Former Government Officials and UFOs

In the early days of the modern UFO era, it was rare to hear something positive about the phenomenon from a prominent person. This was especially true when it came to government officials, whether still on the job or not.
One notable exception came from Admiral Roscoe Hillenkoetter, who was the first director of the CIA from 1947-1950. He was a class buddy of UFO author Major Donald E. Keyhoe and, for a time, served on the board of Keyhoe’s UFO group, NICAP. That, of course, resulted in suspicions about its motives and whether it might be a government front.
Regardless, Hillenkoetter’s comments, as quoted by Major Keyhoe in his 1975 book, “Aliens from Space,” are notable:
“It is time for the truth to be brought out.…Behind the scenes, high-ranking Air Force officials are soberly concerned about UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense.…”
But what about one of his modern-day successors, such as John O. Brennan, who served in that post for four years under President Obama’s administration? Well, he made some telling comments about UFOs during an interview with Tyler Cowen on December 16, 2020, which I’ll excerpt:
“I’ve seen some of those videos from Navy pilots, and I must tell you that they are quite eyebrow-raising when you look at them. You try to ensure that you have as much data as possible in terms of visuals and also different types of maybe technical collection of sensors that you have at the time.
“Also, I believe, it’s important to reach out into other environments and find out, were there any type of weather phenomena at that time that might have, in fact, created the appearance of the phenomenon that you’re looking at? Were there some things that were happening on the ground, or other types of phenomena that could help explain what seems to be quite a mystery as far as what is there?
“I think an important thing for analysts to do is not to go into this type of challenge either discounting certain types of possibilities or believing in advance that it is likely X, Y, or Z. You really have to approach it with an open mind, but get as much data as possible and get as much expertise as possible brought to bear.”
So what does he think is causing it?
“[laughs] I don’t know. When people talk about it, is there other life besides what’s in the States, in the world, the globe? Life is defined in many different ways. I think it’s a bit presumptuous and arrogant for us to believe that there’s no other form of life anywhere in the entire universe. What that might be is subject to a lot of different views.
“But I think some of the phenomena we’re going to be seeing continues to be unexplained and might, in fact, be some type of phenomenon that is the result of something that we don’t yet understand and that could involve some type of activity that some might say constitutes a different form of life.”
Now Brennan is being especially cautious here, but the meaning is clear. Something unexplained is going on and, to repeat what he said: “You really have to approach it with an open mind.”
It might not quite satisfy people who believe in extraterrestrial visitors, but it’s more sensible from a scientific point of view.
On the other hand, yet another former government official is far more forthcoming about what he thinks; maybe too forthcoming.
According to a report in Yediot Aharonot, an Israeli newspaper, one Haim Eshed, a retired general former head of Israel’s Defense Ministry’s “space directorate,” we have been in contact with emissaries from a “galactic federation.”
Now some of his comments are out there. So he also said that Earthlings have signed agreements of cooperation with ET, and that there’s an “underground base in the depths of Mars” where American astronauts and ET are evidently hanging out.
Just as curious was the claim that President Trump, now in the waning days of his administration (unless you believe the conspiracy theories), knows all this but has opted not to disclose any of it in fear of possible “mass hysteria.”
Eshed claims that “They have been waiting until today for humanity to develop and reach a stage where we will understand, in general, what space and spaceships are.”
OK, I suppose.
Now Eshed is certainly not alone in harboring extreme views among former government officials. Consider, for example, one Paul Hellyer, long active in Canadian politics, and a former associate defense minister, who claims that UFOs became more active because, “man was stupid enough to invent the atomic bomb. Aliens are frightened that we're going to use it again (and again) and that this will affect the whole balance of the cosmos.”
Now some might be suspicious of the source of this interview, Russia Today, but Hellyer has said pretty much the same thing elsewhere. And, yes, it sure sounds very much like the plot of the classic 1951 sci-fi movie, “The Day the Earth Stood Still.”
Hellyer also claims that ET wants to show us a better way, a way to live in peace, but that we have to, I guess, just ask.
Now some might suggest that Hellyer, now 97 years of age, may just be losing it, and that explains some of his more credulous comments about UFOs. In large part, his comments haven’t been taken all that seriously over the years, so I’ll leave it there.
But one thing is certain: Even a few minutes online will reveal a number of favorable UFO comments from former government officials around the world. One presumes at some might have inside knowledge about what’s going on and thus we should pay attention to what they say.
A notable and far more credible example is Christopher Mellon, who worked in an intelligence capacity at several positions, including a stint as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence under Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush.
His pro-UFO comments form a key part of James Fox’s UFO documentary, “The Phenomenon,” and they are among the highlights of the film.
