Revisiting UFO Vaporware
By Gene Steinberg

In the computer business, vaporware is the promise of new hardware or software with amazing new capabilities that never seems to appear. Over the years, companies have risen and fallen on the failure to deliver the goods. Sometimes the final product disappoints, sometimes it never seems to get released. There’s always an excuse, and it’s often hard to take the boasting seriously, since one is so often disappointed.

In our paranormal corner of the universe, I have also observed plenty of vaporware. Over the years I’ve heard researchers claim they have, for example, solved the UFO mystery. The truth is out there, and will be revealed shortly, any time now. Just be patient and you’ll share the truth. Sometimes that promise requires payment to be in on the secret, and this is the time for you to carefully check your wallet.

Sometimes it may be the promise that this researcher or the next was on the verge of convincing the government to reveal the secret. Just keep fighting, and keep your newsletter subscriptions in force to fund the movement. It’s getting closer, any time now we’ll know the truth about our alien visitors.

Segue to today’s disclosure movement. We are told to rest assured that our governments know the truth, that we are being visited by advanced beings from another star system. The authorities have physical evidence, such as the wreckage of crashed spaceships and maybe even the bodies of aliens being kept in cold storage.

Just listen to the whistleblowers. Buy their books, or attend their paid lectures. Patriotic government officials are on our side. They want you to know the truth, and they are working behind the scenes to move disclosure along. It will happen any time now. Just give it another year or two.

As you might gather, I have followed this tired routine for several decades. From the lobbying efforts of Major Donald Keyhoe’s NICAP to force legislative hearings beginning in the 1950s, to those faux hearings featuring former members of Congress and the Senate a couple of years back, the evidence may be compelling, utterly believable. But the decision makers aren’t listening. They are happy to spend black budget funds to pay for top secret research projects, which come from the taxes you pay, but they aren’t willing to let you in on the flying saucer secret.

We’ve got to make them stop!

Wait a minute! Why not sign a petition? Wouldn’t enough signatures convince the President that we deserve action? All right, maybe that first petition didn’t have enough names. So it was answered by a low-level bureaucrat who merely repeated the tired mantra that there is no evidence that UFOs are extraterrestrial. The next petition will succeed. Just enough names on it, and they will have to listen.

In 2011, several prominent researchers into the Roswell UFO incident came together to form a “Dream Team” that would attempt put together everything known known about the episode and evaluate it as a “cold case.” There came the promise of delivering a final answer, or at the least confessing that the investigation was at an end, that nothing new would come from any further research. Well, unless or until the authorities revealed evidence that contradicted their assertion that it was nothing but a crashed balloon.

Two years later, it appeared the Dream Team was coming apart with the report that one of the key members, Kevin D. Randle, was saying no mas in one of his blog posts. This all came in the wake of a report about some alleged “smoking gun” evidence in the form of two Kodachrome color slides. These slides reportedly depict an alien being lying in a glass case.

So that’s the claim.

Where’s the evidence? Well, it’s not as if you can see the slides and decide for yourselves if they are genuine. The slides may exist, or at least those who have seen them make that assertion. Almost as exciting is the report that the owners include a woman, a Texas lawyer with alleged intelligence connections dating back to World War II. Assuming she is still alive, she’d be quite old.

None of the oh-so-obvious concerns have stopped UFO author Thomas Carey from making promises; most recently, at a UFO panel discussion held at American University in Washington, DC.

In his presentation, Carey claimed the slides were evaluated by Kodak’s official historian, who concluded the pictures had been taken in 1947. They allegedly depict a small, partially dissected being with insectoid head, lying in a case. If genuine, and that’s a big if, it could be evidence that, in 1947, we recovered an alien body and subjected the creature to an autopsy.

Are those slides ironclad evidence that the Roswell crash truly involved the recovery of a spaceship and one or more alien beings? Can anyone prove the pictures even involved Roswell? Is it at all possible the alleged creature is nothing more than an artificial construction made by a movie special effects artist? Do the slides contain enough detail that would allow one to separate the real from the made up?

Evidently not, since they are said to be blurry.

That the slides can be dated does not prove whether the the creature depicted in them is the real article, a visitor from another world. All sorts of claims can be made, of course, and it may well be that Carey is sincerely attempting to determine their authenticity.

In the meantime, I wish he’d just shut up! Yes, Carey claims the actual slides will be revealed next year, when he has permission to do so from the owners. While the infamous “NDA” or non-disclosure agreement excuse has been trotted out, why, then, mention them at all until there’s evidence to back up the claims?

Besides, having gone this far to hype them, what’s the hold up? Why get your hopes up high? Or is there some doubt that they are genuine? Would it not not be better to make digital copies and submit them for analysis by different photo experts so they could make a determination? Maybe a little Photoshop enhancement would help pick out telltale details.

Even if it could somehow be demonstrated we are looking at a real once-living alien, one not surgically or otherwise altered, does that necessarily prove a Roswell connection? Can the causal connection be truly made?

I don’t pretend to have any of the answers beyond the published material. But I will say this: If the promise that those slides will be revealed in 2015 is not fulfilled, what does that say about Carey or other researchers are are impressed by this purported evidence?

Or is this yet another example of UFO vaporware?
