How to introduce my daughter to UFO's/Paranormal

First, my sympathies to David for his implant problems. We've spent a lot of money on the insertion, removal, and recovery from just one implant for my wife, and she still doesn't have a functional implant.

Second, my wife is very interested in renewable energy/solar energy, and has been since before it became a hot issue, so to speak. She listens to several podcasts that are energy-related, and one of them is Free Energy Now. I noticed that one of the recent eps of Free Energy Now featured Steven Greer of Disclosure Project notoriety talking about UFO energy sources, and I mentioned to my wife that Greer is a highly controversial figure in the UFO community, and that he was considered really "out there." She had already heard the podcast, though, and figured that out on her own!

Anyway, to finally get to the point of my post. Our twelve year old daughter overheard this conversation and said "Can I have some podcasts?" We were thrilled, and asked her what she was interested in. She said "The UFOs sound interesting." When I was her age (younger, actually) I read Frank Edwards' then-new book _Flying Saucers, Serious Business_. I didn't understand all of it but it was fascinating and scary, too. I haven't heard any paranormal podcasts that don't assume a pretty adult level of familiarity with the topic and its major players. So, what would this forum recommend for an introduction to the subject for a twelve-year-old?

There's a few forum members here that are around her age. 13 and 14 come to mind.

I liked looking at pics and watching shows on the paranormal when I was young. I wasn't aware of any radio shows dealing with it then. Not sure if I would understood the vocabulary or not.

I can't think of one thing that is age appropriate, marmer. Because children are so impressionable, I'd keep a very close eye on what she does read or hear on a podcast. Obviously, an appropriate education on the paranormal would have to include ufos, but so much of that is pretty scary. I would have wished she'd stared with ghosts! LOL

Did you ask why she is interested particularly in ufos? Might be a question worth asking before trying to find what you think might be appropriate. At least I would work from there with my kids. Mine aren't really interested though. They just think I'm nuts.

I'm going to try Mysterious Universe and use it as fodder for discussion. As to why, I suspect it's because of the saturation of UFO and alien imagery and ideas in our culture today, and just because it's an interesting mystery. She's nearly thirteen, and pretty savvy. If she gets spooked, then we'll deal with it then. Her initial reaction to MU was pretty positive.

I got interested just because, back in the 60s, my parents would occasionally see lights in the night sky that they didn't think were aircraft or satellites. I never saw one, and I just thought it was interesting. They didn't really make much of it, it was certainly not a real "sighting" or "encounter."

Sounds like a good way to start, MU. I also forget that kids are more savvy now, even more so than my kids were at that age. Different world.
