You're right Tyder, she is trying to scare everyone. Expert or no, I'd say the "talk" is a worst case scenario given by an anti-nuclear power advocate, not a realistic assessment of the true level of danger.
The last statistic I heard was a claim of 70% accuracy in readings...not exactly the kind of intel that I'd want to bet my troops lives upon-yet still better than the 50% accuracy of chance.
I would really prefer to to read the actual study. Dogs use body language to communicate with each other, and are quite adept at learning the body language of human beings. So whether the dog is reading body language or responding to a mental stimulus would depend upon how the study is...
BTW I am still trying to finish listening to this episode...my comments?
I guess I'm just really sensitive to data and I couldn't feel any of it in this episode.
I'm in the same boat, mostly. I do have a co-worker that would fall into the "believer" category. Same at my old job, there were two guys there that were "believers." So there are very few people with which I can actually discuss any of the aspects of the paranormal other than ghosts. For...
Dian Fossey. Her research method which included the ascribing of personality traits (anthromorphism) to the apes that she was studying was considered taboo by most primatologists back in the 1970's. Yet her research is still considered "acceptable" and is studied and read by many aspiring...
Good analysis Ron. I'd add that science has taken a great deal of the mysticism out of the way the world works as well. We know the "why" to a lot of things that previous generations of humans didn't know. Modern science treatises don't usually end with "because that's the way God wants it."
Reflections from a member of the Paracast community:
The main problem, from my point of view, is that humans-no matter how advanced we think we are-are still hunter/gatherers by nature. And we humans have a basic desire to "believe" in something; sometimes so devoutly that they are...
Control.
I was raised in a fundamentalist, protestant, pentecostal environment (and am an atheist now.) I theorized at one "revival" that if there are 10 or 50 or 200 or 500 or 10,000 people with minds focused on one particular thing...they can make it happen. Especially if they have...
My apologies if you took that personally. To me though, the rash generalization that Hitler was "ir-religious" comes from those who read only the words and overlook the deeds. It's a common fallacy perpetuated by modern history books which overlook some of Hitler's odd tendencies as just...
While I agree with you, for the most part, the use of religion to create a common enemy, perceived or otherwise, is a common thread in some of the conflicts which you mention.
The non-belief in a religion or a deity does not necessarily exclude the use of those religious beliefs as a tool to...
