Politically Correct UFOs
By Gene Steinberg
I suppose it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to regard UFOs as anything that’s politically correct. But when you mention the term Unidentified Flying Objects, the usual assumption among people who believe in these things is that the ones that can’t be conventionally explained are probably visitors from another planet. Disbelievers will simply say they don’t believe the aliens are here and be done with it.
Even when UFOs are being covered in an essentially serious matter — and I would not say “essentially serious” when it comes to some of those reality TV shows — it’s not so much a mystery as an either/or. Either they come from another planet, or they can be explained by more mundane means. There is no room for any other possibility.
That approach is nothing new. It was taken back in the 1950s by such early researchers as Major Donald E. Keyhoe, who wrote a book entitled, “Flying Saucers from Outer Space.” Keyhoe believed the saucers were spaceships and never turned back, or at least hadn’t done so publicly even at the end of his days.
But not everyone who explored the subject in the those days necessarily supported the extraterrestrial hypothesis (or ETH). When he finally came to realize that some UFO sightings couldn’t be explained conventionally, Dr. J. Allen Hynek adopted the ETH. But those who knew him in the final years of his life realized that his views had embraced a more expensive reality on the subject. I know I got that strong hint when I interviewed him once, and I only wish I had a copy of the recording. It would certainly have some value for posterity if nothing else.
But what is this expansive reality?
Well, some suggest that at least some UFOs may actually blink in and out of our reality from another plane of existence, or another dimension. Such a place may coexist in the same place as ours, but on a different vibratory frequency or perhaps in a different universe. Whether by a technological achievement or accident, it is sometimes possible to travel from one dimension to another.
By technology I mean some mechanism that allows the crew of the UFO to jump into another dimension. Maybe a space warp generator of some kind? But warp travel, used in “Star Trek,” is supposed to represent a method to travel faster than the speed of light by jumping into some alternate space where the voyage across light years of space is somehow shortened. Now in “Star Trek,” they used warp drive as a gimmick to avoid boring fans with lengthy trips from one star system to another. Engage warp drive, and the trip took weeks, days, or even hours.
If such a thing really exists in our universe, or another, perhaps travelers don’t just jump across the stars, but across dimensions.
But what do I mean by accident?
Well, what if some unknown condition caused the barrier between dimensions, or whatever you want to call it, to temporarily disappear in some locales. If it happens, spaceships and living creatures can easily jump from one reality to another. This portal is used as yet another sci-fi gimmick, assuming that the world to which you travel is all or mostly compatible with the one you left, maybe a direct counterpart. That means you don’t just jump into a place with the wrong atmosphere and other surface conditions, since it would mean you’re as good as dead.
Some UFO researchers point to areas on our world that seem to attract a higher percentage of anomalous events, including UFOs, creature sightings and other unusual occurrences. These portals appear to allow you to pass back and forth, I suppose, or maybe, as in the TV series, “Primeval,” they only appear temporarily, for a few minutes or a few hours. If you’re lucky enough to be there when the anomaly or portal appears, you can easily transport yourself between realities. But what if the portal vanishes never to return? Does that mean you are abandoned in your new location?
I can only refer to Fortean stories over the years about people who seem to be out of time or space, because they have the wrong clothing, and seem totally oblivious to the local culture. Did they jump through a portal by accident, or just to see what that swirling or watery effect just ahead was all about?
Other UFO theories encompass another race who resides on our planet, but mostly keeps its distance. Maybe they have bases under the sea or in caverns, and they only emerge when it suits their needs, or perhaps to do reconnaissance. One argument against this theory, though, is why they would choose what seems to be a less inviting locale to house their civilization, while allowing humans the freedom to occupy, and perhaps despoil, the surface world. Wouldn’t they just consider taking over, or would that violate their code of ethics?
But it wouldn’t stop them from, on occasion, making contact with humans and warning them of the damage they are doing to mother Earth. It’s not that those warnings are necessarily taken seriously, however. You’d think that if they had a truly urgent pronouncement to deliver, they’d make an effort to contact the government officials and scientists who might actually be able to do something about it.
I have only scratched the surface here, since there are other possibilities to explain UFOs. One is that they may seem to be physical aircraft, but they are only assuming a form that is consistent with our culture. That being the case, they may have appeared in totally different forms in ages past, which might explain other anomalous events over the centuries.
The main point is that, yes, it does appear there is a high potential for huge numbers of inhabited planets to exist in our galaxy. If only a small portion have advanced civilizations, some of them may have developed the technology to travel across the stars, and a smaller number of these races are here now watching over us, or something. It’s so logical, so simple, why consider anything else?
But even if those civilizations exist, would they really want to come here? Well, if they seeded humans, if they are therefore our creators, that would make sense. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the ETH is the one and only reasonable explanation for UFOs, or that UFOs all have the same source.
