This Strange Phenomenon In A New York Town Is Too Weird For Words

TEXT: "Hidden right before your eyes in the small town of Middlesex, awaits a mysterious hill that has caused quite the stir. Defying all laws of gravity, this peculiar hill is playing wicked stepchild to the all mighty Mother Nature. This easily accessible phenomenon has become such an intriguing tale that it no doubt has been a New York favorite for ages. Now here’s what we know…

[Graphic in Article Link]

"So, you're dying to know where all this magic is happening aren't you? Middlesex is a small town with a population of less than 2,000 residents right inside Yates County, New York. It is here, in the ridge of Newell Road, that you can find the area known as "Spook Hill." Spook Hill has rightfully earned its name by being one of New York's gravity hills!

[Graphic in Article Link]

"If you venture out to Newell Road, you'll want to stop your car just before you reach a driveway and Spike Road on your left, then place your car in neutral. Once you place your car in neutral, it is then you will find that your car is moving backwards...uphill! While this strange phenomenon is most popularly demonstrated with a car, it is also said to have worked with people on bikes, general round objects and even water.

[Graphic in Article Link]

"Due to the fact that the surrounding areas have been known to have haunted tendencies, many have speculated that the reason you find yourself going backwards is simply because you're being pushed by ghosts! Legend has it that near Canandaigua Lake lies a Native American burial ground, causing the area to have a very creepy vibe. If you're not into believing that paranormal forces could be playing a role in your everyday life, then you may be one of the many to wonder if there maybe lies an easier solution here. Some believe that what's actually happening at Spook Hill is an optical illusion or even something along the lines of magnetism!

"To get a better visual of what sort of phenomenon we’re really dealing with here, below you can check out visual proof of New York’s Spook Hill:

Spook Hill - Middlesex, Yates County NY [2013] - In The Finger Lakes
TEXT: "Published on Oct 11, 2013: Legend has it that if you put your car in neutral at a certain spot on Newell Road in Middlesex, Native American spirits (whose bodies are buried near by) will push your car back up the hill. So is there any truth to this? Well, yes there is a Native American burial ground near by -- just down the road on the hair pin turn on North Vine Valley Rd near the Canandaigua Lake. (FYI: about 100 years ago, a gentleman unearthed a Native American who was sitting halfway up with a pipe in his hand)."

"Intriguing, huh? If this sort of thing is right up your alley but you don’t live quite close to Middlesex, you can also find very similar gravity hills in Portville and Suffern, New York! Have you ever been to any of these hills, and if so what was your experience like?"

Magnetic Hills is explained here as an optical illusion in Scotland, but I don't think that explains the New York road above.

There is the phenomenon called Gravity Hills, explained below in the Wiki article, but I still don't think it explains the New York road. Any thoughts?

Gravity Hills

LINK: Gravity hill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TEXT: "A gravity hill, also known as a magnetic hill, mystery hill, mystery spot or gravity road, is a place where the layout of the surrounding land produces an optical illusion, making a slight downhill slope appear to be an uphill slope. Thus, a car left out of gear will appear to be rolling uphill against gravity. There are hundreds of recognised gravity hills around the world.

"The slope of gravity hills is an optical illusion, although sites are often accompanied by claims that magneticor even supernatural forces are at work. The most important factor contributing to the illusion is a completely or mostly obstructed horizon; without a horizon, judging the slope of a surface is difficult as a reliable reference is missing. Objects one would normally assume to be more or less perpendicular to the ground (such as trees) may actually be leaning, offsetting the visual reference.

"The illusion is similar to the Ames room, in which balls can also appear to roll against gravity.

"The opposite phenomenon—an uphill road that appears flat—is known in bicycle racing as a "false flat". "
