Google to enter clean-energy business

Since we recently talked quite a lot about alternative ways of generating energy, I thought this news item was rather interesting and encouraging. To my mind, in the absence of true political leadership, only large corporations such as Google with huge cash reserves stand a chance of making a difference. Let's see how they will fare with this initiative. In particular, I find interesting that they mention geothermal energy, which has great potential, yet often gets overlooked.

Good luck to them.

Interestingly, CNN just put up a video about the use of geothermal energy in the Philippines. One power plant provides power for 700.000 households, that's well over a million people.

Geothermal energy can be used everywhere, not only in regions where the earth is hot directly below the surface. One needs to drill deep enough - around 1 km - and pump cold water into the ground. It comes gushing back to the surface as steam.

I just wanted to say, I'm glad this thread exist. But, I won't be here much. This subject really PISSES me off. Ya, know, it's like giving a bum a 100 dollar bill, then the bum ask you for 20 cent. Tesla, blah blah blah. Very sad, so, just know I'm with the thread in spirit:) But if I were in comment, I'd be more pissed off than I am usually. Lots of sick fukin things are going on in the face of the fact we could have "free" energy.

Great thread.
There is a company here in South Australia poised to bring online a Geo-Thermal power station. it has been around for a few years, trying to get off the ground but meeting with a sort of bland response from the Aust. Federal Government. There has even been a hint of sabotage (surprise, surprise) around a drilling rig that was conveniently damaged and caused a vital delay in the company meeting Govt. approval.
Apparently there is enormous potential for more of the same in that area, which is around the Olympic Dam Uranium Mine complex which, when finished, will become the largest open cut mine in the world.

I believe, also, in New Zealand, there are power stations that run off the steam generated by some sort of giant volcanic spring. (any Enzedders out there will be able to explain far better than I!)

I agree PP. As MTMEars has explained there is enormous potential for the use of free energy out there but it will always be stifled by those with vested interests in the energy systems status quo.

Yes there is. NZ uses some 70% renewables, mostly hydro-dams. The example of NZ shows that it can be done.

A follow-up interview to the original story:

"As a fast-growing company we realize that if we don't become part of the solution, we will be part of the problem, and that's not acceptable to (co-founders) Larry (Page), or Sergey (Brin), or me or any of us. We don't want to be part of the problem."
