Special Announcement: The Paracast is heard Sundays from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM (Central Time) on the GCN radio network.

Time is Short! Please Consider a Holiday Donation for The Paracast? Although ads help cover a small part of our expenses, the income they produce is never enough. Also, we do not receive any revenue from the ads placed on the show by our network or local stations. So we hope you're able to help fill the gap if you can to help us cover increasing server costs and other expenses -- or perhaps provide a little extra cash for lunch. No contribution is too small (or too large :). We have a Donate link on our home page, below the logo and audio player. There's also a Donate link on our forums, right below our logo. Or just send your PayPal donation direct to sales (at) theparacast (dot) com.

Attention U.S. Listeners: Help Us Bring The Paracast to Your City! Last summer, The Paracast joined the GCN radio network. This represented a huge step in bringing our show to a larger, mainstream audience. But we need your help to add additional affiliates to our growing network. Please ask one of your local talk stations if they are interested in carrying The Paracast. Feel free to contact us directly with the names of programming people we might be able to contact on your behalf. We can't do this alone, and if you succeed in convincing your local station to carry the show, we'll reward you with one of our special T-shirts, and other goodies. With your help, The Paracast can grow into one of the most popular paranormal shows on the planet!

Please Visit Our New Online Store: You asked, and we answered. We are now taking orders for The Official Paracast T-Shirt and an expanded collection of other specially customized merchandise. What About Those Secret Bases?
By Gene Steinberg

Loads of sci-fi movies and TV shows that cover conspiracies will commonly talk about the alleged goings on at Nevada’s Area 51 and other supposedly top secret bases around the world. Whether secret weapons, or captured UFOs, the speculation is positively endless.

Occasionally you even hear from people who claim to have guilty knowledge of what’s actually going in those plaes, and some even talk of vast underground hangers and laboratories that house all sorts of developmental aircraft, not to mention, of course, some UFO wreckage.

Since these installations, when they actually exist, won’t let outsiders in to look around, the mind is free to wonder about what’s really going on. Of course, actual information does come down the pike on occasion, such as the fact that a some of our advanced aircraft was tested over at Area 51. Examples include the U2 spy plane, stealth bombers and more.

It makes perfect sense to want to focus development and test flights in and around such a base. But it’s also true that, once airborne, regular people are going to see such craft and perhaps mistake them as UFOs.

It may well be that a fair number of puzzling UFO cases can be attributed to sightings of supposedly secret aircraft developed by our military. Certainly, governments aren’t going to spill the beans because of national security considerations. That makes perfect sense.

On the other hand, if there are other things going on at these secret installations, such as dissecting the wreckage of a UFO, we would all want to know about that too. But matters of national security would be even more prominent in such cases, whether or not we’re making any progress towards reverse engineering such advanced aircraft.

But getting to the bottom of such claims is another story entirely.

Those who have followed the UFO mystery for a number of years have no doubt read stories about some people who claim to know what’s really going on at Area 51 and elsewhere. Take Robert Lazar, a curious character who claims to have worked at Area 51 for a brief period of time.

Of course, proof of what Lazar says is generally lacking. Some have pointed out, for example, that his educational credits simply don’t hold up. You cannot find evidence that he received any advanced degrees, though there is always the excuse that some of his records were expunged for unknown reasons. Then again, as regular listeners to The Paracast know full well, Lazar isn’t the only individual with possibly bogus credentials.

Now I suppose it’s not impossible to eliminate public records of one’s existence, at least if you recall how it was done in the sci-fi comedy movie, “Men In Black.” There Tommy Lee Jones, portraying Agent K, erases the personal, educational and work history of his new colleague, Agent J, as played by Will Smith. The process merely involves erasing a few entries on a computer terminal, and suddenly the individual known as James Darrel Edwards III disappears. How that impacts his friends and family is another matter entirely, and perhaps one of the logical inconsistencies of the film.

Sure, the MIB employ a pistol-like gadget that can wipe out your memories, but it’s a process that is generally done with individuals or small groups -- or maybe the MIB visited all of the people in Agent J’s former life and zapped them.

But that’s a fantasy. Surely people like Bob Lazar don’t expect us to believe that we’re doing such things in real life, let alone that such technology even exists. Imagine how that would impact criminals, who would make themselves nonexistent simply by hacking the right computers. DNA and fingerprint tests would be useless.

To be quite serious, however, when you consider secret bases and the secret activities that may occur in those locales, you also have to wonder what portion of UFO sightings are actually terrestrial craft undergoing test flights. Possibly a fair number, particularly in the vicinity of an Area 51 or similar installation, although nothing prevents the authorities from carrying out flight tests elsewhere. They’ll just get caught up in the UFO noise, and won’t be taken seriously.

On the other hand, UFO sightings preceded those purported aircraft tests, so it’s not as if the secret weapons theory is necessarily all-encompassing. But terrestrial explanations need to be considered, at least in some cases, before we can seek out that paranormal signal, and discover what is really going on.

Note: If you want to know more about the subject of secret bases and the activities that might occur in such places, consider Nick Redfern’s fascinating new book, “Keep Out.”
