This method with projections seems rather crude and would be marginally effective and only at distance.

The use of metamaterials sounds more promising. There is much more research in that field.

There is also lots of breakthroughs happening in the nano technology field and printable OLED displays that can be used on any surface including clothing to provide active camouflage. I've been keeping a close eye on these developments because by interest in large screen displays. I think this is the most promising area where we will see real applications. The use of advertising displays seen in Minority Report is much closer to reality than most people realize.
