Even though Gene brought the new servers up on Monday, my ISP's DNS service still isn't up-to-date - as a result I've been seeing the 'board unavailable' notice for the last 3 days!!

I only managed to get on after changing my DNS service to opendns.com - something that Gene suggested about 2 minutes after I had done it. :)

I wonder who else is 'locked out' and doesn't realize that their DNS service may not have updated to point to the new servers...

To clarify, www.opendns.com is a faster, safer DNS that works with ALL ISPs. It provides built-in phishing protection and we have the ability to update the DNS caches over there.

When we did our site update -- which involved moving to newer, faster, semi-dedicated servers -- we were actually back online within about three hours.

However, DNS information, which is used to actually "locate" a site, needs to be updated to reflect the change. Not all DNS servers are quick about such things, so it can take up to 72 hours for those changes to propagate around the world.

I've gone back to the old version of the boards and listed the actual IP address of our new servers, so you can get back here if you find yourself switching back and forth.

This should all settle down in another day or so, assuming your ISP is doing its job, of course.

Actually, I've had to go back to my ISP's DNS service 'cos I can't resolve my personal email pop servers through openDNS...

Ouch.

You should report this to them. They're pretty easy to deal with.

Is it me or is the forum's built in clock seriously messed up?

The server's clock is messed up. They're working on that, so we hope to have it fixed by the weekend, or we'll compensate. Seems they're in Eastern time and I'm in Mountain Standard.

In the end, I traced my email problems to my Linux DNS configuration...

...but the underlying forum problem *was* the fault of my ISP's DNS service...

...and anyway, I've since discovered that my ISP *appears to be* filtering out certain domain names from their DNS servers. Another good reason to switch to opendns.com !!

BTW, just to be clear, when I say "certain domain names", I don't mean anything 'unsavoury'...

(Of course, there might be a different explanation for unresolved DNS lookups, but it seems strange to me that certain sites are working one day and unreachable the next if I go through my ISP's DNS service but are *still reachable* if I use opendns.com)...
