Are we sure that isn't a clip from an old UFO movie? The whole scene looks like a model to my eye...

Actually, on second thoughts, my money is on artifact from the photo developing process - looks like a defect in the film or some sort of 'emulsion' drip...

Why don't people use a lossless image format for these images now that broadband connections are common? The 'png' format isn't perfect for image analysis, but it does produce compact file sizes while retaining the original image whereas compressed jpegs obliterate fine detail with artifacts...
