Special Announcement: The Paracast is heard Sundays from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM (Central Time) on the GCN radio network.

There is Still Time For You to Consider a Holiday Donation for The Paracast: Although ads help cover a small part of our expenses, the income they produce is never enough. Also, we do not receive any revenue from the ads placed on the show by our network or local stations. So we hope you're able to help fill the gap if you can to help us cover increasing server costs and other expenses -- or perhaps provide a little extra cash for lunch. No contribution is too small (or too large :). We have a Donate link on our home page, below the logo and audio player. There's also a Donate link on our forums, at the bottom of the sidebar on the right. Or just send your PayPal donation direct to sales (at) theparacast (dot) com.

Attention U.S. Listeners: Help Us Bring The Paracast to Your City! Last summer, The Paracast joined the GCN radio network. This represented a huge step in bringing our show to a larger, mainstream audience. But we need your help to add additional affiliates to our growing network. Please ask one of your local talk stations if they are interested in carrying The Paracast. Feel free to contact us directly with the names of programming people we might be able to contact on your behalf. We can't do this alone, and if you succeed in convincing your local station to carry the show, we'll reward you with one of our special T-shirts, and other goodies. With your help, The Paracast can grow into one of the most popular paranormal shows on the planet!

Have UFOs Returned?
By Gene Steinberg

In our preamble for recent episodes of The Paracast, Chris and I have discussed an apparent increase in UFO sightings in 2011. We focused, in part, on the midwestern portion of the U.S., but that doesn’t mean the flurry of reports are centered in those locales. The January, 2012 issue of the MUFON Journal has a number of reports from around the U.S., such as possible orbs following a woman’s car traveling between Flagstaff and Leupp, AZ, and another sighting involving a “light blue oval sphere” observed in Virginia.

Other cases investigated and published by MUFON in the current issue occurred in Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington State.

All in all, quite a busy year, and sufficient to lead MUFON’s International Director, Clifford Clift, to predict that the organization expects to receive some 6,000 UFO sighting reports in 2012. Unfortunately, Clift is falling into the same trap as other UFO investigators through the years, and that is the brazen belief that you can predict their arrival, so to speak, and the years in which sighting waves or flaps will occur.

Through the years, I’ve read reports that the number of UFO events tend to increase in five year cycles, seven year cycles, and if the timing is off, that they tend to mostly fly across specific locations around the world.

In the never-ending quest to find rhyme and reason to UFO cases, some researchers have talked about UFOs and ley lines, which are, roughly speaking, synonymous with straight lines in the Earth’s tectonic plates, according to one definition. These ley lines are supposedly sources of greater magnetic energy, which somehow attract paranormal events of one sort or another.

Others speculate about “window areas,” dimensional portals or anomalies, where there is supposedly a crack in the fabric of space between here and another reality or dimension. Perhaps these breaks are deliberate, the result of applying an advanced scientific technique. Or perhaps they are accidental, or the result of our tampering with the environment.

Regardless, once the doorways open, creatures and advanced flying machines are able to travel back and forth. So maybe UFOs aren’t visitors from other planets, but from parallel realities, and perhaps the strange creatures that occasionally accompany these sightings come from the same place, wherever that might be.

I suppose if you want to carry this speculation any further, you might also suggest that those dimensional portals are the result of using some sort of “warp drive” that bends space in such a way as to make it possible to travel hundreds or thousands of light years in a matter or seconds, or hours.

On the other hand, it doesn’t so much matter where UFOs come from right now, as to why they are here, and how often they actually appear. Unfortunately, that’s seems difficult or impossible to know, because we are obviously not able to monitor every single foot of the surface of this planet. More to the point, if someone doesn’t look up or around them at the right time, the object that is there will never be seen.

It may even be that so-called UFO flaps are really “publicity flaps,” meaning that once a sighting gets a lot of publicity, people who have not reported their own encounters will speak up. Others will begin to do some sky-watching, and they, too, will see things that they cannot identify. In the end, most of these strange objects turn out to be quite conventional aircraft, planets, and other mundane things. Only a small portion of the total of UFO sightings reported every year remain unidentified when carefully investigated.

The skeptics will suggest that all UFOs would be identified as mistaken conventional objects or phenomena if enough information were available. That conclusion falls down when you examine sightings for which no mundane answer appears to apply, but it’s easy enough, I suppose, to bend evidence of something unknown to conform to your expectations.

Now as to Clifford Clift’s speculation as to how many UFO sightings will be reported to MUFON in 2012, I am sure you sense my skepticism. I think he is wrong, not because I have any inside information to reveal, but because predictions of that sort are seldom confirmed. Just when you think the number of sightings can only grow, the reverse happens. And when you begin to think the UFO mystery is yesterday’s news, they return to confound humankind yet again.
