling purported UFO wreckage in his own hands.

Yes, something awfully screwy was going on. Unfortunately, there’s no actual physical evidence to be found, not even a photo. We are left with the testimony of people who attempted to recall events several decades earlier, after going through generations of cultural conditioning about the possible arrival of UFOs, sci-fi films, gray aliens, and lots lots more.

This doesn’t mean something weird didn’t happen at Roswell. It’s the story that will never die, and maybe some super secret government agency has managed a level of security so stringent that nobody has come forth with the real details. Yes, I suppose Philip J. Corso’s controversial book, “The Day After Roswell,” might be a potential smoking gun, but too much of that book remains under dispute.

It’s also possible that the Roswell affair was, in part, staged to conceal evidence of a failed test of a secret military aircraft. Certainly the military officials in the area weren’t let in on the details, since they didn’t have a need to know. The release of two contradictory cover stories, first that it was a flying saucer, and, second, that it was just a balloon, were designed to divert your attention from what really happened.

Years later, you can readily locate reports of all sorts of UFO encounters, some in or around military installations, which may also indicate possible government involvement. To cover up the presence of ET? Or just to make sure our enemies didn’t know that we were really involved in classified tests of military hardware?

Even if military hardware tests are being mistaken for flying saucers, it doesn’t mean there is no real UFO phenomenon afoot, or that our governments don’t know about it. The Roswell crash may have actually involved a real space ship, and there are a host of strange events reported through the years that are not readily explained. But it's very possible that some sightings are, in fact, cover stories to prevent the discovery of the existence of advanced new aircraft of conventional origin. Yes, hiding in plain sight indeed!
