The Dangers of Tunnel Vision
By Gene Steinberg

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been following UFO lore to one degree or another for 66 years. I never, ever, expected to care about a single topic for so many years.

Indeed, I never expected the mystery to persist this long. I naturally assumed, at least way back when, that scientists would figure out what was going on. Or perhaps extraterrestrials would land and want to be taken to our leaders.

Despite the prevalence of alien-on-the-loose movies, especially in those days, I hoped that our visitors would be peaceful. At worst, they wouldn’t care one way or the other.

At the very least, if they planned to invade Earth, they had more than enough time and resources to accomplish the task. This would be especially true if Earth was visited in Biblical times. It wouldn’t take much to subdue us then with very little damage to people and property.

Of course, there are more elaborate theories about the presence of ET. One theory has it that our affairs are, to some degree, directed by “them.” How this impacts humanity’s constant tribal wars is anyone’s guess. Perhaps they enjoy the conflict, just as much as we might enjoy boxers and wrestlers, even martial arts practitioners, in the ring beating each other up.

So they sit back, watching those foolish Earthlings destroy themselves, perhaps even the environment. Perhaps they convey the details of these goings-on to their fellow beings back home — wherever that is — or they wait for what they regard as our inevitable destruction, ready to assume control.

All this without firing a shot.

It’s not a pleasant prospect, and I certainly hope that, if they exist, they are not so cruel. Besides, people who claim to have been in touch with advanced or higher beings almost universally assert that they come in peace. They bemoan our wars and the damage to our planet’s environment, after all.

Yet they never seem to offer any solutions. It’s all just talk, or thoughts in one’s head. Perhaps it just gives them plausible deniability.

The larger question is whether the UFO mystery exists by itself, independent of other incredible mysteries of our time. So when a UFO club brings in someone to talk about a different mystery, some sort of paranormal encounter, they might be regarded with skepticism.

Yes, the flying saucers are real. There is no doubt that the universe is teeming with life, and it is inevitable that one or more intelligent civilizations would come upon our backwards corner of the galaxy. They would want to visit us and, say, check things out.

All well and good, and it’s hard to dismiss such a possibility since humans are striving to venture into space, although our efforts have been mostly confined to nearby space and, of course, the moon.

Indeed, it’s a tragedy that our space programs haven’t taken us very far. Back in the 1970s, flush with the success with our moon landings, it was easy to envision humans traveling to Mars in a decade or two, and exploring other planets not long thereafter.

By the beginning of the 21st century, we’d have explored most of the planets in our solar system and we’d be ready to venture forth into interstellar space. It’s not that we expected warp drive, wormhole travel, stargates and such. We’d just plan for trips to take months, years, decades, centuries?

A common sci-fi trope is a huge city in space, where people spend their lives, and only their descendants are destined to reach a final destination. Or perhaps the crew is placed in stasis, only to awaken when they are nearing their destination.

That’s the scenario more or less played out in the 1956 sci-fi classic film, “Forbidden Planet.” But I don’t recall much in the way of specifics on how long such trips would take, although the method of managing crew members appeared to be a credible alternative for surviving long trips without physical deterioration.

Putting a crew in suspended animation might be worth considering when we begin our first efforts to transport a crew to Mars. Even a trip of many months might present the danger of causing permanent physical damage. Perhaps it won’t matter if it’s meant as a one-way trip, but the return to Earth would only complicate matters.

Of course, if ET arrived and demonstrated more sophisticated means to travel in space, this might not be an issue.

If ET is truly here.

But the UFO mystery appears to be far more complicated than it would seem. So we have the “hitchhiker effect” noted among researchers over the years. After a UFO sighting, the witness comes home only to suffer from mysterious and frightening symptoms, such as the presence of poltergeists.

Indeed, one of my old friends told me of the aftereffects of one such encounter back in the late 1960s. The episode involved him and his girlfriend at the time.

The proposal from the U.S. Congress that funds the Pentagon’s UAP project mentions “human effects,” although government officials don’t clearly define what that means. But if you examine some sightings beyond the basic encounter, you just might find reports of ongoing paranormal events.

We can go beyond that.

Locations that have possibly higher levels of UFO activity may also have reports of strange creatures, such as Bigfoot. Some researchers focus on the wider range of occurrences, such as Pennsylvania’s Stan Gordon. He comes on The Paracast every now and then to report on loads of ongoing paranormal events. It never seems to stop.

It may be simpler to segregate such reports. In this box are the UFO encounters, in this Bigfoot, in another winged creatures and dog men. Then there are ghosts and poltergeist occurrences, and these two are often placed within the same framework.

But it’s still a matter of considering a wider spectrum of paranormal experiences, if researchers are looking to broaden their horizons.

So when I’ve asked MUFON leaders over the years about human effects, they seem not to want to get involved. If the witness mentions it, fine. If not, it’s not a big deal to them. They appear to only be seeking evidence of ET, and choose to venture no farther.

Certainly there is no harm lumping together a host of paranormal reports. Perhaps they aren’t meant to fit into the same or similar categories, but at this stage, it makes less sense for a tunnel vision approach until we know more.
