This Week's Episode: Gene and Randall present prolific Fortean writer/researcher Red Pill Junkie (Miguel Romero). In this episode, RPJ will discuss the latest scuttlebutt in the UFO field, including the possible implications of the recent Pentagon UAP Task Force, and whether it'll bring us any closer to a solution to the mystery. Agnostic gnostic, walking conundrum and metaphysical oxymoron (with emphasis — by his own admission — on the "moron" part ), the mysterious RPJ leaves a double life: By day he serves as Grand Master in the International Sacred Order of Lucha Libre. At night he pursues his life-long study of everything mysterious and/or "paranormal." When he's not exploring the web looking for his daily fix of Forteana, he can be found making artsy stuff, fooling around on social media, or offering his services as writer and news administrator at The Daily Grail.

The Possible Dangers of Physical UFOs

By Gene Steinberg

I have little doubt that most of you favor the theory that UFOs are extraterrestrial, that they are solid objects that you can see, touch and smell. If you were to come upon one, of course, you may just want to look but do not touch.

The reason I suggest being cautious is that, again assuming physical aircraft, they may emit some sort of radiation that could harm humans. I consider the 1980 Cash-Landrum and Rendlesham Forest encounters where coming into direct contact with a UFO may have caused some witnesses to become ill.

I recall the March 1, 2o15 episode of The Paracast, featuring one of the key witnesses to the Rendlesham UFO, John Burroughs. We focused on his difficulty persuading the U.S. Veterans Administration to pay for treatment for the injuries he claimed to have suffered from his UFO encounter. Indeed, he had to hire an attorney to fight for his rights.

Now I am not going to get into the political issues and the lapses in the way in which healthcare is delivered in the U.S. compared to other developed countries. The point is that, if the Rendlesham encounter involved a spaceship, it may well be that ET is dangerous to our health.

That shouldn’t be particularly surprising. More to the point, one would expect more than just the possible radiation emitted by an alien spacecraft. What about its pilots, assuming they are living creatures rather than robots? Wouldn’t there be a danger from possible alien microbes? It’s hard enough to deal with the ones we have on Earth.

Indeed, one might recall the plot resolution of “War of the Worlds,” the 1898 sci-fi novel from H.G. Wells that inspired many a movie about aliens on the loose. In that story — and the movies based on it — ET is invincible, except that our invaders failed to account for the impact of Earthly viruses, such as the common cold. That’s what does them in.

This may have made sense in 1898, and possibly in those movies, but as a practical matter it defies logic. An advanced alien species wanting to conquer another planet would certainly be smart enough to take precautions against local viruses. Surely samples can be taken of microbes that may do them harm. Perhaps they wouldn’t care of we were infected, but otherwise protecting themselves would only make sense.

I would assume that, in the Star Trek universe, space travelers would as a matter of course make sure that they cannot be infected by local viruses, nor could they infect the inhabitants of the planets they are visiting.

By the same token, I’d assume that the forces behind the UFOs, if they are living or computerized beings, would consider similar precautions in visiting Earth. On that basis, it would seem that such incidents as Cash-Landrum and Rendlesham are outliers. Our visitors would not be so foolish as to allow such a thing to happen, assuming, again, that they meant us no harm.

That raises the possibility that at least these two encounters did not involve the presence of ET, but represented some sort of government experiment in which the authorities just didn’t care how people might suffer from close proximity to the craft.

Now I suppose one might suggest, that if all or most intelligent life in the universe emerges from the same building blocks, that viruses on different planets might be similar. But as we see with COVID-19, there are always alternative infections and mutations with which to contend.

Then again, intelligences that are hundreds or thousands of years ahead of us may not have to concern themselves about such matters. They know how to protect themselves and the inhabitants of the planets that they visit. They may have reached a point where all viruses were eradicated, and thus it’s never an issue, and they are thus immune to local microbes.

The other consideration is language. Star Trek producers devised a universal translator scheme as a plot device for the show, since just having people speak plain English is far easier to follow than to deal with translations and subtitles; well, except for a few scenes here and there.

In the 2016 film, “Arrival” (not the cheesy 1996 flick, “The Arrival”), ET communicates with us across time. The concept takes some getting used to, and I would suggest you watch the film to see how it’s handled.

But it points to a potential plot hole. If we are dealing with an advanced race of beings capable of star travel, surely they’d have figured out a scheme by which they can communicate with us. In “Arrival,” it all depends on the work of an Earth linguist to figure out how to have that conversation.

Regardless, the film presents an intriguing mind puzzle, but not one that is necessarily user friendly. However, it did well enough at the box office, and its high favorability ratings indicate that enough people were curious enough to make the effort to understand the complicated plot points.

Besides, it did have a happy ending.

Still, I think that any race smart enough to travel across the stars would consider issues of communication and health as part of preparing for such trips. If they’ve been here, as some suggest, for centuries or longer, they would long ago have devised ways to speak with humans, and to protect themselves — and us — from catching colds and other ailments.

Indeed, they might have all sorts of tricks up their sleeves — or whatever you’d like to call such abilities — to manage matters of healthcare and conversing with the locals. Having an alien confront me and addressing me in perfect English would make perfect sense. At least it would demonstrate that they had enough respect to learn at least one human language.

This doesn’t dismiss the possibility of mental telepathy of course. Direct mind-to-mind communication might be a lot more efficient. They wouldn’t need to build a translation system. Maybe they also have an alien vaccine that could protect us from all known diseases from our planet — and theirs. But there’s no way to know. Even those who claim to talk to ET never manage to secure any alien technology to prove such claims.
