Does the U.S. Government Really Know the UFO Secret?
By Gene Steinberg

It’s part and parcel of the disclosure movement that the U.S. government, somewhere, somehow, has guilty knowledge of what UFOs are but has chosen to keep the secret for reasons best known to themselves. The secret fits the common meme about UFOs, that they are visitors from another world here for purposes unknown.

Now we can take this belief a few steps further. Some disclosure advocates believe the government may know a lot more than the alleged truth that we’re being visited by aliens. Perhaps they are in contact with them, maybe there’s a secret pact between us and them, possibly an exchange program, or a genetic hybrid experiment to which both parties have agreed. All without our knowledge of course.

Certainly this is a convenient point of view to take, make that an excuse, because it absolves us of the responsibility to solve the UFO mystery. It has already been solved. The government knows the truth, and that truth may even be shared among a number of governments. Or maybe they are waging an internal security battle to see if they can learn more about the UFOs, or curry favor with the aliens.

So many possibilities. So little evidence.

Now is any of this true? It’s really hard to know. We get glimmers of one or more truths about the origin and purpose of UFOs from time to time. Some UFO researchers, or UFO promoters, claim to be in touch with intelligence sources who are feeding them tidbits of truth to get the story out there. You wonder, however, why an intelligence apparatus that has successfully kept this alleged secret for nearly seven decades hasn’t managed to locate and deal with possible whistleblowers in the appropriate fashion.

Or maybe those supposed whistleblowers are deliberately spreading disinformation, to confuse and muddy the waters and the evidence of the real UFO cases. Perhaps the truth is hiding in plain sight, but separating the signal from the noise just hasn’t been possible.

For the sake of argument, if the U.S. government knows what’s really going on, how can they manage to hide that truth for so many years? Government secrets often leak like sieves, and what about people like Edward Snowdon, that low-level independent contractor, who managed to learn the truth about secret NSA surveillance activities of American people? To be fair, there are some who think Snowdon highly exaggerated some of the information he acquired, but that’s way beyond the scope of this article.

As to maintaining secrecy, it would make sense to keep the details in the hands of a few people. I’m not saying there was actually an MJ-12 group, such as claimed in those controversial documents first disclosed in the 1980s. I suppose it’s possible MJ-12 is not real, but based on the methods the government used to hide the truth about UFOs.

Regardless, if only a few people know, the possibilities for leaks are sharply reduced. But that doesn’t mean others don’t know parts of the real story. Information may be strategically parceled out to different agencies on a need to know basis, but the whole picture is never revealed. It may also be that certain research projects related to UFOs, and perhaps even the examination of supposed crashed spacecraft, are funneled to private industry under strict controls. So nothing suspicious turns up on a Freedom of Information request.

So instead of looking at one or more of those legendary secret locales where such research might be going on, such as Area 51 or Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, it all might be happening in private laboratories whose existence is never revealed.

How is all this paid for? Well, the usual explanation is a “black project” or “black money,” where billions of dollars can be conveniently moved around without knowledge of the supposed caretakers of the budget, the U.S. Congress. Sure, I suppose some of this information might be revealed in top secret briefings with certain members of Congressional committees, but I doubt it. Elected officials are notorious for revealing things when it suits their needs, whether to ensure reelection or serve the needs of their political parties.

But let me make it crystal clear: I am not suggesting any of this is true. I’ve simply assembled some of the most common theories expressed on what the U.S. authorities might know about UFOs and how that secret is maintained. It does make sense from a logical point of view, if true of course.

And if true, what motive would they have to hide the truth from the American people for so many years? Is it possible that they have guilty knowledge that the UFOs may have potentially hostile motives, and they are at a loss to know how to deal with the threat?

Sure, we have reports of possible gun fights involving UFOs, or our pilots firing at them, but that would be an act of hostility on our part, not theirs. Besides, if UFOs are advanced aircraft from another world, surely they’d have sophisticated weaponry with which to fight back the attackers. And, no, I don’t believe for a moment that radar, surely a primitive technology to alien beings hundreds or thousands of years ahead of us, can somehow bring down a UFO. Let’s get real!

It may just be, however, that the authorities are keeping the secret because they do not know very much about them! They have no control over the UFOs, no idea who or what pilots them. It’s all a mystery, and the military is certainly not going to want to admit that we are being visited by unknown aircraft, far in advance of ours, with unknown motives. Maybe they are still as stumped as we are, but revealing any such thing could have nasty security implications, as you might imagine.

Yes, I know we all want to know the truth about UFOs. But all these suspicions about what government officials really know may just be an excuse to avoid doing any real research. If someone else knows, just make them talk!

This is not to say demanding disclosure is a bad idea, as some disclosure-related events have produced compelling UFO reports. And that’s a good thing. But demands for disclosure were first made in the 1950s, and they went nowhere. Why should we believe anything’s going to change now?

Besides, all these assumptions are predicated on UFOs being physical aircraft from other worlds, other dimensions or what have you. If that’s not the case, all bets are off!

So much for ultraterrestrials.
