This should come as no surprise to any of you in this day and age.

I don't claim the veneer of celebrity, but I've been a target of a hate campaign for a number of years now, ever since I first announced I had suffered from severe financial reverses.

In early March, for example, someone sent me a tweet offering to send a large donation via a wire transfer direct to my bank. I responded, and, moments later, my own Twitter account was taken over and the bank account numbers were posted publicly. Since I don't keep a lot of money in that account, it was easy to shut it down and activate a new account to replace it.

Around this time, a new Twitter hate campaign targeting me sprouted.

Just this week, an online streaming account suddenly expired. I checked with their support people, only to learn that someone had logged into my account and changed the settings to sunset my subscription. Just yesterday, someone posted my now-obsolete home address and closed bank account details on Twitter. I did what I could to block the message from my timeline, and complained again to Twitter, which doesn't much care it seems.

As you might expect, my online passwords are regularly changed.

Over the years, I've pitched for all the followers of my tech articles and radio show to use strong passwords, which may consist of random mixtures of upper and lower case characters, along with numbers and punctuation. A password manager app will also help, as will two-factor authentication, which we offer in the forums.

But security experts tell me that nobody — nobody — is immune, especially if hackers are after you for any reason.

I continue to redouble my efforts to protect my data, but as you probably know with all the news of accounts being compromised, even at one of the major credit bureaus, it requires constant vigilance.

It is technically illegal to hack someone's account, but police are loathe to enforce such laws unless there's the threat of ID theft, which has clearly occurred in my case, or the threat of bodily harm.

If this madness continues to occur, I will contact the appropriate authorities, and suggest everyone be on the lookout for similar examples of criminal behavior.

    hackers are out there!
    My twitter account was hacked.
I went to delete the account. funny thing. twitter keeps your account around for 30 days after you ask for a deletion. one of my best friends asked me why I was tweeting porn. worse my wife had told me her twitter was overwhelmed with porn. "from ME!"
took me a half hour but I got the old account back. the one that was supposed to be deleted. what I saw shocked me. porn nasty stuff to! I changed the email associated with the account then added a 9 digit password. and a personal question to lock the password then asked for a new deletion after removing the porn. my old twitter now is in the 30 day cycle. lets hope this time it goes.

    Gene,
Go to the FBI and all hacking is criminal offence which "Cambridge Analytica" have shown it seems to be wide spread.
Even Facebook being targeted by these hackers and ongoing battle for the IT institutions.

In general, the authorities will only act when there are a number of victims. It's not easy or cheap to mount this sort of investigation.

On the other hand, I think we all know the sources of potential offenders, and I will not rest until they are brought to justice.

Gene...two-factor authentication on everything. Email, Twitter, Facebook...Bank account (if the knuckledraggers support it--mine does).

This story demonstrates the stupidity on the part of social networks:

Twitter says all 336 million users should change their passwords

They claim that the cleartext password logs were an internal issue, but that doesn't mean that outsiders didn't get ahold of them. Twitter wouldn't want to admit that, as it would seriously hurt their user base; people would be cancelling in droves.

Curious that my hack episode and Bob's hack occurred in the last few weeks, when this was an existing issue.

Despite all the security precautions, my other bank account was hacked this morning, and cleaned of funds.

I don't know if I was the target, or the bank.

I should get all the money back, but it will take a while for the bank to investigate and do what has to be done.

I am really really sick of all this!

This event MUST be investigated by the FB I. Gene we are now in an area where law enforcement agencies MUST be involved.
If the police or FBI will not become involved scream till they do! Gene you were ROBBED. The bank has some explaining to do .
    1. Move all funds to an account that can not be online.
    2. Set up a 5 digit pin. (If your bank allows it)
    3. If you feel the bank can not protect you
    GET A NEW BANK!

I'm not aware of any normal bank that doesn't have online access, but I assure you that, once the money is recovered, I shall never use that bank again. I will open a new account somewhere else.

    I have a pin, I have two-factor authentication. Didn't help,

But, yes, I will contact the authorities. I also need to find out if others were impacted by this hack. I may not have been the direct target.

    Thanks Bob.

Believe it or not, sometimes a business account has fewer protections, and the bank fees are much higher.

    I'll check my options.

    I contacted my bank.
The way most folks hack is with an online account.
So ask your new bank to make sure you have NO online account.
    My bank offers the option.
You still can pay bills. You just have to call those you owe to pay them.
No online account is more work. But the peace of mind that it brings is worth it.

On a personal note we learned that McDonald's offers a scholarship program.
As I stated one of my daughters works for them. Recently she was promoted to crew lead.
At 16 she can go into management. We signed her up for the scholarship.
The skills she is learning will be critical in the future.
My personal situation is far from over but my oldest daughters are setting themselves up for the future.
    And that gives me peace

Not sure if it was meant for me, or a general bank hack. If there were enough victims, it might get media coverage. Otherwise, we may never know.

Regardless, I am not returning to that bank (Wells Fargo).

I would avoid Wells Fargo at all costs. Chase Bank is a good go-to option right now. And some smaller, community banks also offer good deals on checking accounts without the hassle of exorbitant fees.
Sending lots of good Karma your way, and wish you all the best.

    If you happen to live in the Seattle area, Dicks (the best hamburger fast food place there is IMO) offers this;

All Dick’s employees earn a base wage of $14/hour to start and Seattle employees get an additional $2/hour cost-of-living stipend. So $16/hour to start.

Shift Managers earn up to $5/hour over-and-above their base wage and Seattle stipend. Store Managers earn considerably more and all are promoted from within the company.

All employees who work 20 hours a week for at least six months and continue to work at least 20 hours a week while going to school have access to a $25,000 scholarship over 4 years. You can use this scholarship for any college, vocational or self-improvement program.

As an extension of our Scholarship Program, childcare assistance of between $3,500-$9,000 per year is available to employees working 20 hours per week for at least six months — and continue to work at least 20 hours per week while receiving childcare assistance.

If an employee doesn’t use any or all of their available scholarship fund for tuition, they can use it for childcare.

Dick’s offers 100% FREE employer-paid health insurance for all employees. Children are covered at 75%, spouses at 50%.

Dental coverage is 100% employer-paid for non-smoking employees, 50% for smokers.

The bank hack may have been an ID theft attempt.

I'm trying to get more details.

But I'm withholding specifics, because it appears that one or more people whom I suspect of being involved in these hacks appear to be monitoring this forum. I do not wish to give them any ammunition to expand their criminal behavior.
