Is the Media Finally Taking UFOs Seriously?

You have to credit the reporter who first coined the term “flying saucer” with the ease with which sightings were regarded with a wink and an appropriately sarcastic aside. After all, how could anyone in his (or her) right mind believe such things were real?

Even after flying saucers were largely supplanted with the UFO label, that didn’t stop the media from laughing at the very idea that any of those reports had an ounce of reality behind them. If it wasn’t just a conventional object that was misidentified, the witness was just crazy -- end of story.

Certainly some of the wacko elements of the UFO field aren’t helping matters any with fanciful tales of secret government plots to harass selected portions of the populace for obscure reasons, or preparing us the ultimate disclosure of the ET’s presence.

Before I go on, I should mention that I’m not saying the possibility that the governments of our planet know the truth and are withholding it from us isn’t likely. Certainly there would be security concerns implicit in the presence of UFOs. Even though lots of documents outside of the U.S. have been revealed, it’s pretty clear that we’re not getting all of it.

In any case, I do think that UFOs are being taken more seriously by the news media these days. Yes, the reality shows on the History Channel and other cable stations may be designed strictly for entertainment and ratings, and thus hype questionable claims without apology. But it’s also true that some UFO-related stories are being taken quite seriously.

The O’Hare sighting in Chicago was given essentially straight treatment by most of the mainstream press. The same holds true for the Stephenville, Texas affair.

Just this week, as the latest document release from the UK’s Ministry of Defense was being evaluated, one specific report came to light that is garnering a whole lot of attention.

According to published reports, this new collection of 5,000 documents, covering 1993 to 2005, contain several letters from the grandson of one of Winston Churchill’s personal bodyguards, claiming that the late British Prime Minister ordered a cover-up of a UFO sighting report in World War II that involved a UFO and an RAF aircraft.

The order was allegedly issued out of fear of a possible panic and a loss in faith of Earthly religions, and it reportedly happened during a meeting between Churchill and Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who was the U.S. Commander of the Allied Forces at the time. The bodyguard in question supposedly overheard that conversation.

The UFO case involved a reconnaissance plane that was returning from a mission, when it was apparently shadowed by a noiseless metallic UFO near the English coast, perhaps over Cumbria. Although the craft was said to have been photographed, none of those photos have as yet turned up.

Now during his term as president Eisenhower never treated UFOs positively. Besides, the recollections of someone’s grandson, describing something his mother told him about his dad, do not rise to the status as absolute evidence of Churchill’s actions, since nothing has come to light that would confirm the story. It has, though, been reported that Churchill had expressed a serious interest in UFOs in the early 1950s.

What is fascinating about this report is how seriously it’s being treated. Sure, there’s ample reason to be skeptical of the claim, but the details are being treated in the same fashion as any news story, totally without the sarcastic asides.

Maybe it doesn’t signal a real trend, but it would be nice to see UFO reports no longer being confined to the back pages of your daily paper, in sections devoted to silly human interest reports.
