Please ask one of your local talk stations if they are interested in carrying The Paracast. Feel free to contact us directly with the names of programming people we might be able to contact on your behalf. We can't do this alone, and if you succeed in convincing your local station to carry the show, we'll reward you with one of our special T-shirts, and other goodies. What About a Secret Space Program?
By Gene Steinberg

During the heady 1960s, before the bullets of one or more assassins struck him down, President John F. Kennedy promised that the U.S. would land a man on the Moon before the end of the decade. His successors, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon, carried on to fulfill that promise, and on July 20, 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made it a reality.

There were a few more Moon landings, but the original Apollo program came to an end without concrete plans for further lunar exploration by humans. In the 1980s, we began the space shuttle program with somewhat clumsy reusable spacecraft. They were useful for ferrying astronauts to space stations, or to perform onboard experiments, but it took us no closer to landing yet again on another world.

So even though humans perfected the technology in 1969, the next attempt by humans to personally visit the Moon, Mars or any other world won’t resume until 2030 or beyond unless things change drastically. But that’s not so likely a prospect. NASA budgets have been cut back severely, private companies are just getting in on the ground floor with orbital spacecraft, and other countries aren’t faring any better.

Or at least that’s what the powers that be tell us. After all, there are other priorities, such as the endless battle over the health care law, or setting priorities for the disadvantaged, such as whether they are entitled to supplemental nutrition grants, which we all call “food stamps.” It’s all about austerity, not investing in people or science.

In light of the problems that afflict the U.S. and other countries, space travel has been more or less left on the back burner. But the economy was soaring for many years before the 2007/2008 recession, so why was there such little emphasis on a space program over the years? At one time, it was believed we would have sent humans to Mars by now, and possibly begun trips to other parts of our solar system. All of the sci-fi writers who expected more from space exploration must surely be disappointed.

Yet there are conspiracy theories that suggest that we cut back on space exploration due to external forces, that someone or something or some unexpected event forced us to reconsider the plan. If you’ve followed UFO lore over the years, you have likely heard claims of possible alien artifacts on the Moon and Mars. Photos show some curious things, such as a possible alien face on Mars, or are they just gigantic Rorschach tests, immense equivalents of the very mundane ink blot test?

Now confirming whether these curious pictures indicate the presence of aliens now or at some time in the past would likely require up-close photos and videos, if not a personal visit to assess the details. But since we aren’t sending people to other worlds, that sure doesn’t seem to be a terribly likely prospect, at least over the next couple of decades.

But there is another theory about the cutback in the space program, and that is that it was never cut back!

So instead of staging launches of spacecraft as public events as we did in the past, the military has engaged in a secret space exploration program. Craft are launched from military installations that do not receive coverage from the media, and the successes or failures of those launchings are never announced.

If you take space technology in a linear path from the 1960s to the present day, is it at all possible that we have already sent humans to the Moon and Mars? Are there already bases on both, with regular transport of crews and supplies, or did we abandon them to their fates, or somehow establish a self-sustaining colony?

Of course, this is a theory that cannot be proven. Unless we could somehow track the comings and goings of these spaceships, or someone in the know revealed the facts about a top secret space program with evidence that could not be refuted, how could we possibly know whether or not it was true? I might even suppose that some of the craft launched from those bases might indeed be seen from time to time, but they would just be UFOs. Unless you were close enough to capture a clear image of such craft, how would you know what they really were? Even then, the authorities could claim that such rocket ships were just launching military satellites.

Now I wouldn’t presume to guess where the secret launch bases might be located, but I’m sure you can take a map and find a number of suitable places that would be sufficiently far from civilization as to go unnoticed.

But if we are already actively exploring space in this fashion, why is it being kept secret? Where’s the advantage in that? Or has something been discovered that cannot be revealed to the public? What could that “something” be? Well, one might envision an alien obelisk in the fashion of the ones in the classic sci-fi movie, “2001.” Maybe there are beings out there with which we communicate on a regular basis.

Or maybe the most frightening prospect of all, that we have uncovered evidence of a possible alien invasion, and we are doing our best under deep cover to find a way to defend ourselves, if such a thing was truly possible, of course.

I am not about to make a guess, good or otherwise, simply because there is just no evidence that a secret space program has been conducted, or is being conducted. Yes, we know about spy satellites that are launched by different countries to protect national security. But that’s a far cry from sending astronauts to other worlds, on missions that their friends and families might never know about, to do whatever is required to perform their missions with the highest degree of success.

Even if such a thing was true, I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that even the President of the United States has absolutely no clue about what is really going on, not just because of plausible deniability, but because of the temporary nature of the job. Indeed, a political leader might be the last to know the truth.

But that assumes there is actually a truth to be told, and I’m not at all convinced of any such thing.

I have no doubt that there is a secret space program, but it consists of things far less fantastical than manned Moon or Mars bases.
