This Week's Episode: Fortean researcher/writer/podcaster Micah Hanks returns to The Paracast to bring us up to date on his work. He covers the legends of the MIB, the work of author John Keel, space exploration and, among other things, current reports about the UAP (UFO) task force formed by the Pentagon. Micah is a longtime advocate for scientific research into UFOs. As a frequent commentator and writer on this subject, he maintains an interest in the history, and possible scientific explanations for aspects of the phenomenon. Along with his science advocacy relating to this topic, Micah’s interests also include areas of consciousness research, biological and zoological mysteries, and other unusual phenomena in nature. A “hopeful skeptic,” he advocates a critically-minded approach to the study of these subjects.

What if the Past 70 Years Never Occurred?

By Gene Steinberg

On August 13th, 2020, while recording the August 16th episode of The Paracast, I got an online notification about an intriguing story from CNN. All right, I understand that one’s choices of news outlets are polarized nowadays, but this is the sort of story that has traversed the left and the right.

It was about UFOs, but not about yet another sighting somewhere. We’ve certainly had plenty of those over the decades.

The article confirmed that “The Pentagon is forming a new task force to investigate UFOs that have been observed by US military aircraft, according to two defense officials.

“Deputy Secretary of Defense David Norquist will help oversee the task force, which is expected to be officially unveiled in the next few days, according to the officials. Previous efforts to look into what the Pentagon dubs unidentified aerial phenomena were led by the US Navy as many of the documented encounters involved their aircraft.”

All right, that was little more than confirmation of something most of you have already heard. It doesn’t vindicate anyone who expects UFO disclosure, an admission by the governments of Earth that we are being visited by extraterrestrials.

But it contains some juicy nuggets nonetheless.

Thus: “Members of Congress and Pentagon officials have long expressed concerns about the appearance of the unidentified aircraft that have flown over US military bases, posing a risk to military jets. There is no consensus on their origin with some believing they may be drones potentially operated by earthly adversaries seeking to gather intelligence rather than extraterrestrials.”

No laughter, no snide asides. Just straight-ahead mainstream journalism reflecting two possibilities. Nothing about little green men or drunken or drug-filled fantasies.

So, "The Senate Intelligence Committee voted in June to have the Pentagon and intelligence community provide a public analysis of the encounters, following the official Pentagon release of three short videos showing US aircraft encountering these phenomena.”

The article also quotes excerpts from a July TV appearance by the Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Republican Senator Marco Rubio, on WFOR-TV.

“Frankly, if it's something from outside this planet, that might actually be better than the fact that we've seen some sort of technological leap on behalf of the Chinese or the Russians or some other adversary.”

Now in normal times, this story and others on the topic might go to the front of the line as to coverage. But these are not normal times, and there are all those other issues that require more immediate attention.

So it basically flew under the radar more or less. It it wasn’t for that notification on my iPhone, I might never have seen it.

At the same time, setting up a task force to study something doesn’t imply immediate gratification. It doesn’t mean that, in the near future — or ever — you will learn of its findings.

If a new President takes office in January, there will undoubtedly be a new Deputy Secretary of Defense and other government bureaucrats. They will surely have different priorities. Indeed, the things the prior administration did will go by the wayside. This is, of course, what happened when the current administration took office.

Same for the U.S. Senate. If Democrats take control, someone else will be named as Chairman of the Intelligence Committee, although Sen. Rubio will continue to be a member.

Remember, too, that being favorably disposed towards investigating UFOs — well UAPs — is essentially non-partisan. In the 2016 election, Secretary Clinton made several public appearances expressing support to investigate the phenomenon. President Trump has also made a few positive comments about the subject since being elected. But what is surprising is the fact that he didn’t attack his opponent back then for her views. After calling her everything bad in the book, I wonder why.

On the other hand, Trump's predecessors have made hopeful comments about UFOs too, but nothing positive is ever accomplished. So one could be cynical and suggest that they are just trolling for votes from UFO believers. They are also promising a chicken in every pot; in other words, it’s more about pandering than actually getting something accomplished.

Now some conspiracy-minded people suggest that, when a President takes office, they are shown the riot act about disclosing the UFO secret, and thus they say no more. Or very little about the subject. When they do comment, it’s non-committal.

So I am not about to suggest that disclosure is happening in our midst, and that some really significant revelations are due. Remember that even with the Tic-Tac sightings, there’s nothing terribly new to report to help us understand what’s going on. It’s the same phenomenon that has been around for decades.

It’s also curious that current efforts to look into the matter, including that Pentagon task force, treat the subject as if nobody in government has ever looked into it. The history of Project Blue Book and other studies of UFOs is gone and forgotten. Or at least ignored.

It’s all about today, or maybe the reporters who write these stories want to avoid the negative stench of previous UFO coverage, or aren’t doing their homework. Certainly 30 seconds on Google would reveal a wealth of material to consult.

So you’d think there ought to be a paragraph referencing this material. After all, it’s not about word count for digital content.

Certainly those devoted civilian UFO researchers, who have been studying the mystery all these years, are basically being overlooked. You certainly don’t hear anything about MUFON, though the personnel problems that have rocked the organization may make it difficult to take anything they are doing very seriously.

Bedsides, what did MUFON contribute towards getting a new UFO study? I don’t even hear crickets.

All right, so maybe I’m pessimistic about all this. The CNN story and similar coverage may merit few, if any, follow-ups, and we’ll all move on.

Then again, maybe we’ll wake up one day and discover that disclosure has already occurred. But we didn’t notice.
