Welcome to the Era of Disbelief A common theory in the UFO field is that the U.S. government knows exactly what’s going on in our skies, and may even be in league with ET, but they are keeping the facts a secret to protect us. Or to serve their nefarious agenda if you believe in black projects, world governments and other all-too-common conspiracy theories about the way things really are. At the same time, most of the population of this country believes the government can’t do anything right. Whether it’s helping to stop an oil spill to getting the economy back into decent shape, those damned politicians and bureaucrats ought to stop messing with things they just can’t handle. Consider a recent situation involving one of my nephews, who is severely handicapped. His parents tried to set him up for disability income with the Social Security Administration, only to confront months of delays and incompetence before their son was awarded a pittance in terms of benefits. As you know, some of those who advocate for UFO disclosure want us to believe that the very same government that can’t figure out how to handle perfectly ordinary services competently has somehow managed to keep the truth about the alien presence on our planet above top secret for many decades. This is the sort of disconnect that is understandably difficult to accept. Certainly governments in other countries appear no more capable of handling routine affairs. My son lives and works in Spain, and his encounters with the authorities there have also entailed the usual bureaucratic irritants. Now in early days of the modern UFO field, it is perfectly true that most Americans trusted the government to get things right. We also had little pink houses with picket fences, safe neighborhoods, and a family could survive on a single income without maxing out credit cards or taking out home equity loans. The cop on the beat could be depended on protect your children, you didn’t need burglar alarms and several dead bolt locks on your front doors and windows. Everything was right in the world. That was before 24/7 cable news forever skewed our image of what’s really going on, and a politician can’t even belch in a restaurant before it makes the headlines. So we return to the core question: How can anyone possibly believe that the solution to the flying saucer mystery remains in the hands of Earthly governments when they keep screwing up? Wouldn’t those secrets leak like sieves all over the place? More to the point, how do they efficiently pass on such critical information as military officers and civilian authorities leave or retire from their jobs? Is there some sort of clandestine orientation session that involves newly-seasoned officials, not to mention presidents, prime ministers and so on and so forth? This efficient transfer of secrets seems to fly in the face of a creaking, inefficient government structure, so you wonder whether the image of the UFO “Silence Group,” first expressed by the late Major Donald E. Keyhoe back in the 1950s, bears any resemblance to reality. Yet it’s also true that there have been press reports in recent years about some major entertainment figures having served in intelligence gathering capacities during World War II. Well, they kept that information a secret, even though the tasks to which they were assigned were far less critical than covering up the alleged truth about alien visitations to our planet. So I’ll never say never. I only wish the government with which we interact would pick up a few tips on efficiency from the one we evidently never see.
